after reading a few threads on here its got me thinking,
if people can't stand to see other or children in certain clothes what do they think about non make up wearing women?

I wear a small amount of make-up every day.
Tinted moisturiser with SPF15
Lancome juicy tube
Indigo eye pencil
Lancome mascara

On the whole, people look much much better with a small amount of make up But totally ridiculous with loads.

TIP
Do not wear strong eye make up and strong lipstick. You'll look like a hooker. Go for either or.

whenyouarethemoon · 01/08/2008 01:10

Advantages to no make up-
less crap to carry around
no mascara incidents
can spend money on other stuff
can crash into bed immediately
can not look like Danny LaRue (skulks off to bed to avoid the make up artists)

I wear blusher and mascara and eyeliner, and a factor 15 tinted moisturizer, otherwise people ask me if I'm Ok and would I like to sit down - I can be deathly pale, with dark circles under my eyes if I even look at gluten and dairy products.
My 'regimen' takes about one minute, and I whip the lot off with my face wash Cetaphil at night, sometimes using a babywipe -takes another minute. I try not to eat dairy and gluten as I know that that makes me look haggard.

I brush my teeth for 10 minutes and I use teepees and floss - I find it quite meditative.

I also wax my legs during summer and shave under my arms - I've got bored embracing my inner yeti and I want someone else to embrace her for me!! so it helps if I don't scare the horses.

ghosty · 01/08/2008 01:49

I wear make up because i like the way I look with it on. I wear a light mineral powder foundation, bit of blusher and mascara. Lips have just lipsalve during the day or lippy if I go out in the evening.
If I don't wear make up people tell me I look tired. I don't like that.
I wasn't blessed with beautiful skin - my skin is oily and has open pores ... At least I won't be as wrinkly as most when I am old though ...

This is a really interesting post to me because it's reminding me of one of the most classic back-handed compliments I've ever received. BIL once said that he and his wife were "just saying how confident you must be, since you don't wear any makeup and don't care how you look." I have NEVER seen SIL without a full face of makeup, including very, very thick and waxy foundation... it's like spackle. I never wear makeup, my husband says that he prefers me without it (though I suspect he didn't realise I was wearing makeup when we first dated, and now he just thinks I"m getting old...) NOT putting it on has become such a habit that I can no longer be bothered to do it. I'm certain people around me think I should make more of an effort with my hair and my face. I probably should.

GordonTheGopher · 01/08/2008 06:24

I love wearing make-up and rarely leave the house without any. It makes me prettier and gives me more confidence. DH loves it too - didn't realise it was such a bad thing to want to please my dh?!

Oh and I get it done in less than 3 minutes.

girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 08:33

Wow! What a fierce debate this is!

What surprises me is how the anti-make up wearers have such an out dated idea of what make up looks like!
No-one is suggesting going around like Danny la Rue or the late Barbara Cartland.

The whole point of make up nowadays is that you look natural- the textures are sheer and the colours are subtle and neutral.

I just know that I look better with it- without, I have no eyelashes, pale slightly sallow skin, though it is in good nick, and purple under-eye shadows.

and no time is just an excuse- how can you possibly be so busy not to find 15 minutes to do your face? You could always get up a few mins earlier! ( waits for screams of protest).

But each to their own- I just object a little to being made to feel that make up is something to be ashamed of using, or that it makes your skin "bad" in some way. Rubbish- there are loads of companies out there that do make up without the nasties- think Aveda and Dr Hauscka .

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 01/08/2008 08:48

I actually think I could do with a little now, but I have no idea how to put the blasted stuff on or what to wear.

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 08:51

ive found this quite interesting.

OP posts:
girlnextdoor · 01/08/2008 09:01

jimjam- if you can find the time, go along to a good dept store and ask for a make-over- Clinique are very good, and Bobbi Brown are great.

