Enjoying too the ruthless side to JW, not so much the bland foil to the great man.

In the stories he provides armed support but rather pointlessly since it's SH who disarms the villain with a riding crop or some obscure martial art picked up whilst in Tibet.

Dawnybabe · 25/07/2010 23:36

Am disappointed that Sherlock didn't get that it was a taxi driver when I had been shouting it out for about 20 mins. If I can figure it out, that's poor writing!

Not overly impressed.

Undutchable · 25/07/2010 23:42

I LOVED it, as did DH who is a huge fan of the books - he thinks it was written and produced by people who must love the books. Also loved Watson - not a stupid arse like other portratals.

Agree with Dawnybabe that I realised it was the taxidriver. Didn't spoil it though.

caramelwaffle · 25/07/2010 23:42

Fabulous!

(except ignoring the "there's a cabbie waiting downstairs for you... " 3 X) gah

Undutchable · 25/07/2010 23:42

portrayals

BuckaroosLasso · 25/07/2010 23:43

I think the writers are clever in making us think we are - i was shouting 'taxi driver' at the screen too. Unless we just are basically clever Dawny.

BC brilliant as ever. Where do i know Rupert Graves from????

EightiesChick · 25/07/2010 23:53

Was anyone else thinking of the Princess Bride when the 'choose which pill is the poisoned one' dilemma came up? I was convinced that would be the explanation so was a little miffed when we didn't get one. However, I enjoyed it immensely. Appointment TV for the next 2 Sundays.

Poshwellies · 25/07/2010 23:53

Dh and I think Moriarty is Sherlock's brother.

We aren't Sherlock fans so could be barking up the wrong tree

We were shouting "taxi driver!" and thought of TPB as well.

MathsMadMummy · 25/07/2010 23:59

loved it. never enjoyed anything sherlock holmesy before. it was actually DH who wanted to watch it although as a SH geek he was worried he'd hate it. but he loved it too. hurrah

BuckaroosLasso · 26/07/2010 00:02

The Mentalist is basically the same character but tanned and Australian American....

BuckaroosLasso · 26/07/2010 00:02

He owes alot to SH....

nymphadora · 26/07/2010 01:33

MarkGatiss, the female police woman & someone I can't remember who were all in Dr who. Written by Steven Moffat.

PigeonPie · 26/07/2010 07:19

DH and I really enjoyed it too. Also thought of TPB with the pills. Am not very familiar with Arthur Conan Doyle but felt it converted very well into 21st century setting.

Hope there's more in the pipeline.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 26/07/2010 07:31

agree re Princess Bride and pills

I liked 'it's a three patch problem' (original had a three pipe problem)

but who engraves mobile phones?

grumpypants · 26/07/2010 09:29

Loved it, but the plot was rubbish. So obvious he was making them commit suicide, so obvious it wd be a cabbie, etc etc. But, the acting (except for the stereotypical pysch cabbie character) was amazing, and I even like the Watson bloke whereas usually I loathe him in stuff.

Love The Mentalist too.

Interesting portrayal of Sherlock - wondering if they were hinting at asd traits, with all the factual stuff - knowledge of routes etc.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/07/2010 09:36

I loved it, but I think the original Granada series was better Sherlock Holmes (I like my book adaptations to be word perfect to the original).

marantha · 26/07/2010 09:40

I liked the portrayal of the characters- thought the two male leads were excellent (although nobody has played Holmes as well as Jeremy Brett imo) and, yes, Holmes probably has asd traits. He's not normal, obviously. Nor is he cuddly or sociable.

The plot irritated me, though. It seemed to centre around Holmes -rightly- seeing the game as chance while the cabbie thinking himself clever and the game being like chess.
Which made him (the cabbie) look a bit dull cos if the bottles were absolutely identical, then it obviously would be a game of chance and not chess.
Also, the cabbie's claim that he wouldn't be so crass as to point a gun at someone's head was obviously rubbish because it was fundamentally a case of "take the pill or get shot". Nonsense.

TheFallenMadonna · 26/07/2010 09:42

I liked it, but then I like anything with Rupert Graves in it. Even that film where he gets killed by Jeremy Irons (Damage?), and that was shit.

diddl · 26/07/2010 09:44

I thought the guy playing SH was great.

But I didn´t understand why he didn´t figure out it was a cabbie sooner.

DinahRod · 26/07/2010 10:01

Poshwellies, Mycroft, the one who 'is' the govt, who meets in abandoned industrial units at night, is Sherlock's brother, supposedly equally, if not more, brilliant.

Moriarty is his arch enemy, yet to be revealed...wonders if they'll go over the Reichenbach Falls together.

DinahRod · 26/07/2010 10:02

Think the plot was secondary, it was all about establishing character.

Raahh · 26/07/2010 10:08

I really liked the Benedict C as Sherlock- i remember him as Stephen hawking, he was great in that.

I am beginning to think that Mark Gatiss got into writing, just to keep himself in acting jobs. He always appears in the things he writes. But he does do creepy very well....

I watched something recently that used the cabbie as stalker plot- think it might have been Luther, so it flagged up quite soon. But DH and I really enjoyed it- it didn't take itself too seriously, and i can watch Martin Freeman in anything!

NoseyNooNoo · 26/07/2010 10:15

I thought it was fantastic - really stylish and Martin Freeman stole the show for me.

I love The Mentalist too but that has more to do with my crush on Simon Baker

marantha · 26/07/2010 10:24

They'll probably fall off the London Eye this time.
