Last night DH & I enjoyed a rare night out. As we were waiting in the queue for our taxi home two attractive girls who couldn't have been more than 18 got out of the taxi & headed across the road to a local nightclub. As they emerged from the taxi I couldnt believe it.I am not exagerating when I say one of the girls was wearing a skirt that was so tight & short her bum cleavage was totally visible. I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this. I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself but I can't understand why anyone would agree with this particular look.

Ok,I was shocked and I'm perfectly enitled to feel like this. Posters share far worse Absolutely nothing wrong with a short skirt but surely there has to be a limit to what girls show on a night out or is nothing off limits nowadays.

Edited

Why does there have to be a limit to ‘what girls show’? And why does that limit have to be the one you choose?

I find this offensive

So what? That’s not anyone else’s problem.

Arbourimage · Yesterday 15:55

I can’t really understand why you find it so offensive. Women have worn short shirts for decades.
I’m quite partial to one.

Weeelokthen · Yesterday 15:56

I'm dreading the 8yr old getting older. What mother would want her daughter to dress like that? Genuinely?
I'm really hoping under knee sack cloths come in by the time she hits her teens 😂

FancyKitten · Yesterday 15:58

I saw teen girls getting on the bus like this, last night. Five of them, all wearing jackets, other clothes on top. Then no trousers, bum edges hanging out. And then footwear. They were about 14, I’d say. Fake tanned legs, as well.

ForTipsyFinch · Yesterday 16:00

I don’t like it because it makes me feel creeped out knowing older men will be noticing and starting. Did your husband notice?

somanychristmaslights · Yesterday 16:00

It’s been like this for ages. Some of the shorts in saw in the summer were more like knickers! I don’t like it as I think it’s slutty, but it’s their choice what they wear.

WokeUpEarlyWalkedTheDog · Yesterday 16:01

I saw a few late teen / early twenties women dressed in flared skirts so short that I could see their arse crack a couple of weeks ago. They were walking in front of me as we exited a major and packed train station platform so it was difficult to walk, and therefor look, elsewhere

Not my taste or style and I wish women didn’t feel the need to dress like this but mostly I just rolled my eyes.

He obviously did then shook his head as if to say unbelievable. Suffice to say I never mentioned it.His reaction was enough to tell me he was of the same opinion as me. The idea of going in front of my father dressed like that when I was a teenager is enough to make me sick 😫

Unless you are the mum.
I don't have a daughter, I have a son, but if I did, I would have plenty to say if she was dressed to go out showing her bare bum cheeks.

If she was old enough to be out clubbing, it wouldn’t be any of your business what she wore. You don’t get to impose your clothing preferences on other adults just because you popped them out of your vag a couple of decades ago.

Again: so what? Your feelings aren’t relevant to other people’s choice of clothes. It really is that simple. Other women don’t have to dress to your specifications.

JLou08 · Yesterday 16:07

It was hot pants in my day.
Surely you've seen a young woman in very revealing clothing before? This is not a new thing.

Tablesandchairs23 · Yesterday 16:07

You find it offensive. Then dont look!

FancyKitten · Yesterday 16:11

A well-known male journalist wrote about it a while ago (when his daughters were entering the teen years) saying… Of course I’m not looking, but of course I can see it. There is literally bare arses on view! Other men (dads) agreed that they found it embarrassing too.

I think it’s slutty

🙄

Askandyforcompo · Yesterday 16:14

I do think it's an interesting discussion.

Why do young women dress in an overly sexualised way? On the whole it is for the male gaze I would say. Men don't dress like that. I guess it's the equivalent of a baboon showing its bottom, it's posturing to attract a mate.

Except we have evolved as human beings to understand that some things that are actually because of a biological imperative are not acceptable in a civilised society.

On the other hand we don't want to police what women wear. I would just encourage all women to question why they are wearing what they are wearing and if it's genuinely "for me" as many women, me included, say

FancyKitten · Yesterday 16:14

Also, on the beach during the summer I noticed that all of the teenage girls were wearing thong bottoms. While the lads were in knee-length swimming shorts. We wouldn’t have been seen dead like that when I was young (90s). But I do remember seeing teen girls topless on the beach in Spain, back then, and being mortified at the thought of it…

We see this every weekend really, we go out every weekend, so its a constant.

I mean its not just the look, its the practicality as well, its bloody freezing!!

Lordy, op, I’m cringing so hard for you now, you’re either unbelievably naive or your husband knows you so well he knows to visibly react in the way you wish, he didn’t react the same way, he’s not start8ng threads about young adult women’s arses offending him,

and no one is asking you to dress like this, I am unsure why you keep making their clothing choices about you, no one asked you to dress like that in front of your father, so there is no need for you to think on it and come over all sick

i do wonder if you’re falling into the trap of internet hyperbole, which is just making you sound a little silly

NetZeroZealot · Yesterday 16:22

I would have found it shocking too OP.

I'm amazed at how most of the teenagers at our local secondary school wear their uniform skirts so short they barely cover their bum. Many wearing black opaque tights as well so perhaps not as bad. But still I wish they wouldn't - perhaps that makes me prudish - but I don't think there's a male equivalent, and I think it's inappropriate in school uniform.

likelysuspect · Yesterday 16:23

Stormyrose · Yesterday 15:11

It’s rhe word offensive I think. And rhe judgment.

i roll my eyes at it, I still remember, even at the age of 57, dressing in a risqué way in my late teens and early 20s. I saw some of my daughter’s friends do it.

None do it for the male gaze, they do it for fashion, risqué, revelling in their own youth and sexuality,

the issue was your scorn and outrage, the level of judgement you poured on these women, who are at liberty to dress as they please, and not for your approval

They absolutely do it for the male gaze, theres no other purpose to it

Its the pornification of all areas of womens lives.

BurnoutGP · Yesterday 16:25

Offensive to who? And how? Yes none of your business!
My 19yr old DD went out for halloween so dressed up. She had a sexy police type thing which was very short. Not my thing but im glad she is happy and confident. How the fuck does it hurt you in any way.

localnotail · Yesterday 16:26

She can wear whatever fuck she wants, even no skirt at all. Yes, its weird - but its none of anyone's business.

Edited: we, as older people, are totally allowed to roll our eyes and tut. But ultimately, its not "offensive" or something you need to be involved with.

Worse thing I've seen was a girl wearing thin cotton underpants in winter, in Tesco. I mean, it was fucking weird but was it any of my business? No, unless someone would have bothered her than I would have made it my business...

Totally understandable. I wore short skirts etc but within reason. My father would have chased me along the high street before he would tolerate me going out with my bum & boobs on show. I'm grateful I only attracted good men & as a result & I ended up with a good one.

Is it any more offensive than a low cut top?

I think that if I had a nice enough bottom I would wear a skirt short enough to show it off. Maybe.
