How much is it reasonable to spend on wellies for a teenager?

My 13yo son needs new wellies, so I asked him to look for a pair himself as he have disliked every previous pair he have had. He found a pair he could potentially see himself wearing. "Hunter Original Tall". However, they’re quite expensive at £130.

Is it reasonable to put that much money on wellies considering that he disliked all his previous ones? (they were apparently "too embarrassing" despite being just plain green)

Or if we do end up buying these, would it be reasonable to make it a rule that he actually have to wear them when it’s wet outside to justify the price?

I'd try to keep it under £15, unless he's a hard-to-fit size or is using the wellies for a specialised activity such as a competitive sport where superior performance is critical.

What about muck boots instead?

I was going to say all the quad bike riding teenagers round here where Muck Boots but they are expensive also. You might find some that look similar for cheaper or maybe try Vinted.

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/09/2026 17:24

There are size 6 ones on Vinted for £50

HikingHippo · 27/09/2026 17:35

This is totally about him wanting the brand/look.

I think my decision would be based on what his attitude towards clothes etc was generally. Is this his equivalent of having the latest Nike trainers or North Face tracksuit? If hes otherwise pretty cheap to clothe and not running around in designer gear, and i could afford it, I probably would. If it was stretching the budget, maybe as a birthday/Christmas present.

Otherwise, could he use existing/start to earn pocket money and save up for them himself?

One of two things will happen - he will wear the until their demise, or he will realise that the 15 quid dunlops are far more practical and you can recoup some of the financial loss on Vinted.

Happyjoe · 27/09/2026 17:41

I would let him get his feet wet than buy those expensive wellies and have my 13 year old dictate to me that he only wants the pricey ones!

he's more often than not out on wet fields playing around with mopeds and quad bikes together with his friends

Do none of his friends come to your house? Are they riding quad bikes elsewhere? If you post a pic of the 'suitable' wellies, we might find cheaper alternatives. Another option is that he needs to do chores to pay for the expensive ones.

I've never really thought about what they're wearing, so don't take my word for it, but I would say his friends usually just wear some plain green or brown wellies. Anyways, I attached an image of the wellies my son wants

I don't know. He's usually not picky at all when it comes to clothes. It's just wellies (and rainwear) that he has had a negative attitude towards, saying they're "too embarrassing/childish". He's never shown any interest in brands either.

Little bit of everything to be honest as we live on a farm and it's usually very muddy and wet around here, and he's more often than not out on wet fields playing around with mopeds and quad bikes together with his friends

No definitely not then.

Wellies are crap - he needs proper waterproof boots, with ankle support and good grip.

I live on a farm and we only use wellies for very light jobs.

But you probably need to spend that sort of money.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 27/09/2026 18:04

If he’s in the fields or on quads etc it might be better to go for some rigger boots?
That’s what most round here wear.

SCassandra · 27/09/2026 18:08

Lifeislikeaboxofchocolate · 27/09/2026 17:17

What is he using them for?? I’ve had those wellies and they are very difficult to get on and off and not the easiest to walk in. Since then I’ve always bought short wellies.

Was it the height that made them difficult to get on and off? I can imagine they could potentially be awkward for him to use as he's still only 4'9 tall

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll ask him if he would be okay with those if I can find them for a reasonable price

Lots of the black hunter wellies on vinted think I would go for that when he will likely outgrow them by next winter

Yes the height/length of them. Bear is mind they are likely to be muddy and dirty too.

Sherararara · 27/09/2026 20:18

Sorry but if you live in a farm I would have presumed you had a pretty good grasp of the Wellie market.

NameChangeScot · 27/09/2026 20:19

If you can afford it I would get them. Sounds like he's going to use them. My teen ds would have no use for wellies, but I have spent similar amounts on golf shoes and football boots.

FunPreventionOfficer · 27/09/2026 20:23

Don’t let him discover Aigle wellies, Hunters used to be decent but they’re awful now.

PancakePatty · 27/09/2026 20:27

The thing is with hunter wellies is that they are just crap now. Definitely not worth the money. The soles are slippy and the rubber cracks far too easy causing leaks.
I would suggest a trip to local farm supplies, let him try a few pairs on.
I am a farmer and wear le chameau. I appreciate these are pricey but they are so comfortable and have lasted me years. I wear wellies everyday of life.
My nephew who is a teenager has a pair of le chameau and a pair of muck boot wellies for colder weather. The muck boots are rubber at the bottom with neoprene up the top of the boot, the neoprene is camouflage. I believe these are popular with young lads around here. Also rigger boot types like you would get from screwfix.
Vinted is your friend here, you should be able to pick up a bargain.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 27/09/2026 21:15

We also lived on a farm and I spent a lot more than that because they wore them everyday and really got the use out of them. I wouldn’t touch Hunters though. They are very poor nowadays. I’d go to your farming supplies and look there. Mine wore Dunlop Purofort which have come down in price now.https://dunlopboots-uk.com/collections/agriculture/products/purofort-thermo-full-safety-wellington-green?shem=aimgspe,

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 27/09/2026 21:26

I spent £30 on a pair of wellies for my son, from Sports Direct.

KittyStanton · 27/09/2026 21:32

Don’t live on a farm but live rurally. I’d say boys wear dealer boots or le chameu or very unnoticeable green wellies probably from mole valley.

The way I deal with these situations with my teens is I give what I’m willing to spend on a pair of wellies and they can chose to top up the rest to buy the item they want…

SCassandra · 27/09/2026 21:33

Dumb question. I have never bought something from Vinted. If we buy these tall hunter wellies on vinted, and it turns out that they're too tall for him (go up too high on his legs), can they be returned/refunded?

TK Maxx quite often have Hunter wellies and he’d fit in the ladies sizes.
