oes anyone on here get really stupidly obsessive about a television programme or film?

I get disks from "Lovefilm", and I usually watch them once, maybe watch a bit of the commentary or extras, then send it back to get the next one.

But I got the first episode of "Hornblower" starring Ioan Gruffudd and it's utterly obsessed me! Last couple of days, I have watched it morning noon and night. I could probably give a blow by blow account of every scene and have memorised some of the dialogue. Can't say I understand all the Naval jargon but that's the next thing on the list to do, that and read the entire works of C S Forester who wrote those books. And I want to go back to Dundee where there's a ship from that era and you can wander round it. I want to do that and half shut my eyes and pretend I'm on the ship in the film.

Today I had to get the children to stage an intervention and MAKE me seal up the "Lovefilm" envelope. But a weasly part of my mind is thinking... I have spare envelopes... I could rip it open just one last time.

Does anyone else get like this?

Slightly different but I can't let go of shows that are crappy.

I currently have 3 episodes of Falling Skies to watch. It's rubbish but I'm worried it might get better and I'll miss it.

Same with Mildred Pierce, Lost, Prison Break.

The absolute worst one was The Pacific. I watched every single dreary episode of that and missed the fact that one of the main characters was killed at Iwo Jima because it was murky and he was wearing a helmet (not that effective against a bullet) and he looked just like everyone else.

CheerfulYank · 30/08/2011 17:08

Sigh...Prison Break. I loved the first season, the second was ok and the third and fourth were CRAP. It made me sad.

limitedperiodonly · 30/08/2011 17:09

I am proud that I managed to ditch FX's The Defenders and that thing with Jason Swartzman and Ted Danson about the would-be author turned private eye. Some things are too terrible even for me.

WakeUpRosemary · 30/08/2011 21:09

limitedperiodonly: that was Bored to Death. the first episode was the most misogynist piece of crap I've ever seen.

I think Breaking Bad is the best TV show ever made. It's about a high-school chemistry teacher who gets lung cancer and decides to cook meth to leave money to his family. I have to watch it illegally because it's not shown on any channel here (maybe FX but I don't have that and it wouldn't be up-to-date). I listen to the associated podcast and read another well-known TV site's discussion forums about it after I've watched each episode. It never fails to surprise me and shock me and move me. I think about it far more than is normal. It is amazing.

I even got my 76 year old mother into it and she's usually into Midsomer Murders and Casualty. She's always asking if I have a new episode and when can she see it. She's like a junkie. Everyone I know who watches it is enthralled. You can buy the first season for a pittance. It's criminal that it's not more popular (although the actors regularly win Emmys).

Also loved Buffy but it wasn't a patch on BB. After this season (the fourth) there'll be 16 more episodes and then it will be over forever and I don't know what I'll do.

CheerfulYank · 30/08/2011 21:18

I've heard Breaking Bad is fantastic Rosemary . I'll have to check it out.

Had a good rummage round Cash Converters for State of Play today but no joy. Will try the library next but failing that, i"ll smile sweetly at my bro and get him to use his paypal account to get it off amazon for me and give him the cash. I simply HAVE to see it.

greencolorpack · 31/08/2011 00:24

I completely take ER seriously, like i totally believe the characters are real and i care about them. How pathetic is that!!!!!!!!!

Hush hush now Chipstick, it's not pathetic. You won't meet judgement on this thread, everyone is in the same boat. With Hornblower!! Oh no I've gone off on one.

Re not being able to see things legally, I am now aware thanks to the internet that Ioan Gruffudd is in a television thriller and it looks awesome. And I have to hope and pray it comes to British screens. Sometimes I'd rather not know about television shows that are outside my grasp. Like, season four of "The Office" I love that show and am dying to know what happens next.

I'm a huge dance fan. I took classes until my mid twenties, and both my DDs dance.

I'll watch anything dance. I have ABDC, Born to Dance, Dance Scene all on sky+ at the moment. And will add Strictly and DWTS when they come back at end Sept. And Got to Dance whenever that is back.

But my obsession is SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance)

My friend got me into it during S3 in US (5 years ago). I've downloaded all US seasons, and also followed both UK seasons, and 2 Canada and 2 Australia seasons. During US season I'm fairly active on the boards. I was away on hols during US S8 final this summer, and HAD to watch 3 hours of final & results as soon as I got home, before I unpacked my suitcases. (But at least I fed the children first!). I could easily name at least 8 of every top 10 from US season (except maybe S1). I follow several of my favs on twitter, and maintain an interest in their dance careers.

Obsessed is the right word for me, I think!

JosieRosie · 31/08/2011 13:47

The Thick of It. Utterly obsessed. Can quote whole chunks of dialogue - and frequently do! Drives DP crazy because he doesn't feel it bears repeated viewing. He's so wrong Smile

BalloonSlayer · 31/08/2011 13:50

so . . . um . . . what would you guys say to someone who (with her DH) intended to watch the West Wing when it started however many years ago, because they liked the sound of it, but missed the first few episodes and thought they'd missed the boat, who thus has never seen a single episode and they often feel like they have nothing to watch of an evening. . .

recommend?

