Yes,I know,none of my business

Last night DH & I enjoyed a rare night out. As we were waiting in the queue for our taxi home two attractive girls who couldn't have been more than 18 got out of the taxi & headed across the road to a local nightclub. As they emerged from the taxi I couldnt believe it.I am not exagerating when I say one of the girls was wearing a skirt that was so tight & short her bum cleavage was totally visible. I find this offensive & can't believe a girl would leave the house dressed like this. I believe its nobody else's business how a girl wishes to present herself but I can't understand why anyone would agree with this particular look.

Yes it does. It says the wearer has the body confidence to dress any damn way she wants. Isn't that what we want for young women, to feel empowered in their bodies?

What does empowered mean in this situation?
What’s the end goal? What is the pinacle of empowerment in this situation?

A gradual progression to see through clothing? This trend already visible in Hollywood red carpets etc will work its way to the high street - but the girls’/women who wear the high street version won’t have an assortment of minders watching over them.
Perhaps it could evolve to underwear only before moving onto full nudity?

And then the collection of mumsneters’ who
can see no benefit in collective societal standards can celebrate this victory of complete empowerment and body confidence, while the rest of us will see naked, vulnerable women and a general society that’s a bit less pleasant to live in.

This is such a misogynistic thread that I wouldn't be surprised if OP was a man. It's disappointing that some women find it appropriate to come onto Mumsnet and talk about other women in such derogatory terms.

I hate this attitude on MN as well though - anything someone doesn't like or agree with, the poster must automatically be a man.

But she didn't ? She said they were dressed as one would suppose sex workers would be. Not that they actually were prostitutes.

She said they looked like whores. This was her quote:

"So true. If a girl doesn't have the confidence to dress without looking like a whore then thats sad & doing nothing for equality."

TheBlueKoala · Yesterday 20:31

Passingthroughagain · Yesterday 20:18

Oh do give over. You think the kind of sleazy men who seek out prostitutes to sleep with are bowling up to young women in bars and asking for a price list just because they're wearing a short skirt?

We all choose how to present ourselves to the world. Get up on selfrighteous horses but I'm not to old to remember going out with friends who deliberately tried to show as much as possible in order to get male attention. We all wanted to be pretty but we knew damn well that showing everything def is a code for saying I am open to all and everything even if that was not necessarily the case.

Empowered in this situation means wearing what the hell they like.

Every decade sees older people rail against youth fashion, whether it was the miniskirt in the sixties, punk in the Eighties, rap bling in the Nineties. This is no different.

looking like a whore is not being one though. Big difference. And the OP thought it was a shame on young beautiful girls to denigrate themselves.

What a ridiculous comment. How embarassing,

It not ridiculous at all.
And embarrassing for who?
I think you need a reality check.

  • Newcastle Fake Taxi Incident: A 51-year-old man posing as a taxi driver was jailed for seven years at Newcastle Crown Court after prowling club areas at night and bundling a young woman who had become separated from her friends into his car.
  • Southgate Club Kidnap (Historical Case): A 17-year-old girl was forced into a purple Ford Fiesta XR2 outside a nightclub in Friern Barnet Road, Southgate, prompting a Met Police witness appeal.
  • South Wales & Rhondda Incidents: Police in South Wales have issued appeals involving women being forced or dragged toward vehicles near local clubs or evening venues, such as incidents near the Soul Suite club in Rhondda or near a rugby club/function in Pyle.
  • Stockport Kidnap Appeal: Greater Manchester Police launched urgent public appeals after a woman was dragged back into a dark hatchback and assaulted near a crossroads in Stockport.
  • Birmingham Ladypool Road Rescue: Quick-thinking members of the public formed a human barricade and stopped a car after a teenage girl was grabbed and forced into a vehicle, leading to kidnapping charges against two men
LemonTreeGrove · Yesterday 20:36

I did wonder if the builder's bum look would come into fashion for women after all the up your bum leggings and bikinis that have been in fashion. I guess after that it'll get lower and lower at the front.

You have no idea what these women were wearing! FFS. Victim blaming much?!

Honestly, you should be ashamed for posting this. I hope none of the victims see it and see themselves being blamed by another woman on a thread where young women have been denigrated as whores.

Let's face it the idea of young girls going on with their bums & cleavage on show is 💯 not in any way shape or form acceptable.

Says who? You? Are you the thought police?
You must be one of those older very stupid judgemental MAGA types we see interviewed. You are hideous not these young women.

What the fuck? You've gone from imagining that women in crap clothes will be approached by johns to giving us a list of abductions and attempted abductions? And trying to link it to women wearing crap clothes?

What are you trying to say? Being mistaken for a sex worker is like being abducted? You are responsible for being abducted based on how you dress even when you've got no idea how a victim was dressed?

Are you utterly sexist or just totally nonsensical?

I know, it's absolutely disgusting. To list real-life victims to make a point that they must've been dressed like prostitutes to have been attacked is one of the worst things I've ever read on this site.

grindergirl · Yesterday 20:46

The OP is getting a lot of unwarranted hatred on here.
Fashion designers and marketeers do not want to empower girls and women. They just want to flog stuff. Creating a so-called trend opens up a new market aimed at the gullible, and nowadays they have plenty of influencers to help them
I have no skin in the game, but if I had a young son I wouldn't want cracks and arses constantly being pushed in his eyeballs---the hideous trend isn't just clubbing gear
Teenage girls can often be some of the cruellest creatures on the planet. I pity the poor overweight sods who want to be part of the gang, are encouraged to flaunt their all, and end up being a laughing stock. Bare arses aren't always pretty

I agree.
Interestingly though, all bar one seem to be in 'clubbing' areas, so I doubt they'd be wearing boilersuits.
(In the last event quoted police could find no proof of the incident)

I used to dress in tiny skirts and tops when i was thst sort of age. My parents used to shake their head in bemusement. I genuinely did not give a shit if someone else didn't like it - i did.

Now in my 40s and when i see women out dressed like that, i think good for them. Why should they care?

My daughter is 8 and im sure in 10 years time she will be doing exactly the same, and we will quietly smile, worry that shes cold but be glad she is comfortable wearing whatever she wants to wear.
