Promising start to the series last night - just as The Guardian promised, Prime Suspect meets State of Play with a bit of Wallander (i.e. Scandinavian and with subtitles). Really moving scene where the couple whose daughter's body had been found then tried to explain it to their younger children.

Anyone else see it?

Yes and Morten cleared himself early on re the emails. I thought he was jealous of Troel's success, but that's not to say Morten would be his successor, is it? Maybe he likes Rie? Nanna wouldn't have gone for any of them so far except maybe Troels or the greasy leader of the coalition (can never remember his slimy name.)

Wigwam, I've only seen the Krister Henrikkson version of Wallander and it was so good I never want to see anyone else do it. Truly marvellous. I watched them back to back and was stunned for weeks by the end.

Fivecentsplease · 10/03/2011 12:57

It's good - a bit brooding and introspective perhaps, and, well, Brannaghish. Still got the dark northern thing going on, and same good plot lines, but not as subtle as the Swedish one( I thought).

Fully admit the tendency to fix on the one you see first.... I could never see anyone but Krister whatsit as the True Wallander. Found the Big Fatty Wallander (film version one) a bit gross!

wigwam1973 · 10/03/2011 13:01

Atswim was that the version shown recently on BBC4? I've had a quick look at Amazon and the boxed sets all seem expensive (except the Ken Bran one).

I was quite a late-comer to The Killing. One of the things I loved was watching 3 or 4 episodes at a time on Iplayer. I got so immersed - am already worried I will suffer withdrawal symptoms when it finishes. How sad is that?

teej · 10/03/2011 13:03

hi everyone
snowed under at work so no time to ponder today but am not going to look at US trailer until this is done and dusted - it'll only distract me!
withagoat what is "Lund" saying on twitter? could be a scream but if there is any chance of a spoiler i don't want to know!
muminlondon can't recall if i have thanked you for starting this thread before - thank you!! looking forward to Spiral, berets and bretons Wink
blackduck i know what you mean - started reading the Steig Larrson trilogy back to back and had to have a break after the second one.
i also took Meyer rushing off at the end of the last eppie as a sign that he had realised Lund was in danger...
and yes we are overanalysing to death! on which note
cornerstone rofl - much chance of us stopping obsessing!
fivecents ah the GeneGenie! I think he would be Meyer's sort of cop, no?
jammie agree those scenes were heart-rending - part of what elevates this series above a lot of the others...
wigwam personally i like all the wallanders so give kenny a whirl. IMHO the UK one is pretty close to the swedish ones in terms of tone etc PMSL at you updating your incident board! certainly they didn't rename wallander "darren"

teej · 10/03/2011 13:06

the man in the window - shorter and with curly-ish hair - that would fit jens holck more than morten, no?

teej · 10/03/2011 13:10

atswim, fivecents, krister is my favourite wallander, too, but kenny gives it a good go. in the rolf version it was the first adaptation wasn't it, so they didn't have the same budgets etc - that is quite obvious. the later ones with him are a bit more slick but you'll know what i mean when i say there were a few bits where i went "ewwwww"!

Blackduck · 10/03/2011 13:10

But then EVERYONE is shorter than Troels so that clue isn't a great deal of help!!

Yes Teej Larson is viloent, but for sheer depressing subject matter try some of the others! I alternate with some Italian crime stuff (sunny climes, fab descriptions of food and just less brooding and depressive....)

teej · 10/03/2011 13:12

Blackduck Zen by any chance? what did you think of the beeb version?

Blackduck · 10/03/2011 13:33

Have read some Zen - I thought visually the TV version was lovely (and so was Rufus :) ) but it felt wrong....Also read the Leon stuff (set in Venice - love him and his wife...) and the ones set in Sardinia (name escapes me...)

wigwam1973 · 10/03/2011 17:58

Incidentally, I think it more likely that ether would be added to a cloth and held over nose (it's like chloroform, according to wiki Wink), rather than injected. Not sure if that has any bearing - probably not! Who else would have access to ether, apart from Rama (who used it as fuel for something)?

atswimtwolengths · 10/03/2011 19:35

I can't think of anyone except a scientist who'd be using ether. Is it used in garages for anything? Why did Rama use it? Was it to do with decorating?

Have to say I am still expecting a scene where Theis promises his sons he will hire a DVD for them and asks Pernille's sister for the card... Pernille will cop on and give one of her marvellous stary faces.

Prolesworth - yes that was where the ether fitted in...who else would have or use ether? Narrows eyes and stares at inciden board......

atswimtwolengths · 10/03/2011 19:56

:) @ everyone.

I can't remember the last time I've been so obsessed with a tv series. It's a million times better being able to discuss it with other obsessives others.

muminlondon · 10/03/2011 19:58

Hi all, I am so pleased to find other BBC4 fans - I looked for Swedish Wallander threads at the time but everyone seemed to be watching Strictly instead.

wigwam1973 · 10/03/2011 20:07

atswim you're right about Pernille's stares. Her face is very expressive I think.

Found myself watching the last five minutes of last episode again to check we were right about car/keys/gun/Meyer knowing Lund's whereabouts (we were, by the way Smile and noticed (missed it before) shot of Pernille walking down the street. Do you think she's going to Boils to try to track down more info from that barman?

Oh, and did you see the latest on the jumper in the Guardian here? Interview with the actress.

OP posts:
Fivecentsplease · 10/03/2011 20:24

Thanks for the link muminlondon - love the way even the actors didn't get the script more than one episode at a time: explains a lot about the ambiguity of all the leads, as there's no hint of acted guilt on show. And tons of suspicion....

UpSinceCrapOClock · 10/03/2011 20:32

:o even Danish news has picked up on the British fan club of Lund's jumper.

wigwam1973 · 10/03/2011 20:33

prolesworth I too am counting down the minutes....

muminlondon thanks for link to article. Interesting stuff, especially the fact that the actress was so involved in the series right from the beginning, and even played a part in 'creating' Lund (and that she sometimes wears the jumpers at home).

Also DELIGHTED that BBC4 def showing season 2 later in the year! Hurrah [excited emotion].

Right, back to theorising about the ether. I wonder if you might also use it in the removals business for.....um.......dunno......

muminlondon · 10/03/2011 20:34

Yes, it really works doesn't it? Also explains why we have become so obsessed by whatever Lund noticed even when it turned out to be a false lead.

BTW could Pernille have been looking for Theis? Odd that she wasn't concerned about where he could have gone.

OP posts:
atswimtwolengths · 10/03/2011 20:41

She's losing control, Pernille, isn't she?

It wouldn't surprise me if she kills someone in the next couple of episodes. If she does, we can be sure it won't be the guilty person!

Thanks for the link to the article - really interesting that she didn't know who'd done it, either. I liked the reasoning behind her jumper, too; I remember Helen Mirren wearing suits and trying so hard to be one of the men. It's good to see Lund not bother with that.

muminlondon · 10/03/2011 20:55

Did you ever see Above Suspicion? That was one annoying wardrobe.

OP posts:
teej · 10/03/2011 22:20

evening all!

blackduck rufus was looking good very professional i have to say. quite enjoyed it but def not quite true to the originals!
wigwam rofl at you wiki-ing the clues Grin
atswim totally right about pernille
mum oh did we have swedish wallander threads? must check in next time they're on! great link btw - love the fact the cast didn't even know till the end Smile
upcrack i did actually copy and paste that into google translate so i could read it nice they are appreciating the fact we are liking it as much as they did & not really taking the proverbial!

just had a quick look at the start of eppy 2 before it disappears
quick question, esp if anyone has watched it recently. did they ever say anything about the screwdriver they found in the boot beside the body?
