Loving this series and will be very sad to see it go tonight.

Having read the book, I personally think they've got Mrs Fox and Dr. Curlew's characters completely wrong (he's her father in the book not her brother). I won't say any more as I don't want spoil it for others.

I also have a great deal of sympathy for William Rackham but I'm guessing I'm probably the only one Smile

Wasn't the League of Gentlemen character burned to death in flagrante delicto with Mrs Fox?
Did I dream that?
Did he dream that?
I'm confused

EricNorthmansMistress · 27/04/2011 11:47

He dreamt that, and apparently burnt to death while imagining it.

I think the series has veered too much towards the 'men are bastards' angle, whereas I found the book far more ambiguous with all the characters and their traits.

They are all extremely flawed personalities and nobody is portrayed as 'good or bad' - everyone has a very good reason for the way they are and the bad desicions they make. I found myself constantly switching loyalties - although I stand by feeling very sorry for William and I think what Sugar does is unforgivable but enough on that subject for today anyway!

Mrs Fox and Dr. Curlew are all wrong though and I feel like I have to leap to their defense (as well as William Rackhams). And yes MrsvWoolf, they've made Mrs Fox a bit weird, I felt she was the most 'modern' of the women and really liked her in the book.

Now how good a book and series must it be that we all discuss the individual characters rather than just the story line??!!

Right I am opening the vino now in readiness. This has been the best thing on tv for years(trounces Downton abbey) and I am going out tomorrow to buy the book.

I missed the first half of tonight's episode so am a bit confused by the ending but still really enjoyed it

MarionCole · 27/04/2011 22:13

But where would a penniless woman with a young child go to in Victorian England?

RoyalFucker · 27/04/2011 22:14

to a bawdy house, of course !!

MarionCole · 27/04/2011 22:15

Indeed

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 27/04/2011 22:18

I thought they were off to America.

pink4ever · 27/04/2011 22:20

No I think sugar was going to commit suicide(think I prefer that ending than taking poor sophie to a brothel!).

I want to know what happens next!!! And what happened to Agnes!!! Great, great series - really gripping. Who knew that Sugar would be dismissed and disposed of so coldly?? And indeed, where to with little Sophie? Lots of questions - 2nd viewing and reading of novel required.
