Old thread's getting full, so here's a nice new acid-resistant one...

OP posts:
Snapespeare · 30/09/2011 11:26

Oh Rory! Sad

i think the nurses badge is important. The BBC just doesn't make huge gaffes like that. Hmm

I am agreeing with 'daddy-agenda' now. I feel marginalised!

AitchTwoOh · 30/09/2011 11:27

what was the props thing in series 5?

wasn't there a 'good man' moment between river and rory?

AitchTwoOh · 30/09/2011 11:31

ah gottit, the 1990 thing.

Snapespeare · 30/09/2011 11:45

I think Arthur Darvill has been excellent this series - my favourite Rory moment being when Mels set up Amy & Rory. His face of absolute devastation and turning and running away was so beautiful and poignant. Little touches like that have made this series for me - such brilliant performances (even from Amy, especially when she was old - it was so far away from 'pout/tosses hair/runs'.) and of course from Matt Smith - there is so much going on behind his eyes. :)

scaevola · 30/09/2011 12:22

Would someone please explain the props/1990 thing? Thanks.

I had assumed that Rory was immune from the gangers because he was still part plastic (Nestene Consciousness) - didn't he say something to the Doctor this series about it still being part of his brain, but a part he could keep locked up?

WhereYouLeftIt · 30/09/2011 12:34

Sorry the 'nurse's badge' / 1990 - it's got right over my head, what's that about?

Snapespeare · 30/09/2011 13:08

gah. if Rory is part plastic, does that make River Song part plastic? (nnot saying Alex Kingston has had any 'work' done...)

In the first episode of S5, in Ledworth, theres a kind of matrixey stop time animation sequence that zooms in on Rorys badge - which says issued (some date in ) 1990. that would make it 20 years old. Is Rory around 20 - 25-ish? so his name badge was issued at birth/five years old.

there's something fishy about Rory.

teejwood · 30/09/2011 13:09

whereyouleftit when we first meet rory he is wearing his nurse's ID badge and it is dated 1990. yet the action is supposed to be taking place in the present-ish day and he is supposed to have grown up with amy, so should be roughly a similar age to her - and so cannot have been a nurse in 1990.

it has been said that it was just an error in the props department, but some people still suspect it means something.

certainly there is an argument that time in leadworth was messed up even before what we see in Amy's Choice - and yes this can probably be explained away by the crack in time messing everything up but it could point to a longer term arc.

eg - also in eleventh hour, the doctor flies over london which has the London Eye in place, which was only constructed for the millennium. this means that the next explosion must take the tardis back in time for him to crash land at Amelia's house when she is a child...

or else the tardis has landed in a leadworth where time is not what it seems. and that may mean rory and amy are not what they seem, either.

the timeline with melody/mels' regeneration does not add up, either. she regenerated in 1969 and yet still grew up as a peer of rory and amy? again, she probably time-travelled somehow to end up on the right timeline, but how? or again does this point to time still not being quite right among our happy little family?

teejwood · 30/09/2011 13:11

x-post with snapeseare but she was more succinct!

teejwood · 30/09/2011 13:27

ohhhhhh - the bbc has added some more promo pics to the official website - the last few are very interesting indeed....
"you may now kiss the bride"??

CaptainNancy · 30/09/2011 13:32

Yes- I was very confused at how Mel could seemingly regenerate as a child, yet grow up alongside Amy and Rory Hmm

AlmaMartyr · 30/09/2011 13:32

I've been lurking on this thread and thought I really should join it. Interesting new preview pics! I love some of the theories on here, hope we get a decent conclusion on Saturday night.

TashHag · 30/09/2011 16:27

We don't actually know that Melody regenerated into Mels in 1969 - there could have been another one in between....

