Confused Luckily it was in a colander so I placed a book over the top and have put it outside, but it's still int he colander. It's fairly small, would fit into the palm of my hand, and fury so I'm not sure if it's a baby (or how it got in). I haven't touched it. HELP!

Bats are lovely, am very Envy of you. I love watching them swooping about at dusk when we are at the in-laws.

oopslateagain · 25/07/2012 12:01

They are adorable!

(I like bats)

Macchiato · 25/07/2012 12:06

Stranded, that's the weirdest shit I've ever seen Hmm

TheBigJessie · 25/07/2012 12:07

I'm making pathetic little aw noises.

Salmotrutta · 25/07/2012 12:19

Yes, bats are cute (well, not all of them) etc. but just to nag again - be very careful not to get bitten.

A small percentage of UK bats are infected with rabies and we had a conservation worker up here in Scotland who died of rabies after being bitten.

He had refused the immunisations offered to all the conservationists, got bitten, didn't seek medical attention and by the time he was diagnosed it was too late to vaccinate and he died.

And if they are in the loft you have to live with them and the smell of the bat shit (had a relative who was stuck with them and her loft stank).

And you can be fined £1,000 per bat if you kill them - also had a case up here of a man who was at his wit's end with bats in his loft and took matters into his own hands. Sad

... obviously I know you don't want to harm the bats but it was an interesting story at the time and the court case was reported in the papers.

Alameda · 25/07/2012 12:21

oooooooh they are real! you are so lucky

when is bat handler coming?

Salmotrutta · 25/07/2012 12:22

If I remember correctly you can seal off the nest once all the young have matured and left home because then the adult bats leave too? I may be wrong Confused

... but the conservation folk will keep you right.

PassTheBaileys · 25/07/2012 12:22

Ooh little bat I could live with! That one sitting on the kitchen door no way! I hate anything that flys!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/07/2012 12:23

Oh, they are so cute! Lovely pics.

Btw, I'm excited you're writing children's books ... you must let us know when they're out (or are they out already?).

UnChartered · 25/07/2012 12:25

just in case the bat-man Grin hasn't said, as well as being carriers of disease, they are also susceptible to human germs so try not to touch the bats at all, you need a licence to handle them and some thick gloves as their teefs are vair vair sharp

this is when i miss my old house, we had bats some people say i still do have them in my own personal bellfry

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/07/2012 12:28

I have a few with publishers, LRD and am waiting for them to say yes/no. One's about a witch, which is ironic. Grin

I wouldn't kill them, that's horrid. Sad I've no idea how they have got in, I've found 2 droppings in the kitchen this morning but nothing before. I really don't know what to do with the one on the kitchen door. I'm not touching them though.

OP posts:
LadySybildeChocolate · 25/07/2012 12:30

Thank you, I've not touched them. The little one looks so weak though. How can you tell if it's still alive? Sad

OP posts:
UnChartered · 25/07/2012 12:32

do you have a cat? got any wet cat/dog food in with it?

have you given it any water?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/07/2012 12:33

Ooh, I hope they say yes soon! I would love to have that sort of talent.

Can you blow on the little one? It should feel the air move, and move? I hope it's not dead ... but if you are right the big one is the mother, it must be in a bad way, I think, or she would not be there.

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/07/2012 12:38

No, I'm allergic. I've given the tiny one some water in a bottle cap, there's still some in there. There's not a lot I can do with the large one as it's on the door still.

I don't have talent, I'm just very silly. I've tried moving the sock it's on, it doesn't budge. The bat people said I wouldn't see it breathing as it's so small. Sad I hope I'm taking care of it properly for her.

OP posts:
UnChartered · 25/07/2012 12:39

how about dropping water onto the sock, the bat might be able to lick it up?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/07/2012 12:42

Oh - they don't like to move. We had them in our loft. They really do prefer to stay very still, so don't worry about it not wanting to move.

(And it is a talent to be able to write, you daft woman! Wink)

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 25/07/2012 12:43

I found a bat outside my back door. It was a while ago now. I thought it was dead but when I picked it up I noticed it was breathing so I put it in a shoe box in the airing cupboard and phoned The Batman.

Batman arrived about and hour later to find me frantically searching for bat which had escaped from it's shoe box and was loose in the airing cupboard. Needless to say airing cupboard was full so there were piles of underwear and other sundries all over the floor Blush

We did find the bat tucked into a corner and Batman examined her. Cue lots of squeaking (the bat not the Batman). Then he tried to release her but she flopped onto the ground so he popped her into a little bat bag and took her back to the batcave in his batmobile (blue van)

I never found out what happened to her but Batman said she looked fine and was probably just a young bat and was tired, so I presume she was released after a couple of days rest.

I hope your bat get rescued soon and don't lose it amongst your knickers as it can be rather embarrassing!

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/07/2012 12:45

The cap is really close to him, UnChartered. Smile I could pop and get some dog food if that will help??

They are both very still. I just hope the bad person comes before nightfall.

I don't really see it as a talent, I've always been able to string a sentence together. It's just fun to write about snot flicking ogres and witches. Grin

HazeltheMcWitch · 25/07/2012 12:46

Oh, the pics are lovely. The bats and the humans!
Hope still bat is ok.

UnChartered · 25/07/2012 12:48
