I know exactly how you feel. My DH gets better looking every year. How can that be?? I, on the other hand, look like a big, old hag.

I'm 100% sure that this is partly because men can grow nice distinguished beards to disguise their jowls...

thank you all for your replies. im sitting here having a wee chuckle to myself because i thought this was one of my better days being dressed lol. I've only just bought the jumper so you see what a disaster I am. I will take on board all the make up advice and head into town this weekend see what i can buy. Im a size 18 can ye recommend any online people to follow to see if i can get some inspo?

You look slimmer than that, and shapely. The clothes don't flatter you though. Lots of good ideas above.

I need a nice bushy beard, good suggestion.

Unless clothes make you happy, I'd not pay so much mind to them as has been recommended so far. Because I get the feeling you feel bad about your appearance in general rather than just that you're not dressed fashionably?
If that's the case, them I'd start with the foundations rather than the top coat.
Good nutrition, excercise and relaxation. Weights and yoga for posture and muscle tone. Anything you need dentistry wise, get it done. Start a good skin care routine, and get a fantastic haircut.
Once the basics are in place, doesn't matter if you're not a 'current' or you dress for comfort, you'll still look and feel better. And most of these things bring health benefits too.

NChannnnge · Yesterday 18:12

Can I just say I can tell from your posts why your husband is attracted to you - you are great craic!!

If you have a bit of money to throw at this many makeup brands like MAC and Charlotte Tilbury will do a makeover or makeup lesson where you get the value to spend on makeup, e.g. spend 30 or 60 on the MAC one and they’ll do you up (tell them to go natural or you’ll get a fright given you’re not used to it) and you can use that money to buy something. I have always spent a little more on things like skincare and foundation and highlighter/blush and if and when I do buy cheaper Boots stuff it’s lipgloss, mascara.

Re clothes, do some research on your body type and colour profile. It’s so hard to tell from that photo but I’d suggest some more structured trousers like cords (come into fashion again) or tailored elasticated ones and trying a tucked in top.

TheWiseLilacScroller · Yesterday 18:12

Charlenedickens · Yesterday 16:33

The outfit is not very flattering and quite muddy colours, it’s also quite dated,

trouser style now is wide leg or straight, jumpers tend to be either fitted or slouchy and over sized.

howver the jumper could work well with a lovely pair of wide leg trousers, maybe in a rich wine colour, but I will be honest, it’s not good,

Who says that it’s ’not Good’?
It doesn’t matter what the style is ‘now’, styles go in and out of season and in a few months something else will be ‘in’. Silly to be a slave to all that nonsense.Wide leg trousers flapping round in the rain look silly and are so uncomfortable, but that’s just my opinion!
We should all wear what we like and feel comfortable in.

Hayley1256 · Yesterday 18:13

Where is the outfit from OP? My DD 78 year old grandma would wear that and has a lot of stuff like it. Have a look at some Google images of modern classics thing to help and go into shops and try some things on. So my version (late 30s) of your outfit would be a nice sweatshirt pairs with wide leg jeans or trousers and some trainers or ballet flats

HughManity · Yesterday 18:13

You're not a minger but you're a good sport.

Frillysweetpea · Yesterday 18:13

Get your colours done as it's amazing how much fresher you look in the right colours. You don't necessarily need make up when your clothes are in harmony with your own colouring but a lot of analysts will advise you on make up, too. Some will also do a style make over but you could just book a free appointment with the personal stylist at your nearest JL or other department store next time you plan to refresh your wardrobe.

You are not a minger! I like your clothes, they have personality. I’ve seen a few people recommending Gazelles, why must we all dress and look the same and only that is considered fashionable? It’s so boring.

Villagetoraiseachild · Yesterday 18:16

Good luck Op.
Was going to suggest going to a John Lewis as they have advisers to help with new styles, if you are near one. They are free and no obligation to buy.
A general guideline is that horizontal stripes make you look wider, so farewell to that top.
Boots do sp 50 foundation and they will analyse best colour for you.

WitchOfTheFireworks · Yesterday 18:19

You don't look a size 18. One tip though, don't wear horizontal stripes, generally they make people look wider.
Personally I wouldn't recommend mns jumpers, they seem to not have enough length in them and seem very 'aggy'.
You need to find a style that suits you. You could go to a personal styling session at John Lewis which is free just for advice. You don't actually have to buy anything there and then, its just to give you an idea.
A correctly sized bra is always a good place to start as clothes will always hang better.

Are you sure you are an 18 and not just WEARING 18? You look slim from this pic.

Agreed. How tall are you OP?

The Op is asking for advice to update her look. No one would have made suggestions if she was perfectly happy with her choice of outfit.

141mum · Yesterday 18:28

Change the trousers for jeans, katch me, online, do great jeans, definitely size down though, get a belt, u could then tuck a jumper in at side or front, trainers or loafers
makeup…. Mixson tinted moisturiser Is great, touch of blurring powder, long wear lip stain, mascara, get eyebrows tinted. The makeup will take 5 mins.i work from home and do mine everyday. Makes me feel better

WonderingWanda · Yesterday 18:31

I use Pinterest to get ideas for outfits.

