just seen a trailer with the gorgeous Captain Jack and Gwen. No idea when it will be shown bit I'm so happyyyy. We really thought they'd killed it off with the last series.

Anyone know when it's coming??!!

i'm a couple of eps ahead... still watching because i am loyal but i know i wouldn't be if it was a normal american show... plus lots and lots of gay sex coming up, which would be find but the partner is a bit ratso rizzo.

Quenelle · 12/08/2011 10:24

My colleague and I think there must be some special use for the dust because it still has a human consciousness. Or something.

Am very glad Esther has started to speak up a bit. Sorry Dr Juarez bought it though.

There's a great baddie emerging in that camp commander fella, he's obviously going to die horribly at the end.

HarrietJones · 12/08/2011 11:10

I was thinking life energy ?

titchy · 12/08/2011 11:15

Is anyone wondering how someone can be technically alive (becuase obviously if people can't die, they have to be alive) when they have been burnt to a pile of ashes?

whatkungfuthat · 12/08/2011 12:14

Its ok as a standalone US drama but its not Torchwood . I also hate that you can see that PR woman going rogue on Phycorp a mile off.

Perhaps the drug co are going to make drugs out of the ashes to give to aliens so they can exist on earth?

NotDavidTennant · 12/08/2011 12:53

Anyone else finding the Oswald Danes storyline really unconvincing?

FakePlasticTrees · 12/08/2011 12:58

I thought the ash must be for something important too - so either aliens need it and a)gave the drug company a way to make shed loads through pain relief drugs for all the cat. 2 people or b) the aliens run the company or it's not aliens but people using alien technology and they need the dust for something, my bet is if it's not for actual aliens it's going to be for something like anti-aging beauty products (like a botox with human life force or the like in it) so the torchwood lot can all get indignant about the world being messed up for something superficial.

MummyDoIt · 12/08/2011 15:18

I wonder if there's a religious aspect to it. If the person/force behind Miracle Day is a god figure. We had the devil in DW (The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit) so why not God? Particularly when Danes was referring to people as Angels and had to say Revelation (as in the book of the Bible). I also wonder if there's some significance to the name PhiCorp, though not sure what! Phi is a letter of the Greek alphabet but means nothing to me apart from that.

teejwood · 12/08/2011 19:28

Aitch have you seen ep 7 which is supposed to be v Jack-centric? If so was it good?

Also - are you on US pace via torrenting or are you a reviewer with preview tapes?

imho Vera's end was written to progress the plot at the expense of the previous characterisation. She was outspoken, yes, but not completely stupid. I get that she was enraged by what she had seen but she was a smart cookie, she would want to get out of there and do something about it rather than irritate the camp commandantmanager and get shot!

I do think they have streeeeeetched it out quite a lot and there is lots of unnecessary exposition - am quite impatient for them to get on with it, so it would be good to know if we're going to get anywhere in the next ep or two.

teejwood · 12/08/2011 19:31

Also agree with mummy there are lots of angel references there, but i think it will be either:
a) fallen angels or
b) angels who are in fact aliens

Of course it could be neither and just greedy corps using alien tech!

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 21:50

i have seen ep 7, and i'm a previewer so i stream if off a hidden BBC site [mysterious]. it's the jack-centric one you've heard about... fuck me i tell you if it wasn't for rtd and my HOPE that it will come good, there is no way i'd be sticking with it. agree COMPLETELY that dr juarez was the worst agent in the world. also did not believe the romance between her and mekhi phifer.

there is so much bollox in this show, i am furious with it. but... will watch to the end.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 12/08/2011 22:05

I hate it :(

Am still watching out of some bizarre loyalty to it, and in hope that suddenly things improve but it is rubbish, rubbish, rubbish. Too horrible, and at the same time not scary enough.
It has moved too far from the original premise (time rift in Cardiff, links to the Dr etc etc), and just has no context or anything.

Bleugh.

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 22:08

tbh i think if they were going to do away with the britishness of the show they should have got rid of old Johnny Jazz Hands at the same time. i'm sure they thought he would be the bridge between the two casts, but he is far and away the weakest point imo.

anyway... just wait til you see who he's shagging. blerk.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 12/08/2011 22:11

Think you are right Aitch - but it is a shame because up until now I have loved Captain Jack, he was an awesome character.

teejwood · 12/08/2011 22:13
Envy

i know what you mean, though. it's like we have to watch it because it's torchwood and it's RTD and COE was so great and the previous 2 series were a load of enjoyable nonsense and so therefore this should be great and/or enjoyable at SOME point, right?!

i'm praying to the gods of telly addicts that we at least get a satisfying denouement

do you think the problem is that rtd has had too little control or that the writing team just got carried away or just simply that they are trying to wring out what probably would be a good, well-paced 5-parter into 10 episodes?

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 22:16

i have nooooo idea. jane espenson has written some of them (that 'you shoulda seen the other guy' line from jack was hers) so there is no reason for it to be so bad.

i find the high heels, fat gwen, the stupid technology gaps etc REALLY ANNOYING. jack can just flip to ANY FUCKING WHERE in time and space at ANY TIME ffs.

teejwood · 12/08/2011 22:18

Johnny Jazz Hands
Grin

alibaba oh yes, i loved capt jack as a character - it's so frustrating (and no, not in that way) seeing him so useless and worse - not quite as funny

and it's nothing to do with him being mortal - be was mortal before Rose effectively made him immortal - he still had cheek and bravado then...

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 22:18

i mean remember peter capaldi in COE? quiet, tortured, tense... but with this we just have a big fat amorphous slub of plot-fulfilling characterisation and a weird shit sideline in wales. (which is still funner than anything in the US).

also. Gwen looks fat.

teejwood · 12/08/2011 22:20

Aitch I have pondered as to whether he can't use his vortex manipulator as this type of human, though? maybe his current physionomy is not as robust as his old mortal one and he can't zap himself across space and time without kind of being pulverised in some way??

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/08/2011 22:22

That's realism Aitch: she has just had a baby. Better that, than the American Barbie dolls.

But I agree with all the other megative comments. If you watch a bit of the old Torchwood, and then watch an episode of this, you would be forgiven for not knowing you were watching the same concept.

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 22:23

he's still an alien, though, he's going to be the face of bo at some point. deffo born on alien planet, and was capable of using the time vortex thingybob long before he played tardis tonsil hockey with billie piper.

teejwood · 12/08/2011 22:23

peter capaldi is immense though. so many of the actors in Miracle Day are just chewing up the screen.

bring the team back home, rusty. better a low budget, clever, short BBC sole funded (and i appreciate that's the issue) series than this

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 22:24

no, not better. she looks strange. if they wanted her not to look strange and frumpy (which she does) they should have cast less stick-like people around her. she's the fixed point in time there, so to speak.

has the actress just had a baby or something? she looks so much bigger than in prev torchwoods.

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/08/2011 22:25

Is Jack alien? Can some DW fan point me to exactly where this was stated? Because I always thought Jack's identity was a mystery and that all we knew about him was he was 51st century. Nothing to say that couldn't have been 51st century Earth, is there?

AitchTwoOh · 12/08/2011 22:25

i LOVE gwen, i should say. could look at her beautiful freckly face all day. she's the best, most naturalistic thing in it. (which may actually be part of the problem).
