WWW's 10 years older slipper camp for middle aged frumps

WideWebWitch · 19/10/2008 18:19

Hello everyone, old and new.

This is about feeling better about yourself and looking and feeling better etc. But mainly we chat and laugh quite a lot, which has all got to help towards happiness etc.

The rules (anyone can join):

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine or Champagne or whatever at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

Some people are doing India and Neris's Idiot Proof Diet (Atkins, more or less), others are doing Slimy World, others are just being as healthy as possible.

Welcome everyone, have a good week.

So, feeling grumpy today as dh stressed with exams (tomorrow and Tues) and he is being a TOTAL PITA about it. I drove my new commute with ex dh on Sat morning (was on way back from staying at his on Friday night) and omg, it's an hour and a half minimum each way. I am feeling v worried and don't want to start contract but dh is saying "do it til December and then leave if you don't want to carry on" - which is when we'll have £xxxk in the bank - whereas I want to not start it tbh. I think he would be ON HIS KNEES crying with tiredness had he done the work I've done in the past 3 years and I've totally had enough and am at the end of my tether.

Anyway, so have eaten loads, drunk loads, feel shite, am v bad example. but hey, you can all do better than me I'#m sure.

Sorry for whinging, please do ignore but it feels good to get it down and out of my head.

oh lol at sobernow, I feel like that, I know it's bad when I am regularly having fantasies about being ALONE in a bed like this.

welcome blackduck and JP, tis the time of year for it, do join, we're all being shite atm but hey, it's anice thread anyway

batters, sorry to hear about your dd, poor love.

OP posts:
JJ · 19/10/2008 19:13

Oh, now I feel I can join again, being very middle aged and frumpy at the moment. I was reading the previous thread last week whilst eating a cold piece of cake and thought how sad it was sitting there eating a cold piece of cake whilst reading about being healthy. So I turned off the computer, made some creme anglaise and ate all of it warm with more cake. Not exactly ideal. But tasty.

And I don't have slippers. I need to get some.

batters - poor you and your poor daughter! I hope she's on the mend.

WWW - sorry to hear about commute. No advice, will leave that to people more clued up about those things but huge huge sympathies. I couldn't do it, that's for sure.

JP - I just had roast and blackduck, I had potatoes with it. I need to cut back on my carbs as well. Maybe after the ice cream.

Sobernow - I love the dark and love it that the nights are finally getting longer. Yes, my bed is always without fail sometimes my favourite place to be.

LoveAndSqualor · 19/10/2008 19:20

hey there, just marking thread, back later properly. WWW, commute sounds like a nightmare - no advice, but sympathies. If it's really messing you up, don't do it (easy to say from this side of the computer, I realise). Batters, poor DD! Is she on the mend, then? SHe sounds wiped out. Blackduck, The Wire is also my undoing .

And JJ, LOL at the cake. That's the spirit!

And everyone needs slippers

Cammelia · 19/10/2008 19:50

Evening, girls, lovely to see you here again JJ, I have been thinking about you and wondering if you're alright.

Dd broke up for half-term on Friday, we have spent the weekend en famille walking around outside at Howletts zoo and Port Lympne. It was lovely and sunny on Saturday. Today at Port Lympne I swear there was a mumsnutter loudly questioning the cafe manager why there weren't more healthy options available, eg. freshly-squeezed apple juice, "as they do it so much better at Kew"

Was it someone even from this thread I wondered

Did a bootcamp meet-up ever get arranged for October and I wasn't invited

chutneymary · 19/10/2008 19:57

Poor DD, Batters, there's a lot of nasty viruses around here at the moment. Are you on half term yet? I hope that she turns the corner soon.

WWW, I would say don't do it, but obv you know your finances etc and I understand that needs must sometimes. Would it be disastrous moneywise to have a short while off? I recall that you were weighing up the pros and cons, and I just wonder if your sanity / emotional health would be improved by not embarking on something which looks like a hard slog before you have started. Only a week in the old place though, so that is something. Will be thinking of you.

L&S, good to see you, hope you and DS are recovering from your illnesses. How long til the move?

