Yay Smile

I loved series 1

OP posts:
vigglewiggle · 06/09/2011 20:43

I love this series and I don't even have a sweet tooth. I do think it should be on on a Sunday evening though!

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 10:11

i agree about the standard of bakers, I seem to remember last year the standard was higher but maybe they want people the audience can relate to.

I love Paul Hollywood and Mary, she looks so disappointed when people let her down.

here is]] Paul Hollywood making scones on youtube.......... sigh..... I wish this was a private tutorial. But is this his own kitchen? Interesting she says rubbing his beardy chin, I mean My Chin (not quite so beardy Blush)

KaraToytown · 08/09/2011 10:51

I've watched all 4 episodes back to back to iplayer. I do not recommend this. I was nearly eating the pc monitor by the end.

GiganticusBottomus · 08/09/2011 11:30

I WANT A SCONE NOW!

Not sure about the old salty dog though, his hair looks like it wouldn't move in a strong wind.

I didn't know you should knead the dough! I've always just mixed mine in the bowl, rolled out and baked. I will try that next time.

Yes this series is the worst thing ever if you are trying to lose weight! Dh and I just sit dribbling watching it. Have to say though, macaroons do not inspire me, they look pretty but they are a bit meh.

Pies next week. I love pies but I NEVER cook them so will be interested to see what they do.

Mmmmmm. I love this program.

I do hope Jason wins, he's lovely.

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 11:45

I know the PIES, they're not my worst weekness, my worst is C A K E, but I did nearly weep at some of the biscuits they looked so yummy.
Some of those pies will give Mel endless opportunities to say soggy bottom. I mean she will say almost nothing else.
I think it is the ultimate tv experience, it's just perfect,
Peril and Cake. Heaven.
Who to win?

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 11:50

The best moment:
Rob shunting his enormous gaNACHE onto the floor, tv heaven.

Holly Pride before a fall re those Brandy Snaps, no?

GiganticusBottomus · 08/09/2011 14:20

It is indeed the perfect tv experience and I do love Mel and Sue.

I want Jason to win (I may have mentioned this before Grin) Holly is starting to scare me a bit although she was very sweet about sharing star baker this week. I also like the lady who won star baker last week (forgotten her name).

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/09/2011 16:45

Yasmin,I think. I'd like Jason or the teacher lady who doesn't get into a tizz, just seems to go along with whatever happens. And you have to admire Mary Anne for her experimental daring. Jo irritates with her little girl voice.

GiganticusBottomus · 08/09/2011 16:47

Oh yes I love the teacher lady but she is languishing in mediocrity at the moment. If I had to go to anyone's house to eat it would be mary anne's I think, proper hearty food, I bet she does a mean pie next week.

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/09/2011 17:06

yes, you'd get a cracking feed at her house !

ExpensivePants · 08/09/2011 17:24

I'd never heard of that Paul bloke before the GBBO last year. Still don't really know who he is.

Pies this week are going to torment me. Can take or leave big cakes and biscuits, macaroons, meh! But pies. Mmmmmm :)

pointydog · 08/09/2011 17:31

Paul is so uber serious. He bugs me. Lighten up, man, you're a baker.

And that ridiculous 'story' about too much salt in bread was just bizarre. A mean-spritied little survey by some anti-salt campaigning group who seem to think that we should forget about shite processed food in britain and high fat content. Instead, we should make sure people stop eating top quality salty bread to avoid heart attacks. Hmm That's why Britain has such a screwed up idea of food in teh first place.

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 17:36

which is the teacher lady, is it Holly? I can't think which one it is.
Anne Marie shows some real flair but Queen Mary has observed that she is "inconsistent" which is not good in Her Majesty's book is it?

pointydog · 08/09/2011 17:41

Is she the other dippy white-haired one? The one who isn't fat?

pointydog · 08/09/2011 17:41

I'm a bit disappointed that none of the contestants really appeal to me.

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 17:48

here's the list of bakers.... and official website of show.
Janet does too much terrified staring for my liking but she's so self effacing it's hard to not warm to her. Did she have the tragic breadbasket? I think I would be more likely to win a nobel prize than be able to make a break basket!

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 17:52

Just looked at GBBO facebook page where someone mentions that Mary says "scrummy" too much, I second that, it's such a Kirstie Allsop word isn't it?

Also some people don't like Mr Hollywood! What's wrong with them?
They haven't seen him needing my scones! I mean... um kneading his scones.... Oh that sounds WORSE
(swoons upon the floor in a heap)

ExpensivePants · 08/09/2011 17:54

PMSL @ him kneading his scones :o

mrszimmerman · 08/09/2011 17:56

It's all too much, it's all too rude the double entendres are covered in flour and all tumescent in my oven. I mean the oven. Oh lordy make it stop!

GiganticusBottomus · 08/09/2011 18:11

Yes Janet is the teacher, I do like her, she's funny but jolly sensible too.
I want to like Joanne but really, your oven on defrost love

Ben had to go because I didn't like his neon cake and his bad hair offended me.
If HRH Mary of cakes wants to say scrummy then scrummy it is. End of discussion. Tsk.

pointydog · 08/09/2011 21:02

I quite like Yasmin. She's not annoying in any way.

I like a bloke who laughs easily. I've never seen that Hollywood loosen up. He must have very tight scones.

mrszimmerman · 09/09/2011 13:44

Yasmin is lovely, I really felt for her when she wept over her maccaroons.
But if Jason won it would be fab, he is kicking ass so far. 19? I'd love to see his mother, I bet she exploded with pride when he got star baker.

Ah Paul..... So SERious.. I love the seriousness!

also giganticus, loving your use of "Tsk"

mrszimmerman · 09/09/2011 13:46

Yes, very tight buns he has! (excuse Yoda speech patterns)
Have you not seen the SCONES clip I posted, he actually has quite a massive tuckuss! But it looks firm to the touch like a couple of hardy cottage loaves.
Brew
Biscuit

TwoIfBySea · 09/09/2011 15:39

I love how Jason enjoys himself so much even when it is going wrong. Surely that is what baking is all about. The fact he is 19 is just brilliant and hopefully would encourage more young people to even think about baking rather than just eating all the time. Really, really, really hope he wins but regardless of that I bet he'll end up like the guy who owns the Hummingbird bakery.

The rest are, like last year, a bit hit and miss. And where did they get them from as there is, unless I've misheard, no one from Ireland, Wales, Scotland or anywhere in England other than the middle and South bit - so British is a misnomer.

Love the show even though I can't stand Paul (who the?) and sorry but Mary Berry reminds me of one of our home ecs teachers who constantly looked like we were something nasty she'd stepped in. The rules they come up with are made up surely it is about the taste and texture.

I have my mum's old (1960s) Bero recipe book plus a whole bunch of cook books inc. Hummingbird. I love baking with my dts (9) so hope to instil the same joy in them that Jason obviously has.
