Is it just me, or is it really just not funny? I feel almost embarrassed watching it - it is so cringy!

I love Miranda!

However someone mentioned "My Family" earlier - I loathe it. It's badly acted, OVER acted rubbish.

maresedotes · 02/02/2011 16:41

I'm with you jennymac I don't find her funny at all. Glad she's left Not Going Out too.

upahill · 02/02/2011 16:45

Flippin Heck Gabby that's some vague news there - it's programme but I haven't seen it and I don't know what it's called but it looks good!

itsalarf · 02/02/2011 17:05

I love it too. Totally see why some people don't but she makes me laugh. Patricia Hodge is genius in it. My favourite was in the sushi restaurant when she went round on the conveyer belt thingy. It's not my usual thing either.

jennymac · 02/02/2011 17:13

TBH (and hoping I don't get completely slated!) - I think she won so many awards because the "powers that be" thought it was time that some comedy awards were given to a woman, and Miranda was the token woman.

I love Miranda, and My Family they are more like my life than Little Britain and Gavin and Stacey. Therefore I have no problem in saying I'm BBC middle class, and I like it.

But by the same token I have no problem with having Little Britain on the telly, having no relation to my life. Why do other people dislike having programmes different from their lives on the telly?

Do you never watch telly for escapism, and thank god that your life is not like what you are watching?

valiumredhead · 02/02/2011 17:27

I think it helps if you are a bit silly, to appreciate Miranda Grin

upahill · 02/02/2011 17:30

I love the silliness of the Mighty Boosh but Miranda just goes on about the same things again and again and abloodygain!!

Figgyrolls · 02/02/2011 17:37

But she is funny on that just above clean level of funniness, something to appeal to all the family without it turning too smutty. I have no problem with smutty but I think truly funny is funny without being rude. I think she is hilarious but I am so glad that it is happening to her and not me as I am rather clumsy at times, although if you had shown me only one episode and it was the one in the psych's office I would have thought it was tosh, so she doesn't get it right all the time for me!

valiumredhead · 02/02/2011 17:42

That episode where her dress gets caught in the taxi, just as it drives off!!! Shock Grin

jepa · 02/02/2011 17:52

I love Miranda - it's what I call comedy
Even if you're not a fan"- google the sushi restaurant bit
I was on the floor Grin
Genius

noddyholder · 02/02/2011 17:52

She definitely had the whiff of 'token' at those awards.

valiumredhead · 02/02/2011 17:59

jepa - that is comedy GENIUS at the sushi restaurant Grin

QuickLookBusy · 02/02/2011 18:00

The recent awards she got were decided by public votes, so there was no "tokenism" there.

cestlavie · 02/02/2011 18:05

You know, I think there's a variety of reasons people like Miranda, including me:

  • It's not a 'traditional' sitcom in that she talks to and engages with the audience. Not as quirky or funny a format as Flight of the Concords, for example, but different for sure
  • it's very, very British vs. the swathe of US imported comedies most people are used to
  • she's a classic comedienne, rather than an actress, which you rarely see on TV role
  • it's cheeky, silly humour rather than offensive, belittling humour
  • it doesn't try to be clever, satirical or knowing comedy (which you get a lot of)
  • she's an engaging character for lots of people
TerrysNo2 · 02/02/2011 18:05

It is what I call hilarious.

In fact I would go as far to say as I have such fun watching it.

jonicomelately · 02/02/2011 18:06

What QuickLookBusy said Hmm

noddyholder · 02/02/2011 18:08

The peoples choice awards yes not the others.

jonicomelately · 02/02/2011 18:09

All of the NTA awards were voted for by the public.

PandaG · 02/02/2011 18:22

absolutely love it, DH and I cry with laughter. Have enjoyed the interviews I have seen with her also.

BendyBob · 02/02/2011 18:26

I think if you find more surreal things funny (and I do) then Miranda and Outnumbered etc are never going to hit the spot in a million years. It feels too 'safe' to be funny to me.

dustwhatdust · 02/02/2011 18:44

what mightymonkey said yes it's the farce-like aspect that i don't like .
Like jennymac OP, i don't find it funny, but silly - there's cringy good ( eg the office) and Miranda is cringey bad !

However i have lots of friends who love it ,but have to admit Ive only seen it once . maybe i should give it another go ?

QuickLookBusy · 02/02/2011 18:46

And at the Comedy Awards she won "The People's Award" voted by the public during the show. I loved the look on Michael McIntyre's [sp?] face, when she won. He obviously thought he had it in the bag!

noddyholder · 02/02/2011 18:50

I was talking about the comedy awards not the NTAs

valiumredhead · 02/02/2011 18:52

Michael McIntyre makes me cringe! Funny the first time I saw him but after that , nope!
