Am I the only woman left in Britain who doesn't buy thongs?

POLL: What shape pants do you prefer wearing?

  1. Granny style tents
  2. Boy style "shorts"
  3. Ordinary knickers
  4. Thongs
  5. None

Do you ever have moments when you realise that you are hopelessly out of touch with the rest of the culture? I went to buy some nice new knickers... I'm having trouble, everywhere has a huge thong selection, plus "boy-style shorts". But there's very little that's tasteful & feminine in an old-fashioned knicker shape! Am I the only non-pensioner woman who still doesn't wear thongs?

2 defo. Used to be thongs, but they've been relegated to the bedroom now 2 is trendy and there are loads everywhere. They are so comfy!

Cam · 24/05/2005 17:22

I've never worn them, just know they'd be like dental floss.
Did buy a pair by mistake when I bought a few pairs of lovely normal knicks in M&S - gave them to dh to return

lockets - lol at harvest pants!!!!!
Thongs are of the devil, (IMO!) give me a nice pair of hipster shorts any day, but must be matching at least the colour of bra I'm wearing

nikkisherri · 24/05/2005 18:07

After years of wearing thongs because dh loves me in them and always says things to me like 'what the hell are those big pant things you are wearing' (when im wearing bikini knickers)
I thought I might adjust to the uncomfortability factor of them but years on still have not and I do feel I am wearing properly (didnt realise they came with an instruction manual) and my ass isnt oversized for those explaining this as the reason.

I do agree that it just isnt right the natural instinct is to pull it out.

I do hanker for 'normal knickers' cant wait for the time of the month so I can get thse big knickers out

Cam · 24/05/2005 22:41

All these stories of dh's liking them, how about asking dh's to wear them and find out for themselves?

wordgirl · 24/05/2005 22:43

Cam, I did that! Unfortunately it backfired somewhat when he told me he found it quite comfortable!

ghosty · 25/05/2005 02:55

I am wetting myself at this thread ....

Thongs where I live are Flip Flops ...

I am a G-String girl ... and love the boy shorts ... they were invented for me ... I hate normal knickers ... hate VPL ..

Cam · 25/05/2005 08:39

I don't find VPL a problem if your knickers fit properly (ie not too tight)

desperatehousewife · 25/05/2005 08:45

I think they are an acquired taste - a bit like avacado and olives....it's uncomfy for the first couple of times then you can't possibly look back. Nearly died having to wear big pants after C-section....

LottieG · 25/05/2005 08:46

I was in a band, in my youth, called VPL!

I love G strings, only wore normal pants during pregnancy....

Ellbell · 25/05/2005 09:31

Comment overheard by my dh:

'I paid five quid for these knickers and three quid of it's up me arse'

I am a 'normal knicker' fan, btw, though swore by my huge granny knicks after my c-section! Made dh go to M&S to choose them as I was in hospital... poor man!

slartibardfast · 25/05/2005 09:32

ooooh!

PinkFluffPudding · 25/05/2005 09:48

Thongs are for me, without a doubt. Have worn them now for 10 years since starting Uni and have never looked back. I really don;t get how they could be uncomfortable - or why you'd want to keep pulling them out of your arse. If they're the right size for you you'd hardly know you were wearing any.

Even normal knicks feel like nappies to me and i hate VPLs under tight jeans.

PinkFluffPudding · 25/05/2005 09:50

The only downside has been the one or two occasions where I've put them on in a hurry/got dressed in the dark (!) and put them on wrong - with the crotch along my hip and a side bit going between my legs, IYKWIM!

CarolinaMoon · 25/05/2005 09:54

i used to wear thongs till my c-section. i've now grown so attached to my titty-warmer granny pants that i actually prefer them .

perhaps because i now have a nice little overhang that flops over the top of thongs...

beatie · 25/05/2005 10:04

I wear them with outfits that require them but would never wear them with jeans - as I see so many women do.

I'm probably the only woman who had VPL on her wedding day I thought the fabric of the dress was thick enough to get away with comfortable undies. Maybe it was just the light of the hotel toilet, because I only noticed at 10pm but it was still a devastating revelation.

Stilltrue · 25/05/2005 12:03

M&S side seam free high legs mostly; and sometimes their "boy shorts".

cant stand knickers of any sort. only wear mands high legs when i have to coz wearing trousers jeans. prefer to go without.
sounds sexy, but isnt. as dont wear sexy clothes...

sarah259 · 25/05/2005 12:45

I hate thongs! There's something very unhygenic about them. Big 'nics' all the time (by which I mean mini briefs....I think). I do own some though - for those outfits where you just 'have to'...VPL!!!! Are there specific brand names that are better than others? Any suggestions and I might, just might try again!

thongs, strings and french knickers for me!

or occasionally none - not when wearing jeans though

Listmaker · 25/05/2005 13:53

I have a HUGE arse and am 40 but i wear thongs all the time with trousers and they are really comfortable - honest! You get used to them. I found knickers went up the crack anyway and that's much worse!! Thongs are great!! VPL is YUK and make your arse look bigger!

upyourbumcheeks · 25/05/2005 13:54

I have a wide pear-shaped bottom, and from my early teenage years I found that normal knickers used to creep up (you know what I mean), and then have to be yanked back down again when noone was looking (hugely undignified and darned uncomfortable).I tried all sorts of makes and styles but they all ended squashed up between my butt cheeks. G-strings were a complete revelation. Why have half an acre of material slowly creeping up all day, when you can just wear a g-string and be done with it. I now don't wear anything else (except for huge elasticated magic pants, if an outfit is quite tight-fitting and I need a smooth line without any wobble).