CJCregg · 31/08/2011 13:50

Totally agree about West Wing (hence my nn) and State of Play. Also Mad Men and am currently finding Dexter quite addictive.

I got The Killing from LoveFilm and sat waiting for the postman to deliver the next disc. Utterly obsessed, Sarah Lund is my new heroine.

Also, weirdly, an 80s series called Wish Me Luck, about female British spies who helped the French Resistance in WW2. I got the box set from Amazon last year and watched it non-stop. Got nothing else done for a week Grin

CJCregg · 31/08/2011 13:51

Just do it, BalloonSlayer. It is utterly brilliant.

AngryGnome · 31/08/2011 13:54

I have huge obsessions with TV series. Watched Buffy obsessively in my twenties (even went to the extent of writing a conference paper on Buffy and getting it published - God knows how i managed to get it past my research supervisor! Blush).

Through my pregnancy it was Hornblower pretty much every day - cannot believe there were so few episodes! Ioan was a major crush from months 3-8! So exciting I am using far too many exclamation marks!

When I could drag myself away from Hornblower, I was very into Footballers' Wives (yes, I am operating on about a 10 year time-lag).

Now DH and I are watching the Sopranos on Sky Atlantic (told you we operated on a timelag) and I am changing my affections from wanting to be a stowaway on the Indy, to wanting to be a mafioso in New Jersey.

I am VERY easily influenced.....

AngryGnome · 31/08/2011 13:56

Has anyone seen the Wire? I understand it is the best thing since sliced bread? I expect to be watching it in about 10 years, given our current time-lag situation.

btw, anyone watching the re-runs of ER that are on at the moment? Had forgotten quite how much I was in love with Benton and Kovac. Swoon....

teddymummy · 31/08/2011 13:56

DH and I are avid West Wingers too. We actually have discussions about how we can make it last... feel really naughty watching two in an evening! It's brilliant

BalloonSlayer · 31/08/2011 14:07

Blimey teddymummy you make it sound like bumsex or something.

not that I am complaining.

foxinsocks · 31/08/2011 14:14

I first got obsessed with the original CSI. For about 6 months, it was all I ever wanted to watch. Bought the box sets etc. Could quote Grissom's lines. And then it disappeared and I haven't seen an episode since!

Then I moved onto House for about 6 months. Even dh started noticing that he was more likely to get nookie if I had just watched an episode Blush.

I haven't had anything for a few years now and there is definitely something lacking in my life Grin

Gemjar · 31/08/2011 14:15

carer if it's John Simm you're after, try a couple of his oldies - The Lakes was amazing and what first got me into him, it was a TV series in the 90's where he plays a scouser who moves away to the Lake District. Also worth a try is a film called Boston Kickout, it has him and Andrew Lincoln in it and they play young lads who have just left school but don't know what to do with their lives.

My current obsessive is definitely Trueblood, I am watching season 4 at the moment and it is already becoming the best series so far. Since watching it I have started to look out for other things starring the leads, or maybe just to perve over Alexander Skarsgaard. Grin

karlmarxthespot · 31/08/2011 14:18

I was unhealthily obsessed with The Mighty Boosh. I'm over it now though.

greencolorpack · 31/08/2011 14:20

I loved True Blood but then lost track of it after the second series. If it comes on again at a night and time I can see it I will.

I agree with Balloonslayer, watching a couple of shows the same evening is quite a few notches down from naughty on my moral barometer. I'd say it's in the benign category.

LordOfTheFlies · 31/08/2011 15:24

greencolourpack I spent a whole evening/night watching State of Play a couple of years back. It was one of those between Christmas and New Year evenings when there's nothing to watch!

I didn't see it when it originally aired and it was billed as a tense political thriller so I thought it would be like Between the Lines.

I was left a bit meh by it. It had loads of potential ( David M P.A. threw herself/was pushed in front of a train IIRC).

Just thought it limped home TBH.

LordOfTheFlies · 31/08/2011 15:25

David Morriseys characters' P.A. - that was as clear as mud Grin

BalloonSlayer · 31/08/2011 15:47

Oh I just wondered if "West Wingers" was rhyming slang for something a bit fruitier.

I can feel a thread coming on: "AIBU to suggest to DH that we become West Wingers due to Mumsnet recommendation."

CJCregg · 31/08/2011 15:50

The approved term is 'Wingnuts', BalloonSlayer Grin

Oh, please - just do it. I have watched Series 1 so often that the disc is now fucked, otherwise I'd go back to the beginning right now.

carernotasaint · 31/08/2011 15:59

Gemjar,Thankyou for that. I think i vaguely remember catching one episode of the Lakes many years ago when it was on,i seem to vaguely remember a girl being raped in a bar? (Sunday nights in the nineties were spent at my best mates house who was a struggling single mum back then) Boston Kickout sounds good and Andrew Lincoln i remember from This Life which is the programme i was obsessed with in the "90s.
C.J.Cregg Just to let you know that Sofie Graoebel. (Dont think ive spelt her name right sorry) who plays Sarah Lund is on the front cover of the October issue of Psychologies which is out today, which also means there will be an interview with her inside the mag.
