Chris O'Dowd's todger! I can't watch the IT crowd in the same way again!

oooo I've just watched this on Sky + and it's brilliant. I love a bit of victorian gothic perviness - it reminded me a lot of Sarah Waters, only darker (if that's possible). Looking forward to the next instalment. God bless the BBC!

WillowFae · 13/04/2011 22:44

A wonderful adaptation of an amazing book! :D

WillowFae · 13/04/2011 22:46

Oh, and you can go and visit Sugar's room at Mrs Castaway's (I was there a couple of months ago).

It was filmed at 18 Folgate Street, Spitalfields. Her room is in the attic on the top floor. Thoroughly recommended!

Loving this

Loved the book too

Thingumy · 14/04/2011 00:25

I love it.

otisdriftwood · 14/04/2011 13:46

I like it...I will get the book for my birthday.

The todge was a bit alarming....but you can't have everything I suppose

BooToYouToo · 14/04/2011 14:24

God this is great - makes Downton Abbey look like an AmDram production.

Sugar's farewell to Mrs Castaway was so poignant.

JeffVadar · 14/04/2011 17:11

Didn't really know whether to post this or not, as you all seem to love it, but I'm not enjoying it at all!

I loved the book (one of my all time faves) and I agree that they have got the look just right, the cast and sets are brilliantly put together. But how can they possibly do such a wonderful book justice in just four episodes? It needed 10 at least.

I'm sure it's because of budgetary constraints as costume drama is so expensive, but then why choose that book? It is so rich in detail and description -Sugar's friendships with all the other girls, the reason behind Agnes' breakdown, Henry and Mrs Fox's friendship; all so beautifully written and each character fully brought to life , yet none of this comes over in the programme. DH (who hasn't read it) had no idea what was going on and lost interest halfway through (except the rude bits, obviously).

It's just like Any Human Heart, a great opportunity missed by trying to cram it into too few episodes. I'm not sure I can bear to watch the rest of it Sad.

Bunbaker · 14/04/2011 17:21

I am loving it, possibly because I haven't read the book. Next time I get anything from Amazon I will definitely buy the book.

Malificence · 14/04/2011 17:44

Only four episodes? Sad it struck me as a bit "Steampunky" too, which I love.

Richard E. Grant does creepy very well.

mosschops30 · 14/04/2011 17:57

Have i missed the first two?
Anywhere i can watch them both?
Sad

Rollergirl1 · 14/04/2011 21:02

I missed the first and so didn't want to watch last nights so can't really comment. Although as others have said from the little bit I saw it is absoulutely beautifully shot. Must have cost a fortune!

Thingumy · 14/04/2011 21:20

Moss you can watch them both on iplayer

Here

Longstocking2 · 14/04/2011 22:42

Loved it!
O'Dowd's todger notwithstanding!
Romala Garai a top actress.
Good on you X files woman whatever your name is.
Beautifully filmed, designed etc.
Great music.
Top slightly mindless Victoriana with stylish bonking.
Boo Hiss Richard E Grant pervy Doctor what IS HE DOING TO HER?

paulapantsdown · 14/04/2011 23:02

thread hijack but I totally agree with honey above, that the BBC is just bloody brill isn't it?
I got my licence renewal in the post the other morning while listening to R6, looking forward to another episode of Crimson, and still feeling all warm and fuzzy after Lambing Live! Well worth the £150.

Longstocking2 · 14/04/2011 23:16

Hear Hear Paulpants, I agree, I'd pay it for the radio I listen to alone, let alone the top telly too.
I'm just prostrate at the Wonders of the Solar System, just watched two on watch again with ds who's 10 and both loved it.

EricNorthmansMistress · 15/04/2011 22:17

Longstocking he's checking to see whether her womb has moved Confused Angry They believed hysteria was due to wandering wombs. He is clearly sexually abusive though :( alluding to his power to force her to have examinations if she was committed. Yuk.

PalomaBronzada · 16/04/2011 10:43

I found this on iplayer yesterday, and will read the book when the series finishes. I'm feeling spoiled to death in the last couple of weeks, what with 'Christopher and his kind',and 'Women in love'. Brilliant!

SueSylvesterforPM · 18/04/2011 14:48

Frimblypoo · 18/04/2011 18:25

I still love it, I am very excited that the book will hold more. An author I did not know about! Yay!

coldcomfortHeart · 18/04/2011 19:08

Recommend the book to all who haven't read it- enjoyed the second episode but they missed a couple of bits out I thought were pretty important- like Sugar buying a coat from a strawberry seller for Agnes after the opera (rather than giving her own one) and also they really glossed over whether Rackham has sex with Agnes or not, in the book you're not left wondering! Otherwise very good and I cried at the Henry/Mrs. Fox scene...

Is Christopher Sugar's son?

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 20/04/2011 22:34

lettinggo - he can't be as she is only 19 - but she wants to look after him - she has a strong motherly instinct (haven't read the book - i assume she is now pregnant).

Agnes would have been better off in a convent all along - he obviously hurt her the first time they had sex and she hates anything like periods etc. and also couldn't face being pregnant. i thought last week she had post natal psychosis but it looks like she was mad and vulnerable all the time. Not to mention the doctor interfering with her and her husband now back for more while she's doped up....

Honeymum · 20/04/2011 22:41

SPOILERAMA ALERT (for those who haven't seen episode 3 Grin)

Teaser for next week looks exciting!!!

Did Sugar get rid of Agnes or was she really trying to help? Sex scene Agnes/Arthur very difficult to watch and very well done. I don't watch horror films as a rule, but the shot of Agnes crawling along the landing reminded me of The Ring.

And that poor little girl?

I have the book now- £1.50 on Kindle at the moment, peeps.
