Get a bra fitting. None if that "add on 4 inches and divide by the number you first thought of " nonsense that M&S do. Go to Bravisimmo, John Lewis or an independent retailer. I bet you're not a 38G.
Then everything else will hang better.

I’m mid 40s I stay away from m and s etc to be honest I find there clothes aging , casual looks go for modern trainers , adidas gazelles , new balance , fitted jeans I pair with plain t shirt and blazer or a long trench coat , for more modern styles check out Michelle keegans very range , very classic styles with a modern twist , Louise redkapp peacocks range is nice too , I wear jeans , nice shirt and a jumper over it paired with ankle boots too

Skin care and make up have come down in price so much. Gives me a lift in the morning to look a bit more awake ! If you do a quick cleanse , pore pad and nice moisturiser with vitamin c at night maybe. Then one of those dewy foundation tubes from Superdrug with some blush and mascara to start with. Superdug should have it all. Tubing mascara doesn't smudge and comes off easily.

Have look at Melissa Murrell, personal stylist, on Instagram and Facebook. She’s really good at dressing women of all shapes and sizes although she’s quite small and slim herself. A variety of budgets as well.

Nylonflares · Yesterday 21:49

But @BitterHarvest is feeling bad about herself and wants to look more foxy @BuddyForeigner

Yuletidefelicitations · Yesterday 21:52

Not RTFT but you don’t look like a size 18. Maybe some of your clothes are too big so they’re unflattering. Try on a smaller size?

I mean this in the nicest way possible but that outfit is horrendous it looks like something an 84 yr old grandma of 16 would wear… chuck the jumper!!! The trousers wouldn’t be so bad with a nice white polar neck jumper or a white blouse (a nice one not a work one). Stay away from those colours they drown you try more colour combos like navy and beige or burgundy and cream old money type style you can google it :-)

clarissadavenport · Yesterday 22:02

Are you wearing shoes with velcro fastenings like an old person in their eighties?? Nice figure. The jumper is heinous. Stop wearing brown.

I doubt it will come from pretending to be someone else through 🤷‍♀️
When you are this age but desperately try to dress “young” (informed by instagram reels that push on you wide trousers and tucked in shirts…) this inevitably just screams insecure.
One of the benefits of being older is that you can absolutely have your own style!

I could have written this! I’m 40 and I feel frumpy and old 😅 - you are definitely NOT a minger though, please don’t say that!

i feel like I don’t have a style. All I wear is leggings and sweatshirts. I’m rubbish at my hair and I do wear make up but haven’t changed it since I was in my 20s (think black eyeliner all the way) 🙈

I have big boobs and a small waist and then a bit of a tummy. Everything I wear seems to make me look top heavy and loose tops always sort of tent out making me look bigger than I am.

Recently I had a day out planned with my glam friends. I was dreading it. I typed in to google “32gg bra, size 10, small waist, chubby tummy - what can I wear to make me look slim and not top heavy?”

and Google came back with what I should be wearing! It was amazing! I bought an outfit like it suggested and it made me look slim and evened out my boobs so I didn’t look like a potato! (It suggested tailored trousers and a tight fitting square necked top by the way).

google can be so useful. If you type in your body shape and what style/colours you like and areas you’d rather hide it can help you dress for your shape and suggest clothing that suits you and accentuates all your good bits! Then you can find everyday/comfy clothes in these styles too, not just for wearing out.

I can’t help with make up tips or hair tips or anything I’m afraid as I’m awful at both but hopefully google can give you some ideas of cheap fashion for wearing day to day that really highlights the bits of your body you like and make you feel better about yourself!

At your age, in a comfy relationship with an increasingly hot hottie? dress how you want, be you, be happy.

Everyone saying buy some funky trainers or docs is well confused, because the majority of them wear them with a nice smart m&S linen shirt or something from Zara and it marks you out as a school run mum and basically try hard with no actual personality.

Just wear what you like, whatever feels good, I love that jumper, chuck it with something skinny for sexy or flowy for relaxed cool.

How you feeling and look may be tied with your general and metabolic health. Menopause and metabolic dysfunction change the way a body stores fat.

I would optimise your metabolic function and make sure you're focusing on exercise (if you're not already) before you try anything else.

Have a look at the freshwell app (it's free and brilliant)

I reached the same stage as the OP, through the opposite process. Over time, without getting new clothes, I just felt less and less like myself. Now I've had a glow-up, helped by my teenagers, who did not suggest I look young, more just a bit updated with nicer fabrics; I feel more like myself and can walk into any situation with confidence. I feel more like my old self and less fussed about what I look like when I'm out and about.

Ophy83 · Yesterday 22:18

I am a soft summer too.. the colours you are wearing look too sludgy/warm for the palette. Sticking to softer cool blues, greens and pinks will immediately look better.

The other thing I would recommend - particularly if you don't like to wear makeup - is getting your eyebrows and eyelashes tinted if they have faded with age. You probably need to do it once a month, but saves having to bother with eye makeup every day. Combined with a rosy lip balm and you will look like yourself just a bit fresher. Maybe a bit of Jones Road tinted balm on your face if you are looking too pale.

PyongyangKipperbang · Yesterday 22:18

You look like my sister physically. She is a size 18 but like you, has great legs and is in proportion. If you took that jumper off I am betting you have an hourglass figure. She has embraced herself and has a confidence I have never had (size 10 and I wear black as black is easy!).

Best advice I can give is to ask that friend you have that you envy for being effortlessly stylish (we all have one!) to take you shopping. When my sister takes me shopping she makes me try on things I would never look twice at and I always look wonderful.

With big boobs, dont for for anything that you think hides them cos it doesnt. I used to have JJ boobs (reduction since) and a v neck works best.

I very much dress to my own style. There’s nothing wrong with a glow up and getting out of a rut, sometimes change is a good thing!

I think you have a lovely figure OP. I agree with the above the perimenopause was pretty brutal for me. I have made small changes, a mediternaean diet, more moderate excercises and have gradually added in some hair and beauty products. The ordinary have some lovely serums, which won't break the bank.

I am starting to feel better and taking more of an interest in clothes again. I'm just wary of slipping back.

outerspacepotato · Yesterday 22:40

What I'd do is elongate. You don't look a size 18, but your clothes look a bit too big on you.

V necks. Longer necklaces. Monochromatic dressing. Tighter fits. Some width at the bottom. Sneaker or pointier toe shoe or boot.

If you're caregiving much of the day, try some yoga pants, maybe with a bit of a flare bottom. You can move with ease, you're comfortable, nothing's going to rip or fall down. Black or navy or deep charcoal. Get some long sleeve v neck tees. Everything easy to wash and dry. For everyday and no caregiving, try some wider leg pants and a turtleneck or v neck. Get a decent bra.

Eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, at least a half hour of exercise daily and lift at least twice a week, spend time outdoors, retinol, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Basic, but with caregiving responsibilities, time can be limited.
