I have an Irish traveller background and this programme disgusts me. Yes we have a fondness for bling but this programme does not represent our culture as a whole.
My daughter wore a simple dress for her holy communion as did her relatives. There were children in outrageous outfits , they tended to come from White working class background with no traveller history that I aware of.
I am not seeking to deny that traveller families like this exist but, in my experience it is not how we all live. You could not broadcast such stereotypes about any other community.
As other have said the holy communion shown was always going to be extreme because it was a "gypsy" only wedding.
I did have a huge wedding dress, why not it was my special day? I could walk though! My bridesmaids were not dressed as slappers or caked in fake tan.
Look hard enough at any culture and you will find people to poke fun at in a sneery manner. It is quite sad when children are chosen.
I am hoping this programme will take an opportunity to look at the prejudice we face and the erosion of our community and way of life.
I am glad I have raised my children to have the confidence to deal with any grief they may get tomorrow.
