Oh flip, I've looked on here to get some answers about the ending and we're all a bit stumped! I take it that we can make our own ending for Sugar and Sophie then? Perhaps if Agnes didn't die they went to find her?

Sophie was such a lovely little girl, I couldn't bear to think of anything bad happening to her

Spatz · 27/04/2011 22:33

I was also hoping to get a concrete answer.

I think she caught the same train as Sophie, found her in a little cottage with roses round the door and they all three lived happily ever after.

sonearsofar · 27/04/2011 22:36

I thought it was interesting that in the book, Sugar makes her escape from the house by providing some kind of sexual service for the gardener, instead of whacking him with her stick, as seemed to happen in the programme.
My take on it is that, when he told her about how Agnes' body was identified by her hair, she realised, for the 1st time, that she hadn't necessarily died, which empowered her to attack him.

I remember the book ending simply with her walking down the street, the programme gave us more. If she was going back to the East End of London, surely she wouldn't have been waiting in the train station, ditto her intending to commit suicide. I think she's was heading for America - perhaps she didn't give Agnes all her money?

sonearsofar · 27/04/2011 22:39

While I was typing the previous message Spatz and Womma gave the answer that fits - Agnes went from the same station after all - thanks!

Spatz · 27/04/2011 22:39

She clearly had some money because he gave her an envelope with her wages in it.

RoyalFucker · 27/04/2011 22:40

has anybody read another novel by Michael Faber called "Under The Skin" ?

totally different subject matter and one of the most disturbing, hought-provoking and chilling books I have ever read !

Spatz · 27/04/2011 22:40

Sorry, I meant the same train as Agnes.
Know it's rather flip, but like my Dad, I only want to watch happy endings!

RoyalFucker · 27/04/2011 22:40

thought

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 27/04/2011 22:40

Sophie kept saying 'America tomorrow' and Sugar looked quite...hopeful? I thought. Agnes got to her convent, in my head.

Spatz · 27/04/2011 22:42

Surely they would be found if they tried to leave the country?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 27/04/2011 22:44

I assumed that the port security would have been a bit...well, shit in Victorian England. Plus Sugar probably would have known people who knew people who could get papers etc.

CArolCArol · 27/04/2011 22:45

No - she had her wages from Rackham after she gave her savings to Agnes. And she had a at least £10, unless she was bluffing with Cheesman when she tried to bribe him.

No way is she going to kill herself! She's got her spirit back, she remembered her old self when she re-read her book. And she's a resourceful woman who has lived a very hard life. If vulnerable Agnes isn't dead then there's hope for the much tougher Sugar.

My only doubt is why there're sitting on that bench in the station at the end (the same station that Agnes went to) when they need to be hauling their *rses out of there, sharpish?

Kathsmum · 27/04/2011 22:48

Isn't the point that all 3 escape? New book new start, totally optimistic and empowering unlike Victorian drivel it appeared to be with slums etc. Loved it, especially ending, they choose their future, so do we as readers/viewers

CArolCArol · 27/04/2011 22:50

I had been wondering why she got that paper out at the end. Now ? @ Kathsmum ? I think it's literally she's about to start a new book and a new life.

edam · 27/04/2011 22:53

This is a spoiler....

but Faber gave an ending to Sugar's tale in a later collection of short stories...

From what I recall, Sugar and Sophie made it to Australia. And did OK - there's not much about what happened to them out there, the short story picks up on their return to London a couple of decades later.

LoveLeonardCohen · 27/04/2011 22:54

I thought that they would be getting the train to find Agnes....ahhhghhh....and open end, I wanted a nice happy closed end, showing us where they went off to. Rackam, what an arse!

RoyalFucker · 27/04/2011 22:55

Thanks for that edam - I feel much happier knowing that Sugar and Sophie had a life together