HarrietJones · 30/09/2011 17:03

Did it say NYC was 1969? Or just NYC? If she escaped from
The suit she may have time travelled too?

teejwood · 30/09/2011 20:19

Tash - agreed that could be a scarlet herring, too. If the girl is Melody and if it was her we saw regenerating that was supposed to be New York, six months later (after the events of DOTM) and she is dressed in old-fashioned clothes.

Mels said something along the lines of it's OK, I've done this before - last time was in New York.

So we would put 2 and 2 together and figure out that was Melody turning into Mels - but then, we know that Moffatt lies and all might not be as it seems!

teejwood · 30/09/2011 20:21

In truth, we don't even know if the Mels memories were planted in her own, Amy 's and Rory's minds to give her a past that never existed. Or if she was there all along who on earth brought her up? Has Madame Kovarian (heavily disguised) actually been living in Leadworth all this time?! Shock

Snapespeare · 01/10/2011 07:01

its today!!!!!

and we're off to olympia to geek-out!

EdithWeston · 01/10/2011 07:36

Snakespeare - have a lovely time. We went during the summer holidays and it was brilliant.

(Tip: do not go too fast through the forest with the weeping angels - DD was ploughing ahead to the next bit, and missed them all. No darling, I'm not taking you again).

Snapespeare · 01/10/2011 08:04

ahh no! we went a few months ago and missed an entire room! too excited! :)

were going to this am determined to corner alex kingston and demand she tells me everything! Wink and hug arthur darvill. and kidnap david tennant (joke! joke!)

Snapespeare · 01/10/2011 08:08

:( just read Alex Kingston has cancelled and glorious mr tennant is only there tomorrow. slightly tempted to change attendance gto tomorrow - as Paul McGann there as well. hmmm. shall consult DCs...

EdithWeston · 01/10/2011 08:11

Looks good!

(I'd assumed you meant Olympia 2 and the Experience!)

I'm a bit miffed that tonight's Doctor Who Confidential will clash with Merlin!

OneWaySystemBlues · 01/10/2011 08:19

I'm confused. Is Rory part plastic? I thought he wasn't. He was the Roman centurion who looked after Amy for 200 years when she was in the Pandorica, but then didn't the Doctor reset the universe, making everything that had happened not have happened. Which is when we go back to Amy and Rory's wedding and she has to remember the Doctor in order to make him exist again. So Rory is back to normal, but because being near the Doctor and the Tardis when the universe was reset, he still has some memories of what it was like to be plastic and looking after Amy, but he isn't actually plastic. V confusing.

Snapespeare · 01/10/2011 10:24

speculating wildly that river song was madame kovarian. not quite sure how this can be, but sure stephen moffat has a reasonable explanation.

EdithWeston · 01/10/2011 10:32

Snapes - meditrina was talking about that as a possibility higher up the thread.

It might be possible - again it might be part of the reason that River couldn't join the battle of Demons Run (too many versions of herself about) and why Mme Kovarian had to have someone else put baby Melody into such a huge capsule (mustn't interfere with herself).

It's possible that we need a version of River, who becomes Mme Kovarian, to be destroyed. Perhaps Rory will be the one who has to do it (as he had to destroy a version of Amy - training?). And, depending on exactly what role Mme Kavorian has in the Silents (as a religious order) perhaps destroying her will also eliminate the threat from them. After all, Earth had been peacefully co-existing with them for an unspecified ages - what made them become a threat? Perhaps the species we've only seen as Silents is some peace-loving ood cousin, who have been manipulated.

Of course, that still leaves the huge question of what provoked Mme Kevorian's implacable hostility to the Doctor.

Snapespeare · 01/10/2011 10:52

hmmmm! the little girl in NY had regened before...she doesn't necessarily regen into mels. so! baby melody>?>little girl in NY > ?? > mels > river = 'death' in the library, knowing she had no further generations left anyway. any of those '?' regenerations could be multiple, so plenty of room for River to be Madame K.

as to why she hates the doctor? he didn't find her as baby melody. he 'let' her become madame K.

my head hurts. I love you stephen moffat!
