I've just found a bat in my kitchen sink. What do I do with it?

Confused Luckily it was in a colander so I placed a book over the top and have put it outside, but it's still int he colander. It's fairly small, would fit into the palm of my hand, and fury so I'm not sure if it's a baby (or how it got in). I haven't touched it. HELP!

There was another one in the bath. It could have been the one which we lost in the kitchen (bathroom is above the kitchen), or then again... Confused I followed the handler's instructions; gave it some water and took it outside. It didn't actually fly though, it crawled up the tree (so their home could be there?). Do you think this was OK?

Hi everyone, we've had a request to move this to a more permanent home (much like the bats have been!) as it may prove useful to other Mumsnetters who have had bat encounters. We're going to move it to 'Super Furry Animals' under Pets, as that seems to be the most suitable slot for it!

Best

Goodness. Well, we were on our way out to the cinema (to watch Batman!) when I went to put some washing in the machine, and there was 'mum'. I gently took her outside and gave her a drink, when I noticed that she was covering a smaller bat. The small bat was weak though, and had a couple of red moving spots on him/her. I gave both a little drink and 'mum' crawled off towards an old log at the end of the wall. She was full of energy. The smaller one took a little time, he/she lay on the wall for a while, and eventually flew off (yay). I looked down on the ground to see yet another baby bat! I'm sure I've moved into a bat cave! Anyway, it was uncovered and in the sun. It wasn't moving at first so I thought it was dead Sad After about 5 seconds it started to move, but really slowly. I gave it a drink, which seemed to perk it up a little. He/she didn't want to fly away though. It was getting a bit hot, so I brought him inside and put him inside the box with a drink. I took ds to watch Batman (seriously! Blush), came home and the baby bat was crashing around inside the box. I took him back outside but the darn thing just lay on the wall. After 15 mins I moved him to a tree at the bottom of the garden and he's crawling around now. I called the bat handler this afternoon, and she said it was OK, I was doing a brilliant job and sometimes it's best to do this, nature should take its course. I do feel terrible though. Sad

Well done Sybile. Smile

We have bats in summer - used to just roost under our soffits but last time DH was in the loft he found a little pile of bat-poo (we examined it under the microscope, full of insecty bits, def not mouse) so looks like they've moved in. If they start breeding there I'll know now who to ask for advice on stray babies!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 20:27

Wow, it's all go with you!

I wonder what happened to disturb them all? It sounds as if they've been disturbed from wherever they were nesting (roosting? Dunno the correct term).

HermioneE · 27/07/2012 20:28

You are going to have to NC to Batwoman Grin

LadySybildeChocolate · 27/07/2012 20:34

SybilDeBat? Grin

It's getting ridiculous now. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mark them in some way so I can see if they are the same ones, I guess not. Do you know when they will stop turning up? I do like them, I'm not really a pet person though.

The bat handler said it's just that time of year. The little babies are starting to become more independent so are leaving the nesty thing. She said a lot of them die as they don't have the ability to survive outside yet. The tiny ones need a special sort of milk, but once you start to hand rear them you're pretty much stuck with them for about 16 years. Shock

I once stayed in a holiday rental property that had bats flying round the bedroom. A large one roosted up just above the bathroom door. They somehow found their way in through cracks in the walls and seemed to be taking over the upstairs. We could hear them squabbling, and In the day you could see one hanging from the beams. My Dog was somewhat surprised!

LadySybildeChocolate · 27/07/2012 23:36

So far I've only found them inside the bath, and in the kitchen (I think the one outside was Bob, the one the handler set free). The kitchen is below the bathroom. I'm just not sure how they are getting in. There is a hole in the bathroom ceiling though. It's all confusing. We've only been living here for 7 weeks.

I'm so impressed at your bat care skills :)

giraffesCantTakePartInThe100ms · 28/07/2012 00:53

You are making this up aren't you? Being paid by the bat man film people to use the word BAT as many times as possible on a site so it seeps in to our minds and makes us want to go and see it! Wink

LadySybildeChocolate · 28/07/2012 11:04

Thank you, Sl1nky. Smile I just hope they are OK (and they keep out of the house).

Nope, afraid not, giraffes. I have another couple of pictures on my phone that I'll upload later. I haven't found any more today, yet.

LadySybildeChocolate · 29/07/2012 01:13

Smile Not tonight. I think they must be visiting someone else.
