after reading a few threads on here its got me thinking,
if people can't stand to see other or children in certain clothes what do they think about non make up wearing women?

OP posts:
Dilberta · 01/08/2008 09:49

I was a Greenham common woman too (well, was 17)

blueshoes · 01/08/2008 09:51

Never too late, Dilberta

The age depends a lot on the condition of your skin, its colour and how ropey (or not) it is. However, I will not wait until the onset of wrinkles - I would not put my faith in makeup to actually hide wrinkles beyond smoothening out the overall look.

I see women (particularly smokers) in their twenties who could do with help. Others might be able to wait till they are 30-40? But that is just to avoid looking like the dog's dinner - not saying you do.

Make up can be used to enhance from teenage years onwards.

Dilberta · 01/08/2008 09:54

just been peering in the mirror. No wrinkles. Does makeup actually stop them coming? or fill in the troughs?
To be honest, wouldn't know what to do with any of the stuff or where to put it!
I don't think I look 40. More like 30.

girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 09:56

I am actually quite envious of all you lot who say you never wear it - I have been wearing discreet foundation since I was about 14!
I have really good skin- strangers actually comment on it lol, - but it is very pale and almost translucent. Without make up I look as If I am ill.

For me, going out without make up would be akin to walking down the street stark naked.

I wear very little. My very glamorous editor doesn't wear it either. And since I started spending money on serious skincare, I've worn less.

My 37 year old colleague thought I was younger than her. I'm eight years older.

NomDePlume · 01/08/2008 10:04

I don't think anything. Why would I ?

I don't wear it day to day because I don't feel like I need it and the fact that my skin breaks out if I use foundation 2+ days (or nights) in a row, no matter which brand, how I apply it or how thoroughly I remove it at the end of the day.

I am more likely to notice (in a negative way) someone who is over or badly made up.

filthymindedvixen · 01/08/2008 10:07

I wear make-up because I am am fucking ugly without any. I envy and admire those of you who don't.
It takes me 5 mins, tops.
I only notice other women if they are wearing far too much make up.

taliac · 01/08/2008 10:15

I think we get fooled by this magazine led thing of one ideal of beauty, for which you need foundation, concealer, mascara etc etc etc.

I have good skin so I can absolutely get away without foundation etc, I just don't need it. Ditto mascara, I have dark lashes and although sometimes I wear a bit of clear mascara for definition I basically don't need it.

But at the same time I can't do what one of my best friends does - she has glowing skin that never looks tired (child free!) - so she always looks gorgeous unmade up. In fact when she has loads of make up on it just looks fake.

I look knackered in my natural state, so I wear undereye concealer, and a bit of eye liner, and some lip balm. Then I look healthyish.

Each to their own, I say.

OrmIrian · 01/08/2008 10:18

DOn't really think anything of it. Too much or badly applied would be more noticeable. I usually wear some these days because I'm sooo old. But not always.

sometimes I'd like to do that smoky eyes thing but having never worn eye liner or eyeshadow I don't know how.
And it probably would look at a bit daft round Lidl or at the Gynae!
I did try concealer once way back when but it made me get more spots. Only get spots now if I fail to drink water and eat too much crap

AnAngelWithin · 01/08/2008 11:38

I don't wear makeup. I wore makeup on my wedding day 10 years ago. Then the next time I wore it was when I was bridesmaid in March this year. Didn't feel comfortable wearing it though. I'm 28. People round here think its odd. DH says I don't need to wear it

Quattrocento · 01/08/2008 12:34

Yes but I want to know where the people are who think it is odd for a woman NOT to wear make up. Who are they? What do they do? Where do they live? Why have I never met any of them?

(Is my social circle really so restricted?)

girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 13:02

quattro- I am here!!

I think it odd for women not to wear any make up, cos unless you are 14 with perfect skin, you will look a bit better for a touch of it!

BTW if anyone wants any tips, the latest Good Housekeeping has 5 make up make overs with 5 top make up artists, all giving really natural looks. I haven't bought a copy but had a good read in supermarket.

Quattrocento · 01/08/2008 13:13

Pleased to meet you.

I only get to meet accountants and lawyers and bankers at work. They don't wear makeup - or nothing visible anyway. Most of them are men anyway. None of the PAs wear a lot of makeup but I suspect they get discouraged. A small proportion of school-run mums wear make-up I think, but most don't. None of my friends wear visible make-up in the normal course of events.

I'm wondering whether we are talking about three different things rather than two different things:

(i) Women who wear no make up

(ii) Women who wear invisible make up

(iii) Women with trowels

I don't know any women in category (iii). I don't know why that is. There are quite a few on the streets.

ExterminAitch · 01/08/2008 13:15

MI you LIE. you don't spend any money on products, you call nice ladies on the telephone and they send them to you...

Bink · 01/08/2008 13:20

Quattro, very disappointingly I can't recall the firm (so you can dismiss this as an urban myth if you like) but I was reminiscing with someone recently over "guidelines" you got given as trainees in City law firms, and she told me at her firm were given formal written instructions to Wear Makeup.

BettySpaghetti · 01/08/2008 13:22

I'd rather see someone with no make up than someone with it trowelled on

girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 13:24

Quattro- I am ii! - I hope.

I have just bought some nude eye shadow- all beiges etc and wear a Clinique nude lipstick- called Adore U- semi sheer.

The whole point is that make up should look as if you are not wearing it at all.

Dilberta · 01/08/2008 13:43

if you should look like you're not wearing any....wouldn't it be cheaper not too?

Cies · 01/08/2008 13:49

I'm another one who wears less makeup the older I get. And I'm only 26!

I went through a good few years in my early 20s with awful acne and no self confidence, so would slap on the foundation (although I think it didn't look too bad).

Now, if I'm working I'll put on a dash of mascara and some lip gloss, although I'm happy to go out with none on at all. At weekends, I'll do some eyeshadow and blusher, but really nothing heavy.

I do admire people who can pull off the 'natural look' to a t. I have a couple of friends who leave a large part of their salaries in Clinique and Benefit, and turn up looking lovely and fresh. But I can't do with the time it takes. I'm lazy me .

girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 14:15

dilberta- no- cos without I look like a corpse- with, I look healthy but au naturel!

blueshoes · 01/08/2008 15:05

I am with girlnextdoor.

I don't think it is odd that women do not wear makeup, because it seems to be quite common, at least in UK.

But I do think all women can look better with a bit of makeup, particularly as they get older. And the best makeup subtly enhances without being obvious that the wearer is using makeup. I don't endorse the trowel approach at all.

With subtle makeup, the skin colour is even and smoother, eyes a touch darker and deeper set, cheeks rosy-ish, lips thicker and more defined. The woman just looks groomed.

I work in in a City law firm. From what I observe, a lot of the younger women lawyers do wear make-up. But a significant number of women partners do not.

Poppycake · 01/08/2008 15:26

Back in the day, when I went to KPMG recruiting conference, they told us that women who wore make up earned on average 15% more than women who don't.

I thought:

  1. So how much more do men who wear make up earn ???
  2. This has got to be made up, surely???
  3. I am not going to work for this firm. Ever.

I sometimes do sometimes don't. Which means that sometimes I forget when I do, rub my eyes enthusiastically and end up looking like a panda! Do my clients want their legal affairs looked after by a panda?

Maybe a kung fu panda...
