How much is it reasonable to spend on wellies for a teenager?

My 13yo son needs new wellies, so I asked him to look for a pair himself as he have disliked every previous pair he have had. He found a pair he could potentially see himself wearing. "Hunter Original Tall". However, they’re quite expensive at £130.

Is it reasonable to put that much money on wellies considering that he disliked all his previous ones? (they were apparently "too embarrassing" despite being just plain green)

Or if we do end up buying these, would it be reasonable to make it a rule that he actually have to wear them when it’s wet outside to justify the price?

Dumb question. I have never bought something from Vinted. If we buy these tall hunter wellies on vinted, and it turns out that they're too tall for him (go up too high on his legs), can they be returned/refunded?

No, but you could just relist them and sell them on.

If you can afford it I would get them. Sounds like he's going to use them. My teen ds would have no use for wellies, but I have spent similar amounts on golf shoes and football boots.

I can afford them, but it would be a massive waste of money if they just end up collecting dust like all his previous wellies. But on the other hand, he found this model himself and it's apparently the only model he would accept..

Hunter's are really crap quality.

For that kind of money I would buy a pair of Aigle Parcours or some Chamy's off vinted.

@SCassandra I think this is your DS's questionable fashion rite of passage 🥹

That said, if hes riding quad bikes and stuff, get him some proper boots (like rigger boots others have mentioned). Hunter wellies aren't exactly the safest for that, they can be quite slippery when wet.

I don't know. He's usually not picky at all when it comes to clothes. It's just wellies (and rainwear) that he has had a negative attitude towards, saying they're "too embarrassing/childish". He's never shown any interest in brands either.

In that case I'd buy the wellies. Some kids are always asking for branded stuff. If it's just wellies your son cares about, I'd breathe a sigh of relief and indulge him!

Branwellgirl · 28/09/2026 06:27

If he’s riding bikes and quads he should have something more substantial than wellies on in case of a get off / ankle injury.

What shoe size are you? I've just bought dd some decent wellies (only £50 mind!) As she's now size 5 so I can inherit then if her feet grow.

ConBatulations · 28/09/2026 07:03

Size 6 maybe too tall for him. Size 5 kids would be cheaper and shorter but outgrown sooner. Can you find a local supplier so he can try them on?

He's 5-6 depending on shoes. I'm usually size 5

No you can’t. That’s not how vinted works. You buy it. If you don’t like it you can relist it and sell it again.

Pasithean · 28/09/2026 13:43

Surely he can wear what he wants, wellies are not normal teenage boys wear unless they are hunting , shooting , fishing types. Wellies on mopeds etc are a no . They are dangerous as they can get caught on the bikes.

TunnocksOrDeath · 29/09/2026 16:41

I wouldn't buy wellies off Vinted. If someone's trying to palm-off a pair that had a leak round the weld on the sole there's no comeback.
TKMaxx usually have Hunters - I'd start there first, much easier to return if there's an issue, and still way cheaper than buying direct.

BestZebbie · 29/09/2026 21:51

I’m not sure how well the Hunter ones wear, also - I had a knee length shiny pair as office boots when I had to walk from the bus in the rain everyday and they fell apart much faster than shiny knee length non-leather office boots do.

Had him try original tall in both size 5 and 6. Both sizes were very tall on him. size 6 was otherwise perfect size wise, but they were tall enough to start rubbing around upper legs when he was sitting down, although he said he didn't mind that.
Tried to convince him to try some shorter hunters and some other wellies from a different brand, but he refused both. The tall (and expensive) hunters are still the only ones he'd be willing to wear
