How do you get a grumpy teen up for school in the morning

DS 15 is a nightmare in the mornings! He has to get up at 6.45 ish to be ready to leave at 7.30 to catch the bus to school. He struggles so much to wake up and get up, sleeps through alarms, including a vibrating wrist band, falls back to sleep etc. I am having to go in to him multiple times, which I don't have time for when also trying to get myself ready to leave for work. And of course it's all my fault if he's running late! I know the teenage brain isn't designed to wake that early but unless school start time changes to 10am he doesn't have much choice. Has anyone found a magic bullet to get a grumpy teen out of bed?

He needs a task with a deadline. You say you get up, shower, then wake him. Instead get up, wake him up, and he needs to have the kettle on and a teabag in the mug or breakfast on the go or something before you get downstairs. He can then have a small doze whilst you shower, and can push it to the extreme of waiting until you turn the shower off if he can peg it downstairs quickly, but he has to have it ready before you arrive in the kitchen. You can purposely vary your shower length to keep him on his toes.

Does he have his phone with him in his room at night. If so this needs to stop immediately. It will be making him go to sleep later and also if his phone isn’t in his room it gives him an incentive to get up and have to go and get it from downstairs.

He doesn’t get up, he doesn’t get his phone for the day. Simple. He’ll soon learn when he is alone in the house without his device.

You don’t say what time he goes to bed or what time he actually falls asleep. I suggest you start there. Do you shut off his wifi access after a certain time? If he is wide awake into the early hours of the morning then of course he can’t get up.

At 15 if he can’t get himself up in the morning, that’s his issue. If he misses the bus. That’s his issue. If he is late for school. That’s his issue.

He doesn’t wake up because he doesn’t have to, he has you to do that for him. So why would he bother?

You have to care less, so that he cares more.

Either that, or say that if you have to wake him up, then you will drive him into school with your dressing gown on and walk him to the front door.

Either way….he will stop sleeping in

I’m 47 and still struggle to get out of bed in the morning. My 15 yo wakes me up at 6:45 to sort the uniform while she showers, she’s out the door at 7:20. I’m so grateful she’s so brilliant at this. My son though is more like me. His school is closer, he gets up at 8am but only if I nag/get him up, he leaves 8:20.

Different strokes for different folks.

@BettyStogs wake him before you go in the shower, tell him he can sleep for 15 more minutes, then up!

Could you take him up coffee and breakfast? yes yes I know it's spoiling him, but if it worked then it might make the mornings less stressful for you!

Sounds exactly like my son who is almost 14. I have tried everything - early bed times, warm shower and hot chocolate before bed, no screen time after a certain time, nothing changes at all. He’s the same with alarms etc - sleeps through them all, even me ringing his phone at full volume - nothing. I literally have to shake him awake every single morning and then go back in multiple times because he’ll drift back off to sleep. I’ve just resigned myself to the fact that I’m going to have this struggle until he finishes school!
He assures me that he will get up more willingly when he has a job because he’ll actually be getting paid but I can’t see it myself!
