Yay Smile

I loved series 1

OP posts:
pointydog · 09/09/2011 17:43

Mary's such a wet blanket. But they both seem to know what they're talking about so I thole them.

Jason's good. His lebkuchen were bizarre. He's not brilliant.

TwoIfBySea · 09/09/2011 22:09

I didn't mean brilliant at baking, he is very good though, I meant brilliant in attitude! :o

peachsmuggler · 09/09/2011 22:59

He is very laid back in his approach, but he must have real flair for it I think, as has done really well with technical challenges doing recipes he has never tried before, whereas Holly, seems so neurotic with her obsessive weighing of things!!

It is quite funny the way they edit it so they have obviously decided Rob is Mr F*ckup and make a big deal of his errors, while Jason putting salt instead of sugar into his tiny buns was pretty much glossed over.

Yes Paul is super serious, especially when Rob's pastries were a disaster and Salty was all like "How dare he present those to me!!!" However I think it works with him and Mary being quite stern while Mel and Sue generally piss about having fun and are lovely to all the contestants.

mrszimmerman · 10/09/2011 15:42

Pies this week...

What might the technical challenge be?

WhatsWrongWithYou · 10/09/2011 17:42

My money's on a raised game number.

One thing I've noticed which seems to be getting worse as the series goes on, is Miserable Scouser chucking the offerings back on the plate in disgust, after he's made his disdainful 'not good enough' comment. Beyond rude!

GiganticusBottomus · 10/09/2011 18:00

Whatswrongwithyou- I couldn't agree more, it makes him look like a world class arse. I HATE it too.
Salty dog, if you have taken time off from gelling your hair to read this stop throwing food.

I don't cook pies at all (apart from mince pies...mmm....) so I'm really looking forward to this week.

LetUsPrey · 10/09/2011 18:13

Just popped in to say I agree with the comments re the way Paul throws the food back on the plate as if he's been massively insulted by the person baking it. I thought it was soooo rude and really wound me up the other night.

Perhaps someone could make a custard pie and shove it in his face?

pointydog · 10/09/2011 18:34

He was like a big kid when he said it was his job to eat those dense salty rolls, then he gagged and spat it out. Mary didn't flinch.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/09/2011 19:34

Oh yes,a raised pie -I agree- the challenge of the jelly...

peachsmuggler · 10/09/2011 20:31

Did they do the Cornish Pasties last year on pie week or pastry week?

Make steak and kidney with rough puff pastry?

Wonder why they decided to stay in one place rather than tour the country. Maybe the Salty Dog pulled a diva fit!! Grin

OvO · 10/09/2011 20:45

I just googled Mary Berry because I wanted to see what recipe books she had and googled Mary Bell by mistake.

I was Shock at what google listed! That sweet little old lady? Noooo.

Took a while to realise my mistake. Blush

MissRead · 10/09/2011 21:32

DD and I have been glued to this series and we both said the other night that it was really rude the way PH chucked the brandy snaps about. I'm not keen on either of the judges really, PH is so in love with himself and with his temper tantrums is like a poor man's Gordon Ramsey. Mary Berry is a scary old bag although I admit she knows her stuff and is in a position to judge - I'd never heard of PH before. Loving the show in general though, think Holly has a good chance of winning, she is so damn calm.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 10/09/2011 21:54

I saw a raised game pie being made at an Aga demo once ; let's just say I was not moved to make one myself.

I seem to recall boiling water had to be used in the pastry, to make the gluten relax or something, and then it was moulded around a jam jar. And, yes, complicated things were done with the jelly .

Would be interesting to see next week's victims competitors have a bash.

Or maybe they'll go with another fancy French option - milles feuille maybe.

mrszimmerman · 10/09/2011 23:37

oh YES! One of those pies which you make with boiling water!

That's a great suggestion!

My mil's mate used to make a pork pie with that kind of water pastry, what's it called again?
You're really put me off PH actually! You're all absolutely right, it's VERY rude of him to chuck it, but I bet the he's been pushed to be theatrical though; telly people are terrible whoremongering, inauthentic, people-prodding, monstrous, amoral, godforsaken, evil Fakers (I should know as a former one myself Grin) But still, it is rude and one should not be RUDE around baking.

The spitting out was utterly unnecessary too I agree.

I'm nearly off put now!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 11/09/2011 00:22

D'you know, I think it's called - hot water pastry!

MaryAnnSingleton · 11/09/2011 09:33

pork pies are always a tiny bit disgusting aren't they, but nice too

VikingBlood · 11/09/2011 16:25

I love baking and cooking, I consider myself to be a fairly competent home cook, but I'll be buggered if I have ever managed to successfully make macaroons, now I know that the French were wrong and will try the Italian recipe instead. Having said that DH and DC love my shitscuits as my failed chocolate macaroons have aptly been renames due to their uncanny resemblance to small dog poos.

jetmonkey · 11/09/2011 16:35

MAS gosh that sums up pork pies exactly - I never realised but its true
Grin

Bunbaker · 11/09/2011 16:48

I think Paul isn't impartial enough. Although I understand how difficult it must be if you don't like specific flavours. He obviously isn't a fan of strong flavours. For example I would find it hard to give a perfectly made parsnip soup a high mark because I loathe parsnips.

I love Jason's laid back attitude and his smile that lights up his face. He looks like a child on Christmas morning

MaryAnnSingleton · 11/09/2011 19:51

Grin @ shitscuits !

vigglewiggle · 11/09/2011 19:55

I also spat out my tea when reading of the "shitscuits"!

GiganticusBottomus · 11/09/2011 19:58

Bet shitscuits are lush. My friend has a good line in cowpats too.

VikingBlood · 11/09/2011 20:09

We went into a posh cake shop recently and DS aged 9, pointed at some macaroons and said loudly, look mum, they've got shitscuits Biscuit .

vigglewiggle · 11/09/2011 20:25

That must mean yours bear some resemblance to actual macarons. I would have loved to Have seen the faces of the other customers though! Grin

mrszimmerman · 12/09/2011 13:33

LOL LOL LOL LOL viking at shitscuits!
