Oil cleansing method

Thank you to the mumsnetter who mentionned this a few days ago! I looked it up and have done it a couple of times, and it is fantastic! It has made such an amazing difference to my skin in such a short time: it is much clearer, softer, with no dry patches, and some old stubborn blackheads are finally gone. And it is cheap! What's not to like!

For anyone interested more info here

This thread is typical of why I love MN so much - I've been feeling really down about my rubbish skin (am very prone to spots and my chin has been covered in painful deep spots for 6 weeks now, acne face treatments do nothing) and just skimmed half-heartedly looking for skin related topics and found this. Thought I'd give it a go and have done OCM using virgin coconut oil for only 2 nights so far, and it incredibly seems to be clearing up already!

It's still early days so I'm trying not to get too excited but there's no doubt my skin looks hugely improved in a very short space of time, so am going to carry on with it every night, and just use a wet flannel in the mornings.

Am so grateful to whoever started this thread (can't remember now!) for giving me an option beside horrible drying chemical treatments that just make the problem worse. Seems simple and natural is best after all!

mammya · 22/04/2009 14:18

It was me who started the thread, but it's Christiana that you should thank really, as she mentioned this method on another thread. It's fab isn't it?

Hi I decided to skip the castor last night, the facial hair thing kind of put me off.
I just did it with jojoba oil it seemed fine.
This morning, as usual, I just splashed my face with water and off I went to do the school runs!! Skin still not looking oily at 2.25 pm!!
Which is definately a first for me as normally, 2 hours after washing my face it looks like a mirror!!
Plus my skin looks wonderful and neat, fresh and everything! I'm so happy with this OCM.
A part from the pores which still look more open than before (I still don't know why, might be because I need to try a different oil), everything is PERFECT! I love it.
Shame I'm not brave enough to continue with the castor oil because I have the feeling it cleansed the skin better.

toffeeapple · 22/04/2009 14:31

Nappy - No sorry I meant to ask that question to Whoingodsname as she said that her hair had turned dry and wiry like mine. And in answer to your question, I can last 3 days before my hair becomes greasy, but I don't wash it I just use a dry shampoo on the roots and this way I can usually wait a whole week (Baptiste).

ProfYaffle · 22/04/2009 14:37

I tried castor oil last night for the first time and can't say I was impressed tbh. I mixed it probably 90-10 with olive oil. It's very thick and sticky and I didn't feel I'd managed to get it completely off my skin. After reading Nappy's post I think I'll stick to straight olive oil in future.

IrritableGrizzly · 22/04/2009 14:39

mammya thanks to both of you then!

It is fab isn't it - it just feels so nice doing the massage and steaming, like you can feel it working while you're doing it. I honestly didn't know what I was going to do, my skin had got so bad and the products I was using (Eucerin Dermopurifier ) had seemed to make it worse, and it's incredibly demoralising to reach 34 and have worse skin than my 17 yo niece.

I'm really into simple natural things anyway, so this method just makes total sense for me.

nappyaddict · 22/04/2009 15:51

mammy did you try using avocado oil on it's own? I found olive oil in it's own too drying but avocado on it's own has been ok so far.

toffee so if you washed your hair monday morning you would have to apply dry shampoo thursday morning?

I was thinking about washing my hair less often to see if it reduced the amount of oil produced on my scalp but if you go a whole week without washing it and it gets greasy in 3 days it probably won't work.

Kewcumber · 22/04/2009 16:37

profyaffle - do you mean you used 90 castor and 10 olive? If so thats the wrong way around, should be majority other oil minority caster oil

ProfYaffle · 22/04/2009 16:48

Lol, no Kew, it was 90% olive oil!

Kewcumber · 22/04/2009 17:20

w2as it extra virgin OO? That is thinner than ordinary OO

ProfYaffle · 22/04/2009 17:25

Extra virgin, yes. I've been using oo alone for a couple of weeks and found it fine, it was the addition of castor oil last night made it sticky.

mammya · 22/04/2009 17:50

Yes I agree ProfYaffle, castor oil makes the mixture very sticky and the procedure less pleasant.

Nappy, I didn't try avocado oil on its own but will give it a go, tonight perhaps. TBH I really like almond oil, it's got a nice texture and smell and seems to agree with my skin.

where can you but almond or jojoba oil from anyone? And is it ok just to use normal olive oil and maybe tea trea oil?

toffeeapple · 22/04/2009 21:03

this is where you can find Jojoba and almond oil.
I think it's ok to use olive oil on its own as long as it's extra virgin.
Tea tree oil I'm not sure.

mammya · 22/04/2009 21:09

Ooooh, look what I found! A bit pricey but it looks good, no? I can't believe I never noticed this (I have been using her hair products for years, they are fab).

I found my almond oil in a Turkish grocery shop.

toffee this looks like it would be good for your hair. anitagrant.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=23&catego ryid=3&option=comphpshop&Itemid=41

Emily3030 · 22/04/2009 22:03

You can get Almond oil in Sainsburys, too. Pharmacy section, ask behind the counter!

nappyaddict · 22/04/2009 22:06

I will have been doing this a week by tomorrow night. Noticed a big difference today, but I have also not been wearing any make up since Tuesday so I don't know if it's that that is making my skin feel less oily or the OCM.

mammya · 22/04/2009 22:10

toffee, I can vouch for the whipped butter that nappyaddict linked to, it is fabulous, I use it on my dd's very curly and dry hair. It doesn't make the hair greasy, just very soft and shiny, and it smell gorgeous too. It's also very good on dry skin patches.

Are the shampoo bars any good?

mammya · 22/04/2009 22:33

Yes, very good. Not for my hair mind, it made it greasy, but works fabulously on my dd's hair.

I am going to order this

In fact Anita Grant sells so many lovely-looking oils, I want to buy them all!

For those of you that were complaining of visible pores (sorry can't remember who), there are a couple of oils that seem promising. I'm not on commission I promise!

As I said I've been buying her hair care products for my dd but never really looked that closely at the skin care stuff until now.

nappyaddict · 22/04/2009 23:00

Think I'll pass on the shampoo bars then don't want to make it any more greasy. How often does yours go without getting greasy mammy?

mammya · 22/04/2009 23:32

nappy, my hair is not normally very greasy, but I wash it every other day as otherwise my scalp gets itchy. When I used the babassu shampoo bar regularly it did start to feel a bit greasy, although not hugely so. My scalp was less itchy though. Hmmm... thinking about it perhaps I should try using it again, but maybe not so often.

If your hair has a tendency to get greasy I wouldn't recommend it. On the other hand, my dd's hair is very dry and curly, and it does not strip it of all moisture like other shampoos and helps with the friz.
