So, this is a very 'moral' culture for you then. Hmm

I think the Roma originate from India, unlike the Irish travellers.

IMHO the dresses aren't usually for gadjo consumption (or viewing). There is a sense of 'look don't touch' about it all. Same with the dancing.

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 18/01/2011 22:14

Thingumy, yes there are differences between gypsies and Travellers. The two tradiditons have completely separate origins with Gypsies originating in Northern India and Travellers originating in Ireland.

There are some aspects of their lifestle that are similar but they have different traditions, customs, language etc.

thenightsky · 18/01/2011 22:15

What was the 'P' word that swanley used? I missed that bit.

seth Do you live in Lincolnshire? that funeral procession sounds like one we had locally here.

Huffymuffy · 18/01/2011 22:15

That poor Chyenne. Her friend did look worried when she was calling her. Hope that horrible boy in the pink vest gets what he deserves...

Chaotica · 18/01/2011 22:16

The romanian (Kalderash) roma you see here are usually modestly dressed. But British/czech etc roma usually aren't, except when they're cold.

Don't know about intermarriage - some Roma don't like it, others are happy with it (but the non-Romany partner usually marries-in).

juneybean · 18/01/2011 22:16

Pki @ thenightsky*

potplant · 18/01/2011 22:17

Thenightsky - he drove past an Indian wedding and called it a 'p*' wedding

memphis83 · 18/01/2011 22:19

they leave scool before puberty to apparently look after their younger siblings to prepare them for marriage, and its also a way of them keeping up with traditions without learning outside influences

Normantebbit · 18/01/2011 22:23

I think Irish traveller culture is incredibly insular - even as regards their immediate environment ; the inside of the caravan is kept spotless, the outside is just left for rubbish.

From what I saw on that programme, it seems to almost be a siege mentality in terms of control of women and girls.

Mummy2Bookie · 18/01/2011 22:23

It was really good tonight. The little girl in the pink communion dress was so adorable.

ItsAllaBitDeathlyQuiet · 18/01/2011 22:23

The girls are peacocks - they are nothing without a man, it has been beaten into them to find one.

When they have their man he can do what he wishes with his "property".

It's a terrible, terrible life.

Don't even think about the babies they have, it's too distressing.

c4 plus 1? or 4od.

LittleDonkin · 18/01/2011 22:25

I am glad they are covering more aspects of travellers lives and not just focusing on the weddings (even though they are the best part!)

I really didnt like seeing Cheyenne being "grabbed" if a lad had me pinned up to a fence and wouldnt let me go I would tell him to p*ss off, Knee him in the misters and run!

OP posts:
claig · 18/01/2011 22:26

'he drove past an Indian wedding and called it a 'p*' wedding'

a posh wedding?

me23 · 18/01/2011 22:28

I thought it was very Sad especially the grabbing and the "it's a boy's world" comments.

It most certainly is.

Huffymuffy · 18/01/2011 22:29

Do the girls have home births or use hospitals and all the lovely drugs? Do they use birth control?

Huffymuffy · 18/01/2011 22:30

Cheyenne looked quite distressed tbh.

Chaotica · 18/01/2011 22:33

Romany women often prefer hospitals. (Giving birth in the caravan makes it 'unclean' (you bet!) and so it's traditional to leave.)

sue52 · 18/01/2011 22:35

I was interested to note that despite the lack of formal education the girls were so articulate, there were no "you know what I mean like" speakers.

Huffymuffy · 18/01/2011 22:37

Thank you. I just wondered. What with their separation from men and clear keeness for hygiene and appearance. I can imagine perfectly made up mummy appearing with beautiful unwrinkled baby! I quite like their values. Apart from that horrible boy with Cheyenne. Can imagine her dad will sort him out.
