Anyone waiting for a provisional driving licence?

We sent our forms back in April and the tracking is still saying 'awaiting documents' - DS is 17 in July so I am really hoping it will be here in time!

Sorry posted too soon. You can play for car licence from 16yr 9 months as you think.

AdvancedHigher · 16/06/2021 20:24

We got the form and had passport photos done in town but then realised his passport had expired 3 days ago! Apparently we can use birth certificate and the letter giving his NI number. Need to sit down and see what I have to do next. Our DS is 17 and a half so we’re very tardy.

GettingTooOldForThis · 16/06/2021 21:09

You apply for the moped one and it automatically updates to a car one when they are 17.

We are also waiting and he needs to drive for apprenticeships he's applying for.

Same message as others but we sent the documents back and they could have used his passport too.

Sounds like they’re taking a while. DD wanted hers for when she starts uni in September as proof as ID. She has a new passport issued this year but they’ve still sent a letter saying they need a verified photo for the driving licence, so frustrating!

TeenMinusTests · 19/06/2021 16:57

Does the photo have to be verified by person of good-standing like the passport one?

dementedpixie · 19/06/2021 16:58

I provided a photo but didn't need it verified as the passport details had been given

PurrBox · 19/06/2021 16:59

My son got his licence 3 days after he applied for it!

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 19/06/2021 18:00

Ah I think DD’s misread the form then if the photo doesn’t need to be verified as she’s using a passport, that’ll speed things up a bit.

dementedpixie · 19/06/2021 18:09

There's a bit in the notes or on the form that says it doesn't need verified if you've given passport details too

TheScottishPlay · 19/06/2021 18:11

Yes! DS should have started lessons last week, but no sign yet of the licence sent away for in March.

Mmmmdanone · 20/06/2021 12:39

We sent dd's off beginning if may and this thread prompted me to check. The tracker says they haven't got the form back! So frustrating!

petitdonkey · 20/06/2021 13:46

I’ve sent the form back again (registered!!) so fingers crossed we might get lucky like some previous posters. Seems a lottery at the moment!! I have his first lesson booked for tenth July so we have three weeks!

@PurrBox - was that recently?

PurrBox · 20/06/2021 14:07

Yes! I was really surprised when his provisional licence arrived two days ago, after applying 5 days ago.

JustDanceAddict · 20/06/2021 14:50

Got son’s back in a few days. Did it all online - They just needed his passport details.
Still haven’t booked lessons though 😆

petitdonkey · 20/06/2021 16:22

Danceadduct- did you not have to send a passport photo too? We applied online and said they could use his passport to verify but they still sent a form to sign and required a photo.

Dd's was the same. I had to provide a photo too despite using the passport details. I didn't need the photo verified though.
stupidstupider · 20/06/2021 16:29

Applied online as soon as we could, got a letter back (late) wanting a photo within 21 days of letter date .....which gave us 2 days .... so we did photos and sent it back anyway, licence arrived 3 weeks after his birthday. CBT and tractor test now booked, although will probably cancel tractor test as wait time is insane - I suspect he'll be 17 before he gets a date. You have to apply and pay before finding out when it is.

AuntieStella · 20/06/2021 16:29

DC got theirs in about a week earlier this year. They used passport info, so no forms required - I think it takes much longer if you don't do it online with passport info.

Passport pic is gopping, so when it comes to change to full licence, we might do a paper form just to get a better one (unless passport is renewed first!)

petitdonkey · 20/06/2021 16:34

So strange- I did it online snd entered his passport details but then they sent a form requiring a signature and a photo… perhaps to do with the age of the passport photo??

LynetteScavo · 20/06/2021 19:26

I think it's to do with the age of the passport photo. I'm going to renew passport and then apply for provisional license to hopefully avoid the faff.

stupidstupider · 27/06/2021 21:56

Renewing passport first is a genius move - I wish I'd thought of that - his runs out later this year and it would've been cruel to make him use that photograph of a 9 year old on his driving licence for a year!

BigButtons · 27/06/2021 21:59

We sent the form in early may. Since her passport is out of date we had to do it the oldest fashioned way. I sent it tracked so I know they received it. Still nothing and I don’t know how to track the process as you can only do that with online applications.

WhatIsThisPlease · 27/06/2021 22:22

We did DS's in April. He'd just renewed his passport a few weeks earlier and we still had to send in a passport photo. It's way quicker to do it online - but I don't know how you can do it online without having to send photo and signed form!
His took just short of 6 weeks.

Same happened to my dd and her passport is only a year old.
