Last night DH & I enjoyed a rare night out. As we were waiting in the queue for our taxi home two attractive girls who couldn't have been more than 18 got out of the taxi & headed across the road to a local nightclub. As they emerged from the taxi I couldnt believe it.I am not exagerating when I say one of the girls was wearing a skirt that was so tight & short her bum cleavage was totally visible. I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this. I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself but I can't understand why anyone would agree with this particular look.

@PeasOffThe onus is put on the victim often which is completely wrong but it silly to deny it doesn’t happen just because it’s wrong.

I agree it does happen and that's part of a much bigger problem.

Acknowledging that victim blaming exists isn't the same as accepting or perpetuating it. We should be challenging those sorts of attitudes, not expecting women to change their clothing.

30 years ago women would be shunned by their own families for getting a divorce, having sex outside of the marriage, choosing to be single etc.

Utter nonsense. 30 years ago was 1996…

What is it with MN and people getting their decades mixed up? The 1990s gave us This Life and Sex and the City - full frontal nudity on mainstream television. It was far from a sexually oppressive time. In fact, I would say it was a much more sex-positive time than today.

You can be extremely sexy without being trashy.Im happy my son brought home the former. If he brought home a girl with her boobs & bum out I would question his taste but knowing him this would be an absolute no.

Same here. My sons wouldn't like a girl like this. They would (rightfully or wrongfully) think that she in Katie Price style would be flaunting what she considered to be her main assets which would be a good indication that there is not much depth to explore.

I feel sad that the prostitute look is what some aim for in order to get male attention. You don't get this in Paris unless you are an actual sex worker...

well you aren't because you are talking about one particular girl

I think I have confused you. I was simply pointing out that some people (no matter how wrong) will judge you on your clothing. Acknowledging that judgement exists isn’t perpetuating it.

Do you not go on holidays abroad then where many of us wear bikinis? I am 41 and I don't care if it offends people. I work flipping hard at the gym and I look pretty decent. Out of interest, what did you wear on this night out? I work in a secondary school and I can assure you we see it all. Short skirts, belly buttons on show, awful cheap see through leggings. Sometimes we do have to intervene but really, it's usually just a phase.

“I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself.”

and

“I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this”

are entirely contradictory statements @Idayatatime

So true. If a girl doesn't have the confidence to dress without looking like a whore then thats sad & doing nothing for equality

My wider family experienced divorce in the 90s and imo there was definitely still a stigma & a broken home narrative. A lot changed by the end of the decade.

No, sorry I think it's the other way around!

I was agreeing with you and then tacked on some more at the end (as others do perpetuate it - wasn't saying you were, apologies if it came across that way).

@Idayatatime I have reported your last entirely unnecessary, nasty and misogynistic post.

I do think seeing a bikini at a beach or a beach party is different to a bum in Sainsbury’s or Pizza express though.

I was allowed to wear my own clothes at 6th form (which I loved) but we couldn’t wear really short skirts, low cut tops and no belly out. But the boys had to wear suits so we were the lucky ones

T1mesAreHardForDreamers · Yesterday 18:51

I do find it ironic some posters are shaming the OP, talking about her dress choices and tearing her down in other tiringly misogynistic ways, like accusing her of only being bother because her husband was

Do you realise that this is a disgusting post?

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 18:56

What is actually wrong with "looking like a whore" anyway? It's a short skirt on a night out. Big whoop.

Are we really still stuck in that outdated, misogynistic mindset?

Idayatatime · Yesterday 18:50

Yeah yeah. It’s a really nasty post. And you sound nastier and nastier as the thread goes on.

Idayatatime · Yesterday 18:56

behindtheanimalhouse · Yesterday 16:56

It's fashion at the moment. I do roll my eyes when I see girls wearing this to school to be honest. But really why get riled up about it enough to make a thread.

Rightly or wrongly I would hope parents would encourage their daughters to have more self respect than to display their bums in a nightclub. Why is that so wrong
