it could grow on me..intriguing so far!

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 26/07/2010 10:29

It's filmed in Cardiff

TigersChick · 26/07/2010 10:31

Raahh - I saw something with the cabbie = murderer story line too; I think you may be right that it was Luther. I think that's why it was more obvious than it might otherwise have been ...

I really enjoyed it last night. I'm not a devote of ACD (not got an aversion, just not something I've ever been interested in) but I thought it was very good.

One day last week there was an interview on Richard Bacon's show on 5live with the chap behind this series (plus the director of a SH play in the West End and another SH devote) it was an interesting interview and will be on the iPlayer if anyone wants to listen to it - sorry I can't remember which day.

TigersChick · 26/07/2010 10:33

Apparently - according to the people in that interview, at least - House is based on Sherlock Holmes ... which I can totally see.

Raahh · 26/07/2010 10:44

There are loads of clues in House about SH (which Dh had to point out to me, I can be at bit slow), like his original address, his drug taking, WIlson/Watson etc. Love House.

And i agree, that if i hadn't seen Luther, the cabbie plot prob wouldn't have struck me so soon (well, it was DH who picked up on it- I'm too pregnant to enjoy things other than at face value at the mo!!).

(DH also proved he DOES pay attenttion when sneering at me watching drivel, as he was the one who spotted that the female officer was the useless teacher in Waterloo Road before i did..)

I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

foureleven · 26/07/2010 10:45

Oh god, I read this quickly and thought it was a babyname thread! Haha was going to spring on and tell you you are a nutcase!

As you were.

SleepingLion · 26/07/2010 10:49

Yes, the House connection to Holmes is well-documented: James Wilson having the same initials as Watson is deliberate, for example.

EightiesChick · 26/07/2010 11:06

I used to watch House avidly and never H connection! Will enjoy looking out for that now. I have read some SH but a while ago so I don't know it hugely well. I am now going to re-read to enrich watching the series though.

The cabbie as murderer is also in The Bone Collector.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/07/2010 11:21

And most obviously Holmes -> Homes -> House

megapixels · 26/07/2010 12:55

I did wonder about the engraving on the mobile phone too. The deductions about JW's brother was originally from observing a pocket watch, so it was quite a clumsy transposition. I did wonder how SH would explain the drunkenness, as originally it was explained by the scratches caused around the area where the key was inserted for winding. On the mobile, the scratching around the charging point was pretty neat.

5Foot5 · 26/07/2010 13:09

We all enjoyed this very much. I think it was a clever twist to take it to the present day since there have been so many adaptations of the original that it would be difficult to get a new angle otherwise. It was ckleverly done though as they kept all those "Sherlocky" traits but updated them. For instance in the books he deduces loads about someones character from a watch so it sort of made sense to apply it to a mobile phone.

Some laugh out loud bits too e.g. "Three Patch Problem"

UnquietDad A few weeks ago I was reading an interview with Matt Smith and he said they were filing Dr Who in Cardiff at the same time that Sherlock was filming so the cast kept bumping in to each other and having bizarre conversations - "Hello Sherlock", "Hello Doctor"

Oh yes here is another who saw the cabby link. Mind you - I was way off with one of my other deductions. When SH left the scene of the murder and told everyone the clue was "Pink" I said "Well obviously, the victim was a red head so would never have dressed in pink so the murderer must have put the coat on her - derr!!!"

Vintagepommery · 26/07/2010 13:14

Thought it was a bit fast-paced and over-doing the genuis bit at 1st - but it grew opn me - lots of good characters there.

Also love anything with Rupert Graves in.

Much better than the film version by Guy Ritchie which dragged.

Crapweasel · 26/07/2010 13:14

My brother has an engraved itouch (gift from his girlfriend)!

What do people think about the "drugs bust"? Was a bit confused that Watson kept saying "there's nothing to find here" and SH just looked cagey. I know that SH injects ?cocaine in one of the books. Will the BBC dare to make such a "cool" character a casual drug taker?

marantha · 26/07/2010 13:20

They should make him a drug user, it's in the books. Although, taking drugs back then was legal. So much for "Victorian Values" (!) Presumably he injects drugs in this updated version too. It seems obvious that the police turn a blind eye to it in return for his help solving crimes.
I hope they don't skip over this (drug use) because else it would make the show shallow and childish.

alicatte · 26/07/2010 13:25

I just so happen to have read all of the original books - I don't want to use the word fan but ... !

I loved the brilliant film making especially the use of texts as a metaphor for paring ideas down to the main points. I wonder what else they are going to come up with. There were so many references to the originals including the engraved itouch, which was a watch in the original stories.

Only three you say - bother, I am going on holiday.

I didn't expect to like it but I really did.

paddypoopants · 26/07/2010 13:33

It was all a bit CSI Dr. Who for me - but then I had a crush on Basil Rathbone when I was a kid.

alicatte · 26/07/2010 13:36

CSI Dr.Who!! - I love it ppp

LaineyW · 26/07/2010 13:41

Very much enjoyed the "It's a three patch problem" too.

diddl · 26/07/2010 13:43

Weren´t the patches a reference to the drug taking?

He looked as if he could have been injecting at that point-or was that just me?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/07/2010 13:47

They seem to be implying the drug taking without actually showing it, at least at this stage. Remember Holmes only injected (I think) between cases when he was bored. I think patches are equivalent of pipe smoking (and "three patch problem" rather bears that out).

JulesJules · 26/07/2010 13:58

Yes we loved it too, enjoyed the nods to the original, especially the three patch problem.
Liked the humour in it too.

Only negative points were the obviousness of it being the taxidriver and how long it took SH to realise, and Mark Gatiss who is so recognisable as 'Mark Gatiss doing creepy voice' that I just can't believe in him as the character, iyswim.

Sorry to see there are only 3 - presumably they will make more?

mixedmamameansbusiness · 26/07/2010 14:00

DH wouldnt let me watch as he doesnt like the man playing Watson. am going to read through and see whether I should iPlayer.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 26/07/2010 14:11

Oh and The Mentalist is my favourite love SB.

mrsshackleton · 26/07/2010 14:12

Really liked it, it was witty and involving

Waaay better than the film

Agree that the taxi driver was too obvious but apart from that I was pleasantly surprised

TheFoosa · 26/07/2010 14:14

love a bit of Cumberbatch, he has luverly eyes

GabbyLoggon · 26/07/2010 14:14

gave it a miss;but may dip in later. Thought the original was a funny spoof.
