Last night DH & I enjoyed a rare night out. As we were waiting in the queue for our taxi home two attractive girls who couldn't have been more than 18 got out of the taxi & headed across the road to a local nightclub. As they emerged from the taxi I couldnt believe it.I am not exagerating when I say one of the girls was wearing a skirt that was so tight & short her bum cleavage was totally visible. I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this. I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself but I can't understand why anyone would agree with this particular look.

As far as the posts go regarding women displaying it all on a night out some people feel thats ok. Where is that a movement towards women being free to be treated as equals. Sadly I feel its the total opposite.

Yeah I don’t like visible bum outside of the beach but you will get told it’s no big deal.

The answer to both is no but I do feel strongly about exhibitionism

There's a big difference between wearing a very short skirt and deliberately involving unwilling people in sexual behaviour...

You talk about equality, yet your constant judgement of women's bodies and clothing does absolutely nothing to advance it.

Policing what women wear and questioning their decency is exactly the kind of misogynistic attitude that undermines equality!!

OK ,let's encourage men to walk about with their manhood out & see where that ends up

Ah, the good old strawman argument. Cleavage and short skirts aren't the same as waving your genitals about 🤣

I agree in the sense that the rest of us didn’t consent to seeing that lol. Plus it must be draughty!

The thing don’t rape cases still include cross examination where people are asked about what they are wearing? It’s obviously wrong but whilst that still happens some people will judge you based on your outfit.

Its the same with cutting through a park at night etc, obviously we should be able to but I don’t do it.

Idayatatime · Yesterday 18:20

My thoughts remain.
Designers who encourage young women to flaunt their genitals including their bum & boobs should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

The paintings were porn, please try to follow what is being said here.

And as I said it was the fashion for certain types of women, your bog standard merchants wife or financier's wife didnt dress with everything falling out and even the aristocratic mistresses who did, didnt do that all the time. The pictures dont represent every day, on the street fashion of the day.

The pictures sure, but we were talking about fashion , not pictures, and fashion in rhe 18th century saw European court dresses and Egyptian gowns cut to show highly exposed breasts,

women have always been the peacocks of the human race, pretending this is something new is silly, throughout history we have seen women wear clothing to expose themselves at periods of time.

In the 1980s my very stylish friend went to the Hacienda in a basque, stockings and suspenders. Chanelling Madonna with huge style and panache.

I honestly feel some mumsnetters have led very sheltered lives.

I love Madonna but wouldn't expect young girls to walk out in the oufit as I'm sure neither would Madonna

She never said her friend was a child, in fact I’d have assumed it was a woman.

I think an alarming number of them would, if it were socially acceptable.

Or to any decent young girl

Young “girls” as far as I’m aware do not go to night clubs. Young girls go to primary school. I thought night clubs had an over 18 policy? Young women may enter though on proof of age.

You might want to look at fashion styles in the French court in the days of Luis XlV circa 1650 onwards; the exposed breast was the norm. No Mumsnet back then to cite prejudice though.

Although we are still fighting, we have definitely won some battles.

Women have way more rights than 30 years ago.

30 years ago women would be shunned by their own families for getting a divorce, having sex outside of the marriage, choosing to be single etc.

That’s not true. You have your decades wrong. I was born in 1955 and so grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s. I can assure you that none of the things you list were true. Have you not heard of the swinging 60’s? There was far more freedom and fun then. Things are far more judgemental now.

So why is it socially acceptable for women to display they bums in public

It's ridiculous but hey ho, that's what young ones do these days, they go out practically naked. I personally don't find it offensive but I have a laugh about it when I see them. Also, part of me thinks "good for you, you wear whatever you like".

It's just another example of the onus being put on the victims rather than the perpetrators, which only perpetuates the very attitudes and behaviours that contribute to the problem in the first place.

Clothing will not be the deciding factor in a man choosing to rape a woman.

Funny yes,but why would a young woman make herself a victim of ridicule which is exactly one of my points.

Wearing revealing clothing is not the same as exposing your genitals. That's quite a leap just to avoid the actual argument!

cubedcube · Yesterday 18:32

@PeasOffThe onus is put on the victim often which is completely wrong but it silly to deny it doesn’t happen just because it’s wrong.

Grammarnut · Yesterday 18:32

Are you sure it wasn't a pair of shorts?

willowstar · Yesterday 18:35

It might have been my 17 year old daughter and her friend! Gorgeous girls/young women. Went out wearing barely anything this weekend. They absolutely don't do it for male attention. They are strong and confident. They also know it offends older people like my mum and they don't really care. Nor should they. They are young and revelling in their gorgeousness and youth and I assume that they will grow out of it.

In this weather? She must have been bloody freezing.
