Yes,I know,none of my business

Last night DH & I enjoyed a rare night out. As we were waiting in the queue for our taxi home two attractive girls who couldn't have been more than 18 got out of the taxi & headed across the road to a local nightclub. As they emerged from the taxi I couldnt believe it.I am not exagerating when I say one of the girls was wearing a skirt that was so tight & short her bum cleavage was totally visible. I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this. I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself but I can't understand why anyone would agree with this particular look.

It's fashion at the moment. I do roll my eyes when I see girls wearing this to school to be honest. But really why get riled up about it enough to make a thread.

I wasnt going to comment on this but just a reminder that exiting taxis is universally hazardous on a night out. Please get over it, I am sure you didnt see any holes or orifice! You are just worried your DH could see. And she probably had a better arse than yours. Why I hate these comments, is because sooner ir later someone will pipe up 'personal safety'. Or they are 'asking for it'. And other sickening narratives. In fact i I find this misogynistic. Yes women can be misogynistic too. So can I sometimes, but I'm learning

Yes this deep seated misogyny the op is now displaying the awful things she’s writing, is normally rooted in envy and a feeling of insecurity where the6 compare rheir own bodies. And so they attack.

I don't believe in 'it's her choice' - those choices are influenced by a patriarchal world which tells girls that their value is in pleasing men.

I also don't believe you're a feminist. You're literally doing the patriarchy's work for them - as so many women do. The patriarchy wouldn't be able to survive without women like you.

MyManinCaracas · Yesterday 17:00

Women from other cultures judge 😆 only in Britain are we told it’s wrong. I judge, usually briefly, but I do judge.

MindBlip · Yesterday 17:01

I'm nearly 60, out of touch with the young folk and a right old fun sponge, but even I know this is just the fashion at the moment. I was lucky enough to be a teenager when the trend was baggy trousers and flat shoes, but my sister's age group used to go out in high heels and pencil skirts so tight they might as well have been hobbled. This generation will get mighty cold right now, and look back and cringe later. YABU to make it a big issue.

StarlightLady · Yesterday 17:02

The OP would have hated me in my late teens (late 40s now), l was UK born but lived in Paris because of dad’s job. On a summer’s evening a group of us used to go to one of the bridges across the Seine and flash our boobs at the tourist boats passing below. Happy days ❤️.

And nobody died.

I think this is age related, and posters who think this can’t see another reason to do it,

they don’t understand these young women are of a generation who believe they can dress as they wish, enjoy their bodies and sexuality and it’s not about men,

FKAT · Yesterday 17:06

The young woman in question was wearing an entirely appropriate outfit for a nightclub. She got a taxi to the club. At no point was she shopping in Tesco or working in a hospital or volunteering at a foodbank while showing her arse.

She was wearing a clubbing outfit to a club. SHOCK.

I wore exactly those type of outfits in the 90s. I went to the Hacienda in a bra and jeans. I wore a bikini and sarong on Hawaiian theme night at a bar. I once appeared on a late night dating show (filmed during the day) and wore an arse-revealing mini and croptop on the bus in broad daylight. I am now boring and respectable and married to a very 'good' man. My mum is an 80 year old who wore hotpants in the 1960s. She is also a pillar of the community.

bipbopdo · Yesterday 17:06

Sometimes I’m very shocked by what teenage girls are wearing. People say they wore the same at the age, but it’s simply untrue. I saw a girl who was around 15 this summer wearing an absolutely tiny nude coloured sports bra and shorts this summer, but they were made of a very thin material, so you could see everything. I’ve seen skimpy bikinis cover more up. Not pleasant. I felt like I was being flashed.

Revealing clothes are completely fine imo, but there’s a time and a place - and a limit. I don’t want to see the outline of someone’s vulva anymore than I want to see the outline of someone’s penis. It’s inappropriate at best

alcovecupboards · Yesterday 17:07

It's just what they wear now. My own are either in incredibly baggy clothes that literally could house another person, or skintight 'sportswear'. I'm old enough to remember when we all wore those horribly restrictive bandage dresses. We couldn't sit down properly!

StarlightLady · Yesterday 17:08

@bipbopdo How do you know it is not true? Were you with these individuals.

