Do you allow your 12+ yo DS and DD to have their phones / devices in their rooms at night?

Do you allow your 13+ yo DS and DD to have their phones / devices in their rooms at night!

OP posts:
MyWhatICallNameChange · 08/01/2017 20:07

No, not at that age.

My 17yo does, I think he's old enough to sort himself out, though if he had problems with getting up for college I'd take it away.

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/01/2017 20:07

No ( much to DS's annoyance)

In fact I now remove 17 year olds devices at 10pm on week nights too as she was not managing her screen time at all well!!

Lilaclily · 08/01/2017 20:07

No

Because he'd be on it instead of sleeping and ergo do shit at school

TheMartiansAreInvadingUs · 08/01/2017 20:08

No, no telephone or any other electronic devices in the bedrooms.
Not at 12, NOT at 13.
This will only happen when I know for a fact
1- they won't be spending their days on it
2- I can fully trust re where they are going in the internet

This is standard advice anyway and the one they have heard at school re internet safety.

fuzzywuzzy · 08/01/2017 20:08

Yes DC aged 13 has her phone in her room, she uses it as an alarm and it does not have internet access on it, it's not a smartphone.

Alla smartphones, tablet type equipment is not allowed in bedrooms at night.

franke · 08/01/2017 20:08

12yo ds - no because he is too easily distracted and really needs his sleep. This will continue for the foreseeable
14yo dd - yes because she doesn't get distracted, makes sure she gets enough sleep and gets herself organised in a way that ds does not.

It's about personality, not age.

TheMartiansAreInvadingUs · 08/01/2017 20:09

user actually you do have a point there.
None of us have a telephone in our bedroom either....

Hooleywhipper · 08/01/2017 20:09

Not until mine were 16,then I did.

sometimesKit · 08/01/2017 20:09

No, my 12 year old isn't allowed to. He's happy with that rule too Wink

ghostspirit · 08/01/2017 20:09

Yes. But he's never been ott with his phone. He's 14 now though. And normally asleep by 9.30 10 very latest.

Ilovecaindingle · 08/01/2017 20:11

13yo no
15 yo yes
13 yo doesn't know how important sleep is atm
15 yo goes to bed at 9 to face time 'the lass' and is asleep by ten!

Kim82 · 08/01/2017 20:11

No, 12 year old and 15 year old being theirs downstairs before they go to bed. No electronics allowed in bedrooms overnight.

Hulababy · 08/01/2017 20:11

14y dd's charger is in her room but it is at the other side of the room, and her phone and/or iPad have to be plugged in there, set to silent ( no vibrate) and Do Not Disturb overnight, and laid on the side table. They're not allowed to be left on the chair and not on/near the bed - fire risk.

Although it's now in her room - it wasn't until this year and only as she has proved she doesn't/won't use it overnight - it's not in reaching distance. And I reserve the right to have it removed if she is found to have used it. It charges there for practical reasons.

Chasingsquirrels · 08/01/2017 20:12

14yo ds - no

beeny · 08/01/2017 20:14

no

RosesShouldBeInTins · 08/01/2017 20:14

Nope - phones and iPads charge downstairs at night,

KickAssAngel · 08/01/2017 20:14

DD is 13. No screens after 9 pm. No electronics in her room at all at any time of day or night.

I still check her email/browsing history etc as well, although not often.

abbsisspartacus · 08/01/2017 20:14

Yes to her phone now she is 16 she used it for the alarm I can't guarantee she doesn't chat all night with her friends but I can guarantee she gets up on time so she doesnt do it often no laptops or tv's are in there rooms

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/01/2017 20:15

Ds is 15 and absolutely not!

dotdash · 08/01/2017 20:15

Yes. 14 yr old DS. But if the attitude continues I will be keeping in my room overnight!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/01/2017 20:16

No.

Ds aged 16 isn't allowed his on a school night either (may change this shortly when he's 17)

roundandroundthehouses · 08/01/2017 20:16

15 yr old - no, except weekends and school holidays.

Other dd is now 18. I started allowing her to have her phone at night when she started 6th form (at 17). By that time she had shown me that I could trust her, and it was time that she learned to regulate her own usage.

NotThrowAwayMyShot · 08/01/2017 20:16

No to 12 year old DS & also no to 15 year old dd.

Phones handed in to me at 9pm.

Lilaclily · 08/01/2017 20:17

I'm impressed at all of you with dcs you trust not to be on it at night !

petitdonkey · 08/01/2017 20:17

12yr old DS - no screens upstairs and that is how I intend it to stay. No TVs in bedrooms either. (Which he thinks is desperately unfair!!)
