Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

Surely there must be more to the Lavinia story - bit of a damp squib that one (trying a bit hard too re newspaper leaks etc.)

I've come to the conclusion it's not an army hospital - it is a personality transplant hospital. Edith becoming 'a bit of a brick', O'Brien becoming compassionate, Matthew's mum getting overly bossy and worst of all - Lord G becoming bullish and pissed off at having them in his house. you would have thought he would have been glad to do something more for the war effort than swanning round in a uniform that doesn't mean anything....

Saltire · 03/10/2011 08:21

I missed the bit about Thomas being in charge......in charge of what, the staff, or the hospital staff, or the whole household?

ThePsychicSatsuma · 03/10/2011 09:21

in charge of 'managing' the hospital operations, therefore 'over' the household staff including mr carson, a position which would give him muchos influence

ThePsychicSatsuma · 03/10/2011 09:22

nb.
obrien is NOT becoming compassionate
y'all are being fooled

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 10:00

Okay...mistake for Mary to have sent Sir Richard's people round to Bates and Vera's....this is how he finds out about her and Pamuk, I'm sure. Whoever sniffed out Bates is going to do the same for this story.

I feel like there's more to the Lavinia story too though. But whether there is or whether Sir R/people around him will make it seem like it is for some reason...another story.

Matthew's missing in action...and it's only episode four out of eight???? Hmmmm....J Fellows would be crazy not to bring him back...how to "kill off" viewer numbers by 30%+ in one fell swoop.

So totally knew that Mrs Crawley was going to be insufferable in this series.

Good on Edith, found myself up off my seat cheering for her. [saddo emoticon]

ThePsychicSatsuma · 03/10/2011 10:03

yes, the dead turk will haunt mary
will Lavinia step in to save her chops seeing as mary didnt blast her out of the water??
aunt rosemary and her dead lizard eyes were a bit aggrieved at the lack of blood spilt werent they! does this mean mary has decided she doesnt really like matthew after all??

ShowOfHands · 03/10/2011 10:17

Henry Lang was good last night wasn't he?

ShowOfHands · 03/10/2011 10:18

Liked Mrs Patmore too. Along with the blind chap last week who slit his wrists, they're actually making some sort of dramatic nod to the realities of war. The hospital scenes aren't really capturing it atm.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 03/10/2011 10:29

agree. the convalescing officers seem very unbloody and flirty

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 10:46

This last episode is not getting v good reviews, apart frmt he Guardian. Personally - I thought it was the best one of this series....finally getting a chance to see where some of these stories/characters are going...If they'd introduced yet another set of characters and totally new story lines I would have felt inclined to give up on it....

GeorginaWorsley · 03/10/2011 10:51

Matthew will come back,am sure.
Still say 'flu will see someone off at the end of the war.
Yes,perhaps Lavinia will 'owe' Mary a favour now.

ppeatfruit · 03/10/2011 11:42

Oh lol at Maggie Smith's "there'll be amputations on the dining room table" she's fab. (i had to catch up yesterday afternoon 'cos i was away last weekend).

Does anyone else who listens to the Archers think the youngest posh nurse daughter Lydia is the actress who plays Alice also youngest posh daughter of Brian, she sounds like she has a 20 a day fag habit to me.

Surprised at O'Brien being sympathetic to Lang; cue for unpleasantness and jealousy from Thomas d'ye reckon? Also why wouldn't Lord G. tell wifey about Thomas's dishonesty?

Misspixietrix · 03/10/2011 12:00

My money is on Lord G for the flu.

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 13:12

I still think Sybil could sneak in there and snare Matthew. Because M will have married Sir Richard.

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 13:13

Can they really have Matthew rattling around as a solicitor for another series? I think they will give him the keys to the kingdom at the end of this one.

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 13:17

Plus plus plus, there going to need Sir Richard's money to keep the estate afloat when Matthew looses the lot in the 1929 crash....

diddl · 03/10/2011 13:37

Maybe Lord G dies in this one?

Series three Matthew is married to whoever & their son dies in WW2 & that´s the end of Downton?

Haven´t seen it all yet, but the power struggle between Cora & Isobel.

Feel a bit sorry for Isobel as she is the mother of the heir.

Wonder what provision there is for Coar & the girls if Lord G dies first?

Maybe she´d be better off with Isobel on side!

MortBlackCatsandWitch · 03/10/2011 13:43

I think William will come back badly injured and Daisy will have to marry / look after him when she never loved him in the first place.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 03/10/2011 14:52

why didnt they tell cora about thomas's thieving?

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 14:53

Isobel's awful in parts in this one. Very sanctimonious about what others should be doing and a bit too open about wanting a slap on the back for her efforts to get them to do it. Honestly, just get on with it (Like Saintly Sybil - can she do no wrong?!).

harrietthespook · 03/10/2011 14:54

Psychic
I think Carson is actually making reference to Pamuk - although Lord G wouldn't get it. he knows about Thomas' role.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 03/10/2011 14:55

found it a bit annoying matthew just touring england with the general.
he needs to lose an eye or something very brave and tragic, or give his life for william's ... thomas needs sending back.

whats with branston getting himself in such a pickle too! he's a fascist isnt he?