ThePerfectStormBird · Yesterday 17:09

It was also none of my business that I went trick and treating to a local town with my kids and on the way home went through a village/small town where all I saw were teenage girls with skirts that skimmed their arse. We stopped off to grab chips and even the teenage boys were staring at the girls so it can’t be that standard. I know the local school is constantly struggling to get the girls to stop rolling their skirts so I’m guessing it’s more of the same, but I’m not convinced they know quite what they’re showing from the rear. It’s obscene.

brunettemic · Yesterday 17:10

Maybe she found you ogling her bum offensive.

ChildrenOfAlbionRovers · Yesterday 17:11

I've seen quite a few young women on nights out wearing shorts or very short skirts which show a fair bit of lower arse cheek. It is evidently fashionable right now, and they should be free to wear whatever they want.

In previous decades showing the top of your arse crack was fashionable. Are you old enough to remember Alexander McQueen's bumsters, OP?

OneHazelBird · Yesterday 17:11

Women have been wearing short skirts and low cut tops for years.

On Halloween, many people wear even skimpier outfits.

I saw a group of guys in mankinis.
They were showing a lot more skin than any of the women I saw.
I wasn’t offended.

Same way I’m not offended when I see men with their tops off in the summer and arse cracks out when they bend over.

LOL.That's exactly what I believed - and how I myself acted - in the 90s.

Look at us now, still fighting the very same basic battles of feminism to be treated as humans with the same value as men, and still having to centre them in pretty much everything we do.

The patriarchy is very good at squashing any dissent, or co-opting it into 'girl boss' or 'it's empowering' liberal feminism.

If you look at the world now, is it better for women than it was 30 years ago? No, because the patriarchy is smart.

I have eyes and have lived a very full life. I was a full on party girl until a couple of years ago. There has been a big change in what girls wear and when they wear it in the last 5 years or so

Sherararara · Yesterday 17:12

“Rare night out”
When was the last one? 1955?

MayJuneMay · Yesterday 17:12

I saw a young girl, 15 or 16 I'm guessing, getting off the school bus in our village recently wearing a skirt of a similar length to the one the OP describes. Admittedly she was wearing tights but it didn't look particularly practical for a day at school.

Spottysock · Yesterday 17:15

I don’t love an arse crack - male or female!

ChristmasQuestion123 · Yesterday 17:15

I'm a middle aged woman.

Middle aged women have been shocked by teen outfits since teenage dress started to be a thing.

In the 1950s Bridget Bardot scandalised everyone with her bikini.

In the 60s it was mini skirts.

In the 1970s they wore hot pants that were shocking to middle aged people.

I guess teenagers have kind of run out of shocking things to wear, so they're only left with making the previous shocking garments even smaller.

It's the job of the middle aged woman to be scandalised.

So if you're scandalised by the shocking teenage dress sense it seems everyone is fulfilling their role correctly. I think you're allowed to talk about it and everything - where would be the fun in it if we weren't all scandalised !

StarlightLady · Yesterday 17:17

I hope the OP gets even more worked up about child poverty rather than bottoms.

FKAT · Yesterday 17:17

Don't ever look up what Josephine Baker wore clubbing in the 1920s or Grace Jones at Studio 54 in the 1970s.

UndeadLife · Yesterday 17:18

PeasOff · Yesterday 16:51

This is such a nonsensical argument and blatant victim blaming. Women who dress conservatively attract arseholes too.

A man's behaviour has absolutely nothing to do with how much skin a woman shows. Decent men don't become decent because a woman wears a longer skirt, and predators don't suddenly disappear because she's dressed modestly either 🤦🏼‍♀️

As for your son, I'd be more concerned about raising a son who judges women by what they wear rather than their character. A woman's clothing doesn't define her as a person.

Agreed, I online long distance dated in my late teens and 20's due to health issues and they only saw pictures or messenger webcam chats of my face/head, never saw my body clothed let alone half naked and i was abused horrifically, even sexual abuse.

NoNewsisGood · Yesterday 17:18

Idayatatime · Yesterday 15:07

Everyone has their own standards. My teenage relatives are very fashionable but wouldn't dream of showing their bum so yes its news to me that this is popular. I'm sorry if my post has annoyed people. I actually thought there would be a lot of agreement but I was obviously wrong.I will leave it there.

I am not sure 'offensive' is the word I would use, but I'm with you in that I don't want to see it. I don't want to see topless men wandering around town in the summer, I didn't want to see the lad's pants today who was cycling with his mates with his trousers so far down his whole bum was just his underpants. I also don't want to see the pants of young girls who are wearing the short skirts but are walking down a hill towards me.

But yeah, I also wouldn't visit a nudist beach. Would prefer people to keep their more private parts to themselves.