Hi, JJ, good to see you again. And welcome to the new people . I am a particularly poor bootcamper at the moment but enjoy reading of people's ventures into exercise and healthy eating. Enjoy others' tales of excess even more so bring them on.

Food - much. Wine - none. Exercise - hmm. Happiness - still worried for DD, not quite right yet after the pneumonia, but other than that OK. Only a handful of working days wil my mat leave starts - hurrah!

Happy week everyone.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/10/2008 20:13

Hope dd feels better after some tlc Batters. Poor thing.

Hello JP and BlackDuck and welcome back JJ. How's JJJnr?

Www - the commute sounds dreadful. I'd not do it TBH the run up to Christmad is stressful enough without that!

Reports re the Aldi cream are good so far. It's quite soft and nice to use. Not making me wrinkle-free but I'd need a facelift for that!

Have been to the gym and woohoo! no nose bleed. dh has gone to the Belfry to play golf this weekend and chill out in luxurious surroundings leaving me with the offspring , the cleaning and a pile of ironing. So in that sense I'm grumpy but I've had a nice soak and done all my lotions and potions and I've resisted the wine.

Have a nice week everyone. I'm on holiday for a week from Friday so on countdown.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/10/2008 20:15

Arf @ Christmad!

Too true!

KatieDD · 19/10/2008 21:21

Went out to a mexican restaurant on friday night with the girls, drank so much alcohol I can still taste it, so am back on the straight and narrow this week.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 19/10/2008 22:09

www the commute sounds very difficult, many sympathies. My DH's long and miserable commute from Brighton to London was one of the main reasons he couldn't hack the UK any more and we moved out to Australia. Maybe you could try that solution?!

Hello JollyPirate, enjoy your roast dinner, welcome to the thead.

Good luck on the no carbs BlackDuck.

Batters, your poor dd, how old is she? Tis miserable when the poor loves are ill.

Well done Saggars on the non-nose-bleed-trip-to-the-gym. Also how lovely for your dh to have w/end off in luxury (grrrrrrrr).

Cooler day here today, no longer 35 degrees unfortunately, but am still on juice diet so am being virtuous. Actually, if any of you want to lose weight rapidly and feel more energy and generally a whole lot healthier, I can really recommend it. It is a bit hard core and not easy I would have thought if you work away from home but it is pretty amazing.

Also there is loads of grim washing up to be done. Bloody juicer and blender. But if you can cope with that it's a good short term miracle worker.

eemie · 19/10/2008 22:57

Welcome Jolly pirate and Black duck.

Hi Sobernow, good to see you, sorry your dh can't say/do anything right. Does he still know the names of all the Fimbles?

L&S, hope you're feeling better.

Smbk - glad nose behaving itself.

ClaudiaSchiffer - do the bits of juicer go in the dishwasher? Or is that not practical?

Happier with things around here - feeling more affectionate towards rented house.

Puppy has suddenly come over all teenager, though. Deaf to instruction, pulling on lead fit to wrench arms out of sockets. Threatened to chop her up for cat food this morning (dd looked worried for a moment). Then took her to puppy class where she was such an angel the instructor couldn't see any problem. (Reminds me of dd, whenever I took her to the emergency doctor she immediately perked up & looked healthy).

Onward and upward, as someone said about three threads ago

eemie · 19/10/2008 22:59

Only after posting did I notice title of this thread.

Slipper camp, yes.

Middle-aged...

Frump...

Oh, all right then

tortoiseshellWasMusicaYearsAgo · 19/10/2008 23:09

Hello all, just marking the thread. We are all ill - just a cold - but have ringing in ears, am deaf, headaches/sore throats. But am going to see ds1 in an 'opera' tomorrow (very high brow!) - is a new community type opera.

Had lovely coffee with beety last week here which was very nice, but I'm sure not a slipper boot camp approved place!

unknownrebelbang · 20/10/2008 01:05

Marking the thread to confess all next weekend.

The theory is to do plenty of prampushing to give my friend a break/up the exercise and to eat healthily...hahahahahaha.

DS2 was 12 today, and he still gets excited, bless him.

Have just watched Dirty Dancing, and all is well with the world, if only temporarily.

(Poor DD, Batters, and poor Tortoises).

TheDuchessOfCorpseBride · 20/10/2008 12:21

Arr! to jollypirate and hello blackduck. WWW is right, we are being quite shite atm so please inspire us with your new enthusiasm.

disclaimer DoNB will contribute to this thread but doesn't own any slippers, am NOT frumpy and I'm only 39 which isn't anywhere near middle-aged (is it ?)!

Swam on Friday and will swim again tomorrow with DD2 as pre-school is on half-term - which I discovered at 9am this morning, along with a dozen other parents, all of us looking forlorn and not being able to get the doors open. Primary sch half-term is next week. [pulls a 'oh how ridiculous' face]

Saturday was DD1s gymnastics party which was a huge success and I did go on most of the gym equipment! I was so busy with all the organising etc that I only ate a very small smoked salmon & soft cheese roll all day. Had a handful of Hula Hoops when we got back but was beyond hunger by then so didn't have dinner either. Sunday ate sensibly.

I long for a free weekend but the birthday/Halloween/Fireworks/Christmas invites keep on coming. (for the children, I might add, DH & I aren't nearly as popular)!

Cammelia · 20/10/2008 14:28

Unfortunately I am a middle-aged frump.

I have never bought any slippers, however I do have a few pairs from hotels.

Of course I don't wear them - dd does occasionally.

WideWebWitch · 20/10/2008 15:26

I've turned down the contract and feel v v relieved. It would have been a long commute and I need a break more than I need the money.

Middle-aged windswept frump checking from NOT Boot-Camp approved lovely long weekend with friends in Edinburgh. Still here, still eating pavement-slab sized Brownies, will be back in loop and back at camp soon.
Love to all especially purseless, worried mothers with terminally irritating husbands XXX

duckyfuzz · 20/10/2008 18:08

just popping in to say well done to www for turning down contract, quality of of life so much more important than money. I have been following bootcamp antics but not joining in as have been so bad, put on 4lbs last week and drank for too much through combination of PMT, sister visiting, DH being a tosser and general life stress - but now its slipper camp, hurrah, i can do that

yoyo · 20/10/2008 18:09

Hello everyone. Have been trying hard to keep up but am finding it nigh on impossible to get on pooter, read posts and actually write anything when I am working.

Have been having many, many post-midnight bedtimes, crap with exercise, so-so with food, hands are like sandpaper as are legs (rather shockingly, could probably smooth the garden furniture by rolling over it a few times), alcohol still features too much, lots of water. Have been feeling happy though so managed one thing on the list. Am now on holiday for two weeks and as DH is away (again) am aiming to get back on track. Have been catching up with stuff today but tomorrow I am heading to the gym and will try to go every day until I go back to work.

I have no slippers either but am most definitely a frump.

Will now aim to keep up with everyone for the next fortnight and will try and look over the posts of the last couple of weeks unless there is anyone who can do a quick resume?

LoveAndSqualor · 20/10/2008 19:58

Right! I am disgrace today, but feel I must confess all. My father turned up today to help my sister and I with a combination of jobs (building shelves, putting stuff of mine into storage) (chutney, the big move is happening on Nov 8, but am as of now engaged in a series of mini-moves) (so I spent all of yesterday packing and sorting while ex-DP (erk again) took DS out, which was absolutely fucking GRIM ). Wow, long sentence . Anyway ... so my dad turned up. And he is a large, fat man whose impoverished Liverpool childhood has left him with a penchant for treats galore (hence fatness) and an inability to walk ANYWHERE. Not even to shops round a corner three minutes away. So he brought chocolates. And I ate them all afternoon. And I didn't have a proper lunch. And now i feel sick. And ds is STILL ill.

Meh. DP (I think i will continue calling him this until I move out) is out tonight, so I am going to eat soup and knit and forget about packing and watch America's Next Top Model, in a bid to remind myself that youth and beauty is no help in the charm and intelligence stakes (in which, of course, I excel ).

Marina, it is mandatory to eat enormous brownies in Edinburgh. Where they from Valvona and Crolla ?

WWW, good and brave decision re contract. Is DH behind you (metaphorically; I don't mean is he reading this over your shoulder)?

Batters, glad to hear DD is on the mend! Will mail you shortly.
