I've just found a bat in my kitchen sink. What do I do with it?

Confused Luckily it was in a colander so I placed a book over the top and have put it outside, but it's still int he colander. It's fairly small, would fit into the palm of my hand, and fury so I'm not sure if it's a baby (or how it got in). I haven't touched it. HELP!

EugenesAxe · 25/07/2012 11:05

I was going to say give it a little stroke as they are adorable; maybe the rabies thing is more important though.

In terms of saving its life I don't know... I hope you got some advice and that it's OK now.

BCBG · 25/07/2012 11:07

You deffo need your local bat rescue person asap! It sounds as though above your kitchen window or door is a roost and these are young pipistrelles - they quite often fall from the roost and a bat conservancy person will ,ocate the nest and try and gently replace the babies. If you have two already I would get specialist help. There's no charge, but because of the heat you need someone to respond as soon as possible. HTH

Ormiriathomimus · 25/07/2012 11:07

No kingbeat, you aren't! Grin

StrandedBear · 25/07/2012 11:08

does the rescuer look like this?

PuddingsAndPies · 25/07/2012 11:08

kingbeat Grin

OldGreyWiffleTest · 25/07/2012 11:09

They should be ok in together - after all, they roost together.

strawberrypenguin · 25/07/2012 11:09

Sounds like you a roost very nearby. You could become the local bat lady! :o hope you manage to find someone to help soon (and yes I would use a different box) quite Envy of your bats.

LegoAcupuncture · 25/07/2012 11:16

Can you check your loft, see if there is a nest there? Do bats nest? Perhaps they are the babies learning to fly for the first time?

Envy at you having bats.

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/07/2012 11:18

I can't reach inside the loft, the ceiling is far too high and I don't have a ladder. I've only lived here for 6 weeks {sobs}

Ok, I managed to get in touch with someone from the bat conservation trust. He's trying to find someone local, and is going to call me back.

There's a bat in your kitchen? What are you going to do?

Holy winged-rodents. Phone the Batline.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/07/2012 11:25

Oh, wow, I love bats! Am very jealous. I hope your bat conservation man sorts him out, poor little thing.

I've only once lived somewhere where there weren't bats nearby - for a year - and I missed them! I love the patterns when they fly.

HazeltheMcWitch · 25/07/2012 11:31

I am very jealous also. And LadySybil , you are very nice for looking after them.

Hope Batman (or Batwoman) gets to you soon to take care of the little chaps, and hope the rest of the bats that you see are hale and hearty, circling happily outside.

loopylou6 · 25/07/2012 11:35

Omg, they're going to take over your house < helpful >

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/07/2012 11:36

I couldn't harm them, they are tiny, but bats are not in the tenancy agreement. :( The bat conservation trust has said to leave the one on the kitchen door. Confused
