Yay Smile

I loved series 1

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 23/08/2011 22:36

Paul Hollywood has really got it in for Rob, and to be fair those tarts were rubbish.

Loving Jason and Janet. The blonde bloke is sooooo competative!

Interesting to see the bread one next week as the boys usually like that one and we have lost two already.

Katisha · 23/08/2011 22:36

My worry is that Rob will suddenly do spectacular bread and Paul Holywood will lurve him for ever.

peachsmuggler · 23/08/2011 22:39

I think Rob is trying too hard to show flair and creativity and is forgetting about the details, so he could do marvellously at the bread or eff it up by forgetting the yeast!!

I really want to find 400 quid down the back of the sofa so I can buy a beautiful red Artisan Kitchen Aid. Sigh....

mrswoodentop · 23/08/2011 22:40

I think Paul is biased towards Rob ,he protests too much I think.Angry
Ridiculous that he got through tonight, makes the whole thing pointless,dh reckons the producers insisted he stayed in because he makes good telly

Really pleased to see Jason doing so well ,love the fact that he has a university baking societyGrin

MavisGrind · 23/08/2011 22:45

Rob is too pretty to go out straight away - I give him until the penultimate week.

My money's on Jason to win.

I don't usually watch tv (honest guv) but I quite like this! Smile

Katisha · 23/08/2011 22:52

Mrswoodentop your DH is right.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 23/08/2011 23:10

I only saw the quiche section tonight (teenage taxi duties interfered), but once again the question is begged: are these really the best the BBC could find for a national baking competition?
Who in their right mind would make a pesto quiche? Or add bloody coconut to it? And the idiot woman who didn't even have the oven turned on beggars belief!
Most of this lot claim to bake mainly for their families - can't help pitying the poor kids/spouses, humouring mum or dad as they're faced with yet another disastrous home-baked effort.
< sets up series link >

paulapantsdown · 25/08/2011 23:39

What I found strange is that a few of them said they bake for their families EVERY DAY?! Who in gods name has time for that?

My kids said that pesto quiche looked like something Shrek would like for his tea!

mousymouse · 26/08/2011 08:42

I bake nearly every day (make my own bread) but am not confident doing such fiddly things and birthday cakes for the dc send me into a right panic...
I would be enormously fat it I would bake cake every day cos I would eat it all

Katisha · 26/08/2011 10:52

What I don't like is the sudden appearance of unknown rules. For instance a tart citron can have NO BUBBLES in it, or the pastry has to be brown, whereas the chap's granny who taught him how to bake specified it should be pale.
And last series we had Paul H grandly decreeing that scones should never be anything less than completely level and the egg wash must NOT drip down the side.
Where are these home baking rules published? I have obv been making sub-standard scones and wrongly coloured pastry cases for years.
Oh yes, and you can't serve savoury tarts for afternoon tea, that was another one from last year.
Grr. I don't think it's fair to pull these cheffy rules out of thin air.

SageMist · 26/08/2011 11:15

Has anyone else bought the book yet? I got it at the weekend in Sainsbury's for £9.99. No doubt someone will sell it cheaper though. Anyway the book is very good.

I made the Mary Berry Battenburg yesterday, following the very clear instructions in the book. It was (and still is) absolutely scrumptious. OK its not quite square, but I'm very pleased with it.

Katisha · 26/08/2011 11:17

There's another battenburg in it? THere was a battenburg in last year's book as well.

Katisha · 26/08/2011 11:20

Or is there only one book?

Katisha · 26/08/2011 11:27

So there is a new book. With another battenburg. And I see the cake-dropper is on the front cover..

TheDailyWail · 26/08/2011 14:26

I skimmed through the new book in waterstone's the other day and dont think that I will buy it. I bought Mary berry's baking book instead and have made a few things out of there already. All met with family approval.

midnightexpress · 26/08/2011 15:44

Lurvely Dan Lepard has a new baking book out in September too - and it's only £8.something if you pre-order on Amazon (instead of £25).

Must catch up with the Bake-off - am behind on the pastry. Looking forward to the bread.

peachsmuggler · 26/08/2011 21:38

Think there is a traditional battenberg in last series book and the coffee walnut one in this series book. I am going to get it but after the series ends. Apparently you can get the finalists recipes but only via email once the final is over so as not to spoil but I was worried that there would be clues in the book! Last years had so and so's bread or mini cake so you if you'd bought the book while the series was on you would have been able to work out at least which round that person made it through to. Anyway, will avoid till it's over. It's 10 quid on Amazon.

ppeatfruit · 29/08/2011 15:17

I love this show as well mainly BECAUSE it doesn't take itself too seriously not like masterchef which is ridiculous.

I agree about the odd rules like no bubbles in a lemon tart, that's a new one on me! Also i hate brown pastry it gives me spots!! IMO the tasting is annoying in that everyone has different taste buds e.g. P.H. obviously likes salty food.

The young gorgeous guy Rob? has lovely eyes as does P.H. (I go a bit weak over a guy with light eyes and dark hair) Grin.

I don't think i'll buy the books though give me Delia every time!

toomuchdisneynotenoughJack · 30/08/2011 16:07

num num mum, who cares if Rob can bake or not, he is edible himself! and mr Hollywood is rather divine too! I think Jason is going to walk it though, he seems to have an in built baking ability!!! (mmm dreaming about Robs dimples!)

Abcinthia · 30/08/2011 16:59

I've been enjoying the series though I agree with the other posters who have questioned the contestants being the best of the applicants.

Some of the mistakes were truly dreadful. I'm not much of a baker but I'd make sure to practice things like cakes, breads, pastries etc before going into the competition to make sure I was on top of my game.

peachsmuggler · 30/08/2011 22:21

Oh I live bread week! Lived Jason using his Kitchen Aid while everyone else was huffing and puffing over their kneading. Good man.

Paul Hollywood is quite harsh, but then Mary doesn't hold back either.

What is Rob, floppy fringe/floppy breadbasket still doing there. Well I guess we all know actually.

Really disturbed by all the contestant keeping their rings on while kneading. Dirrrrrrty beasts!!!!

fivegomadindorset · 30/08/2011 22:22

DD is very happy that Rob is still there (disclaimer DD is only 5)

florenceuk · 30/08/2011 22:55

DS loves Rob (and thinks he's French [hmmm]) and also likes Jason. DD loves holly (why are my children so predictable?)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 30/08/2011 23:23

Mary looks disgusted by everything she tastes and then says it tastes wonderful/great texture/lovely crust etc. I'm sure she does it on purpose to make them think they're for the high jump!

Pancakeflipper · 30/08/2011 23:27

Oh I do love this programme. Now I did miss half of tonights programme but I did see last weeks and how is Rob still in there? And the guy who did have to leave tonight ( who made an amazing quiche last week) did he screw up big time this week as I thought last week he could be there until the last couple of weeks.

And that Ben makes good food but he smirks....