If you are nervous, I'd suggest you start with a tinted moisturiser, or a very light base- look at the Clinique website and you will see them all- a bit of eye pencil, mascara, dab of blusher and lip gloss.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 01/08/2008 09:05

oh no I can't do base. I visited a Clinique counter before my wedding - and hated it. Too much.

Tinted moisturiser sounds more realistic. I have some sparkly lip stuff (light browny colour) that I love. But it looks crazy by itself. So I put it on then wipe it off.

Oblomov · 01/08/2008 09:06

Girl next door, I thought the debate wasn't fierce at all, but very very tame. Compared to most on MN !!
I have time in the mornings. I just don't wear alot. Hardly any, really.

SorenLorensen · 01/08/2008 09:11

I wear make-up pretty much every day - Lily LooLoo Lilo wotnot mineral powder stuff (it's very good - I've relinquished 'proper' foundation for ever since reading a thread from expat - I think it was expat anyway - about it), eyeshadow, eye pencil and mascara. Don't wear lipstick. I don't wear it because I am a bad feminist/downtrodden/wanting to please dh/other men, I wear it because I look better with it. I am not caked, trowelled or orange. And if I don't wear it I look OK but people tell me I look tired.

But I don't care or even notice if other women don't wear make-up - it's just a non-issue (though I do wonder about the orange women flogging make-up in Boots - why would I take make-up advice from someone who looks like they've been Tango-ed?)

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 09:18

so what so good about mineral power foundation?

OP posts:
SorenLorensen · 01/08/2008 09:25

It's easier to put on, it's lighter, I think my skin's better since using it, it's less 'make-up-y' - I am a convert Lilylolo do little trial sizes which last for ages so you can try different shades at not great expense

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 09:30

im wearing mkeup today, because we are having lunch and dinner out.

OP posts:
blueshoes · 01/08/2008 09:31

Despite my standards of appearance having fallen since the arrival of dcs, I will not step out of the house without makeup. And it is an absolute must for going to work.

It takes only 5 minutes and I hardly spend anything on makeup: Bog standard moisturiser, over-the-counter eyebrow pencil, eye-liner, blusher, lipstick and foundation/powder.

My skin is in good nick, but makeup adds polish and enhances your features, without having to be obvious that you are actually using makeup.

I don't think women above a certain age can get away without wearing makeup. We can always look better at any age, in any case. 5 minutes is not a huge effort.

lovelysongbird · 01/08/2008 09:32

sl looks nice stuff, ill try that next time

OP posts:
blueshoes · 01/08/2008 09:32

I use LilyLolo mineral foundation and powder as well, for casual days.

InLoveWithSweeneyTodd · 01/08/2008 09:35

I rarely use make up and when I do is just blush, eyeliner and mascara - no lipstick. I find a lot of make up ages me.
I do have nice skin though .

never worn it and frankly wouldn't know what to do with it or how to make it stick. But since turning 40 I've been wondering what I do when I get wrinkles. they must be due any day now.
And lipstick. How does it stay on and not on your teeth or cup? And doesn't it feel like something you'd want to rub off?
What certain age is that Blueshoes and am I too late?

cyteen · 01/08/2008 09:44

"My mother never wears it, and never showed me how to wear it either. I was so jealous of the girls at school who had mothers who showed them things like shaving legs and make-up. Mine just stamped off to Greenham Common in a strop!"

llareggub, sounds like your mum and my mum would have got on famously

Miggsie · 01/08/2008 09:46

I never wore it when young as I wanted to save all my money to spend on other things.
Then when I was 25 my soon to be SIL said to me "all my friends and I hate you because you don't need to wear make up".

Nice, eh?

I only wear make up when I do a play and after trawling round the shops trying to find make up NOT already applied to eyelid-less rabbits I am STUNNED at the bloody price, and the cotton wool stuff, and the remover stuff!

How do women who wear lots of makeup make ends meet??????

Anyway, friends and colleagues are stuck with looking at my skin day in day out and I do not whip out a mirror during meetings to check my face, like someone in our office...I just can't relate to that at all.
