I’m getting my forearm blacked out tomorrow!

That’s it really! It’s currently a jumbled mess of a snake/ roses/ leaves but there’s no colour so it’s hard to distinguish what’s going on and I’ve never really liked it so I’m getting the whole arm between elbow and hand blacked out.

never had black out before, has anyone else? Seen it on other people (mostly cool guys in bands tho 😂)

It’s gonna be a 4 hour session 😬

It’s never too late.

Being in your thirties mean you know what career path you’re on and what might hold you back, and what won’t. You’ll have more disposable income than when you were 18 so you’ll be able to afford to go to a great artist and get incredible work. You’re also aware of what a “bad tattoo” vs a “good tattoo” is and not go to someone down the road who is available the next day just because you’re impulsive and want a tattoo done that week.

You have wisdom on your side and by now you’ll be very self assured in terms of who you are as a person.

Definitely don’t think you’re too old. In a lot of ways you’re at the perfect age to start.

Ironically, it was having a client facing corporate job that deterred me for years. Five years later I work in a plant environment and site manager has a visible neck tattoo. 😂 It's weird how professional environments pay lip service to 'inclusivity/diversity' but are actually pretty intolerant when it comes down to it.

Absolutely not too late, I’m 32!

Got my first at 40, Having another on Monday, Never too late if it's what you want!

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 11/02/2023 18:27

The late, great Isobel Varley got her first tattoo at the age of 49.

Not suggesting any Mumsnetters get a collage of penises (penii?) on their foreheads, mind you!

toomuchlaundry · 11/02/2023 18:39

in an article about Isobel Varley it states her husband said she was like an addict when it came to tattoos as they were like a drug to her. Is that something to admire?

It's surely better to be obsessive about a hobby than about drugs. Pretty sure it was just intended as an example though.

toomuchlaundry · 11/02/2023 18:47

Don’t think it’s good to be obsessive about anything

PeanutButterSmoothie · 11/02/2023 18:48

I'm obsessive about the gym. I need to be or I'd find excuses not to go.

Yo! 4 hours later and it’s not quite finished but I’m loving it! The skull showing through is obv intentional because that’s the only part of my previous tatt that I liked.

This has really divided opinion it seems on here so interested to see what you all think…😆

Going back in a month once healed to have it finished (near my elbow)

It looks like you had Dead Sea mud on your arm 🤷🏻‍♀️ but if you like it that's all that matters !

What does admiration have to do with anything?

Isobel was an older woman living her own life, she wasn’t going into schools to promote tattoo collecting to kiddies.

Is there a need, really?

I hate comments like these. The whole say something shitty and rude followed up with a spineless “but if you like it that’s all that matters”.

Yes, if OP likes it, it is all that matters. That should be completely obvious from the get go. No one asked or needed your opinion on what it supposedly looks like. Never once did OP ask “what do you think my tattoo looks like?”

It’s your choice if it’s not to your taste or not. I can guarantee that the clothes you wear and your hair style certainly won’t be to my taste. But there is no need to say such shitty things to someone who is living their life, doing something for them that hurts and affects no one else.

You, like a lot of posters on this thread need to learn how to do better.

How many hours did it take you to come up with that? Or did Google help?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/02/2023 19:40

SirChenjins · 11/02/2023 17:33

So no designs, just messy lines as the OP has clarified. Not my taste as it looks unfinished and amateurish imo - I like the ones with integrated designs which are more like good works of art - but also not my arm obvs.

Apart from the blatant skull you can see in the picture

On the underside of her arm - which isn’t going to be on display as often as her forearm which is what I meant. Her forearm is just all black - no work of art there.

Oh right, because all black can't be art. Wonder if anyone told Kazimir Malevich in 1915?
Worked for him, his paintings are in the Tate amongst other galleries and worth millions.

But hey, what do we know @SirChenjins? All black = no work of art. Got it. On to the Tate as I type...

I’m getting my forearm blacked out tomorrow!

It's incredibly restrictive to live your life with this level of 'what ifs'

The OP might not even live until 90 (sorry OP) but she's expected to make all her decisions on the basis that when she is 90 she might not like the same things any more?

To me, this is on the same level as plastic surgery, not a random what if. Other people don’t agree, that’s fine.

TimeToFlyNow · 11/02/2023 20:18

Fucking hell, got to love it when the tattoo topic goes into trending. Same tired bullshit comments every time

Between the chav/criminal/sailor ones, and the people who pretend they are too stupid to understand that different people like different things. It's always a laugh

Bet there's some self harm post lurking about as well

But that wasn't the point you made and that I was responding to.

I would obviously have responded differently had you spoken about the dangers of tattoos (very tiny tbh) as opposed to just saying 'but what if you don't like it when you are 90' which is a ridiculous reason not to do anything

AdobeWanKenobi · 11/02/2023 20:30

Always thought Tim Commerford from Rage looked hot with his blackwork as well ❤️

Tattoos are pretty much part of modern culture nowadays. It's always the same old middle aged Karens moaning about them lol.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 11/02/2023 20:48

It’s much, much safer. The ink just sits in the middle layer of the skin, whereas cosmetic surgery has all the anaesthetic risk, plus risks associated with the limited life span of any implants used. Obvs surgical wounds are much deeper too, tattoos bleed but it’s more like a graze than a cut.

Tattoos have been around for at least 2500 years so there must be some sort of deep seated human impetus towards pattern making on skin that has nothing to do with the modern world.

It’s fine to not like them (if everybody likes them they wouldn’t be so appealing!)but the comparison to cosmetic surgery doesn’t really stack up.
