How much is it reasonable to spend on wellies for a teenager?

My 13yo son needs new wellies, so I asked him to look for a pair himself as he have disliked every previous pair he have had. He found a pair he could potentially see himself wearing. "Hunter Original Tall". However, they’re quite expensive at £130.

Is it reasonable to put that much money on wellies considering that he disliked all his previous ones? (they were apparently "too embarrassing" despite being just plain green)

Or if we do end up buying these, would it be reasonable to make it a rule that he actually have to wear them when it’s wet outside to justify the price?

What activities is he needing wellies for?

What does he need the wellies for?

Blarn · 27/09/2026 16:50

Do you live somewhere where wellies are worn a lot? I don't think I had any between about the age of 11- late 20s but i lived in a city and never wet to a festival. Walks were in hiking boots. If he has stopped growing and will actually use themspending a bit more on a good pair seems sensible.

That’s a ridiculous amount of money for wellies!! I’d look for some hunter dupes.

Smallpoxy · 27/09/2026 16:51

No way I would spend £130 on wellies for a 13 yo teenager.

I would ask him to go hunting again for a suggestion.

CrotchetyQuaver · 27/09/2026 16:53

I'd look on vinted and see if you can find some almost new in his size for a lot less...

It would depend on the purpose for me.
DH and DS both prefer waterproof walking boots for countryside or beach walks. DS has adidas terrex ones.

Little bit of everything to be honest as we live on a farm and it's usually very muddy and wet around here, and he's more often than not out on wet fields playing around with mopeds and quad bikes together with his friends

No chance! Unless he is doing some daily or 5x per week that requires wellies. Plenty of other nice wellies for half the price.

We live on a farm. And he have definitely not stopped growing as he's still only 4'9", although his shoe size is 5-6 depending on shoes

Waste of £ if he hasn't stopped growing.

What brand are all his friends wearing?

user293948849167 · 27/09/2026 17:14

That’s insane!
I just bought my DD £20 green dunlop ones (for mucking out horses)

Somersetbaker · 27/09/2026 17:14

If it's his money he can have what he likes, if it's your money, black safety wellies (steel toe cap and midsole protection) about £20 from Screwfix.

I found a shorter model from the same brand that was about half the price, but he didn't like them at all and was very clear that if he’s going to have wellies, it have to be the shiny model that goes all the way up to the knees...

You can't have all shiny things you want being 13 yo.

He's saying they don't wear wellies, but I personally find that statement questionable

What is he using them for?? I’ve had those wellies and they are very difficult to get on and off and not the easiest to walk in. Since then I’ve always bought short wellies.

On a farm? Whos he trying to impress ? What’s wrong with a pair of Dunlop?!

ReflectiveGilet · 27/09/2026 17:18

If he already has big feet and is inilelt to outgrow them it’s an investment but my hunters perished just like my joules cheaper ones

ReflectiveGilet · 27/09/2026 17:19

What about muck boots instead?

TidalShore · 27/09/2026 17:20

Are Hunter's still poor quality? I've been avoiding them for years. I've just spent £150 on a pair of wellies and I would consider that mid-range, but I wear mine everyday, all year round so cheap ones (and previously Hunters!) don't last 5 minutes.

Would be prefer something more like rigger boots?

Do none of his friends come to your house? Are they riding quad bikes elsewhere? If you post a pic of the 'suitable' wellies, we might find cheaper alternatives. Another option is that he needs to do chores to pay for the expensive ones.

Ineffable23 · 27/09/2026 17:22

Are you a 5/6 and would they fit you when he grew out of them? I think that's probably the only circumstance under which I might be persuaded to spend that much on wellies for someone whose feet haven't finished growing.

Still a fairly chunky amount of money for wellies but at least less than half the price:
