after reading a few threads on here its got me thinking,
if people can't stand to see other or children in certain clothes what do they think about non make up wearing women?

Yup, I wear suncream too.

Drink lots of water too keep your skin hydrated.

I feel good by the clothes I wear, and when I do wear make-up I feel even better, it makes it more of an event.

If I wore it all the time, I wouldn't know how to wear it differently in the evening to get a better effect. And I'd be afraid of looking "washed out" without.

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 01/08/2008 17:56

Malory, re your comment:
"nearly all the women i know who dont wear make up also dont seem to do much with their hair and wear clothes that mainy llok quite crap on them

to me it screams" i dont really care about myself,i spend all my time focussing on other people, i dont have much sefl confidnece, i dont want anyone to lolok at me in any way".

I would put myself in this category (quite happily). I don't wear make-up as I hate the feel of it, I do very little with my (rather wild) hair and I have no interest in clothes whatsoever. But I certainly don't spend my time focussing on other people and it doesn't mean I have no self-confidence - frankly, I have too much self-confidence. I expect people to take me as I am and be more interested in me, as an individual, rather than what I wear or what I look like!

I have no interest in other people's appearances so why would they be interested in mine?

pointydog · 01/08/2008 18:02

I don't really think anything of it.

Although, if I think hard about women who don't wear any make-up ever, I get an image of someone rather over-serious coming to mind.

edam · 01/08/2008 18:02

When I was very young, in one of my first interviews, the woman who offered me the job mentioned that I would be expected to wear make-up. I was too embarrassed on her behalf to point out I WAS wearing make up but was obviously far better at putting it on discreetly for a natural look than she was - looked like one of those women on make-up counters who have to go OTT.

pointydog · 01/08/2008 18:03

Women who wear a lot of make-up all teh time are also a littel odd and lacking in humour. I think.

edam · 01/08/2008 18:03

(And it was odd anyway as this wasn't a job on a make up counter... so I can't see why it would have been a requirement...)

pointydog · 01/08/2008 18:04

x-posting duel with edam

zippitippitoes · 01/08/2008 18:09

i agree that for lots of women it does make them look like dogs or much older

katebee · 01/08/2008 18:13

I only use facial moisturiser, sometimes lipstick and if I'm going out mascara too.

I have never used foundation etc..

I never really notice whether others are wearing make up or not unlesss it is really OTT which is offputting....especially if they have sickly perfume too - yuk!

I don't think most make up etc. is that good for ones skin as it is full of chemicals.

Does anyone else worry about the negative health effects f wearing make up?

The problem I'll have in a couple of years is whether to dye my hair as can't bear the thought of losing my blond locks..but don't like the idea of the hair colour chemicals or having to keep dyeing it.

pointydog · 01/08/2008 18:15

have never worried about health effects of make-up. Never knew there were any.

bundle · 01/08/2008 18:19

lol@ that woman edam!

i hardly ever wear make up but when i do i would normally use a little foundation to even out the blotchy bits on my face, some red or pinkish lipstick, perhaps mascara and even recently eyeliner (a metallic blue/green)

tbh my heart's not in it and I'm glad I'm not one of those people who feels she can't step outside the front door without full slap.

hecate is of course right about why we do it. and so engrained is it, that women now believe they are making valid choices about their apperance for themselves, but it's much more complex than that.

bundle · 01/08/2008 18:20

btw, just because i don't use make up it doesn't mean that I neglect my skin - I love skin products like moisturisers, exfoliators, cleansers etc

girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 18:33

I think that a lot of people have an odd idea of make up- I wear loads, but people always say to me "You don't use much make up do you?"- ( and they are not being sarcastic!

It's how it's applied that counts and the colours.

Make up does not equal blue eyeshadow, tons of blusher and false-eyelash effect with red lippy!

OrmIrian · 01/08/2008 20:18

Many years ago DH used to manage petrol stations and one on occasion I popped in to see him at lunch time. He grabbed my arm, dragged me into his office and whispered' She's here. You've got to have a look. It's the Mars woman'. 'Twas a female rep from Mars who appeared to have plucked every hair from her eyebrows and then painted them on again. It fascinated him. He said he couldn't focus on anything she was saying to him. The horror of that has sort of stayed with me and made me a bit scared of lots of make-up.

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 20:55

edam what sort of job was it? how the heck can wearing makeup be a requirement of the job?

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 01/08/2008 20:57

imagine that everyday having to draw your eyebrowns on !

Quattrocento · 01/08/2008 21:01

Yes but Malory you're very shallow.

I too spend a fortune on clothes ... and handbags and the number of shoes I have is OTT (inner shallow fashion bimbo) although some of them are dullish for work ... but I just don't do makeup.

lumpsdumps · 01/08/2008 21:21

It is a requirement of my job to wear make up. I work in a well known clothes shop and we have businesswear requirements and part of that is nails, make up, hair and clothes.

maidamess · 01/08/2008 21:24

lovelysongbird I draw my eyebrows on everyday. Well, not from scratch but to bulk out the wispy threads I have been 'blessed' with. I look like something from the X files if I dont (IMO before you all argue with me!)

REIDmylips · 01/08/2008 21:29

i have pretty crap skin and still dont wear make up, the only trouble is when i do wearit (to go out) i get paranoid thinking that i have way too much on - dh and friends assure me that dont, but i still feel like i have a layer of gunk on my face!

i am very jealous of peole who have the time and ability to apply make up correctly!

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 21:33

lumpsdumps is it next?

nails as well what do you have to do with them ? french polish?

maidamess, what happened do you overpluck or are you just v fair?

i think you get used to not having it on, then when you do it feels like you have something uncomfy on your face you want to wash off

OP posts:
lumpsdumps · 01/08/2008 21:36

No not Next, but it is still a very well known high street store, don't need to have french nails, but do need them in whatever is the latest trend.

OracleInaCoracle · 01/08/2008 21:40

i dont wear make up if i can help it. my skin is pretty good (unless i am on my period or pg) but i do have vv dark eye circles. however, if i wear make up i always feel overdone. a bit like a girls world (but without the extendable hair)
