Why is it such a sin to wear black boots with jeans?

And what should I wear instead?

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 19/04/2009 19:19

talking black low heel boot with blue bootleg or worse tapered leg jeans. yuk yuk yuk. make it worse by wearing a black t shirt tucked into your mom jeans and add a friggin belt, cinch it in...bleurghhhhh.

KingCanuteIAm · 19/04/2009 19:33

Lol, this is exactly why I don't get on very well with Mums in the playground. The very thought that a person would judge another person for wearing black boots and t-shirt with blue jeans

I mean, really, do you not have a life to be getting on with? There are so many more important things!

ruddynorah · 19/04/2009 19:35

i can have an opinion on what a person is wearing. it is allowed. i have many friends who wear shit clothes. i don't expect they like what i wear either. desn't mean we don't like each other as people. no big deal.

Supercherry · 19/04/2009 19:41

Of course this is a trivial and non-important issue! It's in Style & Beauty- really what were you expecting?

hazeyjane · 19/04/2009 19:42

What!? i thought it was brown boots and jeans that were the no no!

LackaDAISYcal · 19/04/2009 19:43

well bugger me; I only ever buy black boots, and only ever wear blue jeans.

but then again I am 40

what a load of arsey wankerishness.

KingCanuteIAm · 19/04/2009 19:45

Ahh, I agree you can have an opinion, of course you can! It is more the over-reaction to something that is pretty meh really!

In fairness though I have little time for any of these kind of things, they are just not important for me or to me and I am aware that they are important to other people, it is just one of those things I don't get

LackaDAISYcal · 19/04/2009 19:46

so if you can't wear black boot, or brown boots with your jeans...wtf can you wear?

uggs?

Vamonos · 19/04/2009 19:50

Are black Crocs with blue jeans are out too then??? Say it isn't so.

Curiousmama · 19/04/2009 19:53

uggs!!! Hate them with a passion.

Black boots and jeans look ok although will be noticing this more now it's been pointed out to me. I wear short boots under my jeans, black and brown.

Supercherry · 19/04/2009 20:01

I wouldn't wear blue jeans and black ankle boots in the same way that I wouldn't wear mink tights with flat lace-up shoes like my lovely nan. It's no big deal, it's very unimportant in the grand scheme of things and saying it's a fashion faux pas is not being bitchy it's just stating a fact. I certainly wouldn't judge anyone by their clothes. I'm really no goddess of fashion myself, I am sitting here in my partners huge jumper, my old jeans and slippers- that's hardly fashionable now is it?

To answer the question wtf can one wear with jeans? Well, it depends on the jeans.

Baggy, boyfriend jeans= funky trainers/pumps or sandals, maybe even chunky boots like Wranglers or Timberlands.

Skinny jeans= calf length boots, uggs (though mumsnetters generally hate them!), heels. My sister's look nice with flip flops but I would look like a golf club.

Bootcut jeans, I am a lover of sandals or ballet slipper type pumps but you could wear high heeled brown boots if they were modern looking or like cowgirl boots maybe. Just not Clarks black ankle boots unless you don't mind committing a fashion faux pas.

CountessDracula · 19/04/2009 20:03

this is the very reason i only buy black jeans

KingCanuteIAm · 19/04/2009 20:07

But why is it a fashion faux pa? Who said so and on who's authority? This is what I don't understand about fashion, where do all these rules come from and why? Also would the rules stick if everyone just shrugged their shoulders and carried on regardless? (Genuine Q, I just don't get it)

LackaDAISYcal · 19/04/2009 20:08

PMSL...what a load of crap. I can wear what I like as I have the confidence to carry it off

but...high heels and jeans.....did my time with that particular combo in the 80s....never again!

janeite · 19/04/2009 20:08

This is the daftest style thread I've ever seen I think!

I often wear boots and jeans and especially like the look of brown boots with jeans. Although tbh I am coming to the opinion that I don't actually look very nice in jeans full stop.

Jeans and flip flops makes no sense at all to me: if it's warm enough to wear flipflops why would you be wearing jeans?

Jeans and wedges are a v good look. Not wedge boots though because they are a crime against good taste imho.

Clarks black ankle boots are probably not a good boot to be basing any fashion choices on though!

FigmentOfYourImagination · 19/04/2009 20:12

fusty middle aged ankle boots with bootcut jeans just looks frumpy, mumsy and makes legs look stumpy.

Supercherry · 19/04/2009 20:27

This is what I mean by skinnies and heels here

Not 80's but very now actually

the kate moss is no a faux pas. that's skinny jeans tucked into boots.

we are talking those naf clarks low heel type boots with normally a slightly duff blue jean in a boot cut.

pointydog · 19/04/2009 20:45

I've heard this before. But I have done it. I'd've thought the style of boot/shoe says more about lookin gmiddle aged than the colour.

But I am middle-aged, dammit

LackaDAISYcal · 19/04/2009 20:47

I'm sticking to the adage that if you can remember it the first time around you're too old to wear it when it comes round again supercherry....updated for the noughties or not

Black long boots with mid-dark wash skinnies: fine.

Black pointed, high heel patents with bootcut dark wash jeans: fine.

Mid heel, matt look boots like the ones featured above with any jeans esp. light wash, slightly too short in the leg jeans: nooooooo

GracieGrace · 19/04/2009 20:53

light wash SO IN atm

Supercherry · 19/04/2009 20:53

Topshop do some nice boots here

Think you could pull some of these off with jeans though I don't like all of them. I would go for brown- that's just me.
