Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

I tried to watch it last night but was getting so irritated!! All those cosy little chats with the staff.....all those kind words of advice???? really??? staff had to turn and face the wall if a member of the family came through to the room they were in.....staff would have to follow the family around cleaning their bedrooms after they left, cleaning the breakfast room after they had eaten etc.......had to turn it off. Very dissappointed :(

mrszimmerman · 26/09/2011 11:15

Oh I didn't think Edith had made the beast with two backs with dirty farmer did she?
I thought she just snogged him?

Summerbird73 · 26/09/2011 11:16

mrszimmerman you sound just like my DH; professing something to be a pile of shite yet knowing all the characters and plot lines Hmm

there is an anti-downton thread in Telly Addicts. Just saying.

mrszimmerman · 26/09/2011 11:17

oh lawks! No offence! I love it! But it's still trashy isn't it?

missmogwi · 26/09/2011 11:20

Grin I knew someone would get in before me defending the Abbey!

OP posts:
mrszimmerman · 26/09/2011 11:22

why defend it? I LOVE it!
But it is really lowbrow codaristotosh.
You can't possibly defend its script or characterisations or it's terrible axe grinding about issues of cowardice and heroism?
It's just glorious looking, addictive nonsense, great frocks but it's not great drama is it?

Summerbird73 · 26/09/2011 11:32

ah mrszimmerman i get it - this is your dirty little secret Wink see we are a brazen lot Grin

AKMD · 26/09/2011 11:32

I thought the uniforms made everyone look like they'd put on a pound or two, even the lovely William.

Edith and the farmer? Uh, no. She is like a different character is this episode, what happened there?!

[wishes Mary had just married Matthew at the end of series 1 and it had ended there :(]

harrietthespook · 26/09/2011 11:32

It's a weak series so far.

On a serious point - what's that they say, about writing about what you know?

Clearly Fellows and his helpers have strayed into an area, i.e. the war, they clearly have no clue how to portray.

Too many characters, too many subplots, 'saying things' rather than 'showing things' i.e. Sybil: I'm Miss Crawley now. And to Branson (what the fuck was he doing in the hospital anyway at that particular point) "I could never go back to my former life." She's been in the hospital all of two bloody minutes. WTF?

Thomas about to come out to that patient.

Lady Mary in Carson's room getting love advice?

Seriously - have they completely changed writers for this script? I will still watch it but it's not the same.

missmogwi · 26/09/2011 11:35

It was a lighthearted comment hence the Grin as we all love it on here.

I agree it's not the greatest drama ever written but it's beautiful, addictive escapism which fills a gap. It's great!

diddl · 26/09/2011 12:13

It was all so disjointed, wasn´t it?

Were they really so friendly with staff?

I wonder what it is about Lavinia?

Bad enough for them to split so that Matthew goes for Mary?

Mary still pisses me off though-but Edith seems a bit more human, now.

Jacksterbear · 26/09/2011 12:20

But wtf was Edith thinking snogging that farmer?!

Jacksterbear · 26/09/2011 12:22

And does anyone else keep thinking of Blackadder Goes Forth in all the trench scenes? Can't take them seriously as I keep expecting General Melchett to turn up at any moment...

diddl · 26/09/2011 12:24

What I forgot to say about last week was when Mary turned up at the station-how did she know that Lavinia wouldn´t be there or that Matthew would want her there?

Was pleased that Lavinia stood up to her & that Matthew told her to move on.

And Lady Violet getting her comeuppance!

"The times they are a changing"!

diddl · 26/09/2011 12:29

Oh yes-Edith, that was disappointing.

Wonder why she couldn´t have just been nice?

scarlettlips · 26/09/2011 12:32

I enjoyed last night but...nothing really happen! I mean ITV show all the best bits in the sodding trailers Sad

I mean what the heck has happen to Mary, girl find your balls and and push Lavinia (clearly I have a secret) out of the way!! She was punchy before and now just a bit wet. I think Mary will marry or at least try to marry that new chap (what's his name again) but at the last min shit will hit the fan.

Lavinia - Hope they aren't going to drag this story line out, she's trouble. I beat Lord G's sister (Sam Bond) will find it all out.

I want more bitching god -dammit...! [stomp]

diddl Sybil and Matthew..I think this would be a great story line! Mary will die and Sybil and Matthew will be pushed together by grief! Not before Mary tells Matthew she loves him.

Poor Edith, I wonder if that other chap the older guy will return? Or maybe she'll meet a young soldier at Downtown.

William will be killed and then Daisy will be heartbroken.

scarlettlips · 26/09/2011 12:33

Cora standing her ground with Violet...brilliant!!!

LeBOF · 26/09/2011 12:36

I think we should keep ourselves going with while we wait for next week Grin

littlegreenalien · 26/09/2011 12:38

Edith certainly does seem to have developed a bit of a pash on farming doesn't she ?

Perhaps she secretly still pines for old Sir Antony Strallon to whom she expressed a desire to see his mechanised farm equipment or some such fascination. I seem to remember he took her out and about in his car and was going to propose but Mary was horribly mean and deliberately put him off with a pack of lies about Edith.

Interesting to see if she'll drop the farming fetish and go back to "driving" Branson mad with her motor car skills.

I'm pleased to see they are developing her character more, after all dark horses and all that.

diddl · 26/09/2011 12:38

"Poor Edith, I wonder if that other chap the older guy will return? "

I doubt it, but I liked him.

That´s what pisses me off about the Mary/Edith thing-Mary lied to him.

scarlettlips · 26/09/2011 12:43

Brilliant!!

scarlettlips · 26/09/2011 12:47

Poor Edith, by that I mean she's just so well blaaaaaaa! I think Mary and Edith might bond after something...maybe Edith will get knocked up and Mary will help her?

I think Anna and Mrs Bates will have a huge row, and Anna will end up killing Mrs Bates by pushing her down the stairs of something.

God I'm bored today...Grin

I think Daisy will tell William she doesn't want to be his 'sweetheart', then he will go and get killed and she will think it's all her fault.

Edith must die. No idea how (rampaging farmer's wife? Car crash? Spanish flu?) but she is too annoying to live, especially now she has turned nice for reasons inexplicable. I don't really understand why she went to the farm anyway - what happened to the girl who was more worried about having gravy on her dress than the butler dying on the dining room floor? Breeches fetish much.

Mary will profess her undying love for Matthew, Lavinia will overhear her and it will be handbags at dawn. Lavinia is obviously a bad'un but will sell Mary's story in return for the newspaper guy's silence about her own soiled past.

Agreed Mary needs her feistiness back. 'I will accept him' - why? Just coz Cousin Matthew told her he wanted her to move on, even though he is clearly still in love with her and has his suspicions about her anyway? He needsto grow a pair as well - making Mary marry a ragamuffin might well give him the best excuse for marrying Lavinia but it isn't exacrly gentlemanly is it.
