I think thats a bit unfair re the Battenburgs. I mean I make them but not with insane origami baking parchment and one cake tin like they had FFS. And half the instructions were missing.

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/08/2011 20:14

yes, what was the tin bit all about ?

Taffeta · 17/08/2011 20:14

I am not at all bad at baking, but shite at origami.

KurriKurri · 17/08/2011 20:19

I think it must be hard to stick marzipan on with butter cream, -jam would work much better.

But what about the ones who covered the ends with marzipan, - haven't they ever seen a Battenburg??

MAS - I swear you to secrecy about my weird dream Grin

munkiii · 17/08/2011 20:26

I found directions to this thread! Grin

I was inspired to make more cupcakes today- were pretty good!

Whenisitmysleepytime · 17/08/2011 20:31

This makes me wish for more time to bake without ds helping/ eating flour/ coating himself in flour.

How I long to pipe lovely swirly frosting! Blush

Whenisitmysleepytime · 17/08/2011 20:42

Oh no! Cake on the floor! :(

Whenisitmysleepytime · 17/08/2011 20:51

Hungry now... Where's my cake tin? :)

Bunbaker · 17/08/2011 22:56

DD and I watched it this evening and loved it. I really felt for the young man whose cake ended up on the floor. How can you laugh at that?

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/08/2011 07:37

I suppose there's a certain amount of skill involved in not letting your cake drop on the floor

WhatsWrongWithYou · 18/08/2011 08:08

Watched it last night with DD as well. Drooled over Rob the cakes - was reminded by DD that 'you're married!'
I was amazed by how many rectangular Battenbergs there were - hadn't they heard of trimming off the crust to get the shape you want?
Some of them seem to be trying to go all Masterchef - love that Mary Berry has no truck with that.

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/08/2011 08:47

she is stern !

Bunbaker · 18/08/2011 09:12

Rob! Fit!!!?

He needs a jolly good haircut. His overlong fringe irritated me.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/08/2011 09:21

Finally watched it. Thought the Battenburg was a tough call for so early on. Actually, I would have packed up my kitchen aid scales and gone home as soon as they said it :o Although I hate Battenburg so it doesn't sit right with me to make something I detest!

Did feel for the cake dropping guy.

LetUsPrey · 21/08/2011 18:49

Watched it yesterday on the iPlayer. Rest of series is set to record.

The cupcakes sounded lovely but agree that quite a few of them seemed quite disappointing. However, I'm not really in a position to criticise.

Didn't enjoy Rob dropping his cake. Did, however, like the fact that The Great British Bake Off had to be beeped!

Saw the new book today and there's only one contestant shown on the cover - they're all in the book though - handing Mary Berry a cake. Think it's in a bid to boost sales.

purpleknittingmum · 21/08/2011 19:04

WhatsWrongWithYou I too did a bit of drooling over Rob, even though I am probably old enough to be his mum! And I don't normally like longer hair!!

I like the show but I am not very good at baking!

mrswoodentop · 22/08/2011 11:10

Was surprised the standard seemed a bit low really ,maybe nerves,Paul Hollywood really gets on my nerves but love Mel and Sue and Mary Berry is a god in my kitchen,

Loved the young chap who was in his university baking societyGrin

midnightexpress · 22/08/2011 11:25

I didn't see the last series, but it is definitely more amateur than yer masterchef, isn't it? That Chuggington cake was rubbish, bless 'im.

Dropped cake man - didn't like the rolled up trouser look - a bit too Dexy's Midnight Runners, circa 1985 for my liking. But imagine dropping your cake in front of the viewing millions. That's going to haunt him for years.

OhdearNigel · 22/08/2011 17:18

Did anyone else notice that the "Food Historian" with the red curls is also an "architectural historian" on "Restoration Home" ? I thought that was highly amusing

midnightexpress · 22/08/2011 17:20

YYY, I did I did. That is funny. What she is is a 'TV historian' in actual fact, isn't it?

CarrieOakey · 23/08/2011 20:31

Anyone watching?

onlyaname · 23/08/2011 21:04

I cannot believe that Rob has gone through to next week!

Are they mad...

CarrieOakey · 23/08/2011 21:05

Did he get through after those shambolic tarts? (Had a phone call half way through so bit behind).

CarrieOakey · 23/08/2011 21:07

Best quote of the series so far from Rob "I don't think you've seen the best of me yet" - lets hope not Rob!