I think that the combo of that jumper and trousers together don't don't work. The trousers would look ok with a cropped white t shirt and some chunky trainers.

Maybe try some barrel leg jeans, they are very flattering. Think about layers. Baggy bottoms with a tighter top but maybe a baggier layer on top.

TragicTess · Yesterday 18:32

Following closely as v.similar indeed…

Dumbledora8 · Yesterday 18:35

Nah op, I think you are being hard on yourself. You have good figure. Can't see your face but I bet you are gorgeous. Be kind to yourself. There's something beautiful about aging and it is a blessing that some people don't get xx

Tomorrowisjustanotherday · Yesterday 18:35

There’s lots of Facebook reels to do with styling which i now follow. I made a Facebook group which is just me in it which I forward the things I like or think are worth remembering. (although some of its slightly overwhelming because it’s don’t know what really would work for me). Trying to find the time to go shopping and picks some of those looks off the rail and try on in the changing room.

id say popping some Lippy on is an easy one. Find a Jean style that properly suits you and then some tops, build in a jacket, scarf, etc.

im planning on looking fab darling by Christmas by purchasing a look slowly and trying to build my existing wardrobe into it as well. I’m definitely thinking of going to a stylist when funds allow.

I think it’s fun and have already been complimented on one casual outfit I regularly wear.

DoneAndNotDusted · Yesterday 18:37

Agree with others, you don't look like a size 18 at all!
There are a lot of "sludgy" colours around this autumn, which don't suit everyone. We can't see your colouring here, but you may suit cooler tones as already suggested.
You're not a minger (autocorrect changed this to ginger, are you a redhead by any chance?!); nobody needs to be saying that about themselves.

Illegally18 · Yesterday 18:38

atinyrayofpitchblacksunshine · Yesterday 16:23

I like your shoes and trousers! Try tucking/folding the jumper under so it sits higher on your waist, and a white round neck tshirt really helps under any jumper as it brightens the face. I’m a home bird and can’t be bothered with make up on/off so use a moisturiser and then a tiny bit of benefit stain for my cheeks each day. Earrings, necklace and rings and that makes me feel like I’ve got armour on.
clean hair and tidy nails make a big difference too. Good luck op and tbh I’d choose comfort over anything now a days!!

You like the shoes? They're dreadful!

Happyjoe · Yesterday 18:42

I am shocked you're an 18 because you look like you have a great figure. Nothing wrong with the jumper or the trousers - just not together. The jumper would look ace with some kickflare jeans or something like that (clogs would look great with the kickflare too). The trousers be fine with a nice black cami and a funky cardigan or a cute scarf. Your clothes are fine, just got to try out some new ways of putting them together perhaps!

Other than that, go shopping, have fun. Go to the hairdressers and ask their advice what would look good on you. Just make sure you enjoy yourself and don't put pressure on yourself, it's only fashion! Confidence is the most powerful accessory of all!

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · Yesterday 18:43

I think the jumper is fine for a country walk or if its particularly freezing. I probably wouldn't wear it for a night out tho 😀I think you look absollutely fine and would just feel better with a bit of a shopping trip. I have by no means got it sussed. and writing this, I think I need to work on this myself
but for what its worth...

Department stores like JL and even Monsoon have personal stylists and when choosing what to wear to a wedding in Monsoon one came up to me and just started picking out things. She was absolutely brilliant and gave me loads of tips. I tried on things I would have passed over and they really worked.
I think that would be better spending money with advice than chancing it.. then you'd be better prepared for solo shopping after. When searching I think of outfits like a menu, at home, out in town, evening out etc. Recently went through the wardrobe and chucked a lot, found things I'd forgotten, but it will show you where the gaps are.

Hair.. always a boost if you get it cut. My hair is a right pain but The best thing I ever bought was a rotating hot air hair brush which does a great job of sorting out hair in a hurry.
Make up. I was drastically disappointed with Laura Geller. Boots 7 is 100 times better quality and cheaper too.
If starting out consider department store counters or Boots ( since you won't want to spend a fortune initially) You may need to make an appointment. But I found they were so helpful. My friend booked a make up lesson in Selfridges for her birthday and was very happy because they gave her lots of tuition. We only found out because everyone was complementing her on her make up. Liza Eldridge has lots of how to vids for various age groups..
Nails. Never used to bother much but recently discovered French make Manicurist..and have been using one of their treatment and natural polish kits and they are really great. Easy to put on and lasting. Hate Rubber gloves but have got a box of thinner ones for housework and painting and stuff.
Shoes. you lost me there. I just go for comfy ones. Im much more into boots atm
That's all I can think of, but Black Friday is coming up. I tend to look things up online and then go and try it on. Saves a lot of time.
You. I used to believe get your vitamins from food, but now I think they are essential. You are probably working hard at caring.. so you need to carve out some time for yourself - that's the best glow up you can get. Best of luck. Come back and tell us what works x

Some of the comments here 🤯

OP if you are an 18, you wear it well! You have got a great body to dress!

Re make up, try eborian CC cream. It’s quite light and might be a good base. A dewy setting spray can give a glow. I have old dry skin and elf setting spray has transformed my lifeless face.
