I found them uncommonly unflattering, but then I have quite narrow hips so maybe it was missing the balancing opportunity.

I don't think op's hips are particularly wide.

But her shoulders are so the trousers outside line should flow not pull in like the skinny trousers do giving an inverted triangle
A jumper at hip bone length but with a rib hem NOT clingy but skimming will balance
Im not being rude but I didnt even notice tbe Ops bust because of the expanse of tummy
She doesnt even have a round tummy but its the first thing the eye is drawn to
Will try to find a picture

I don’t Get the good figure comments, you can’t see the ops figure,

You're right, she's wearing loose clothing in the pic. But she looks slim and in proportion me.

ThisWiseRobin · Yesterday 20:10

Have you had a look around Pinterest. There are some great sites with tips on how to dress for your shape and age.

Nylonflares · Yesterday 20:10

Get a great cut and colour, and get your nails done. Builder gel is great. Get your brows shaped and tinted.

make up every day. IT Cosmetics, your skin but better. Elf contour bronzer. Lipstick is a must. Find a natural colour that suits your skin tone. Practise eye makeup to suit you

You don't need to start wearing make up if you never have done before. I don't, never have and I am not a minger.

I would start by trying to identify the styles you like and more importantly, don't like before trying to change your style. You risk getting lots of things that don't work together if you don't have an overall view of what you'd like to look like. You could try to find people online that are a similar size, shape and age whose style you like and build from there.

A simple change for now would be to go for a more modern trouser shape, and a jumper/top that fits - that one looks too big and doesn't flatter you at all.

Edited

I agree. If someone has somehow got to 55 without make up, I can’t see any reason to start now.
I think the clothes you’re wearing are Seasalt? Some people might think you have a bit of a ‘mannish’ build with broad shoulders and long straight legs. If you want to look more ‘feminine’ you need to find a make of trousers which are properly long enough. Your feet seem rather large? I guess it’s hard to find ‘feminine’ shoes if you have larger feet? What size do you take?

StarCourt · Yesterday 20:14

Hi @BitterHarvest I’ve just started using a bit of make up and bought this sheer foundation stick from Charlotte Tilbury. It’s really lovely, gives you a little glow without heaviness, I also had my eyelashes lifted and tinted and wear a tinted lip balm.

Re Laura Geller - QVC is the place! If you don’t like it you can return it within I think 30 days for a full refund. You do have to pay the postage but that’s better than just buying stuff and not using it.

Sixty days now mate! And at the moment that’s extended to 31 January!

I know far too much about qvc for it to be altogether healthy for me/my purse but thry are the best company I’ve ever given my money to 🥰

Bloody hell you need the hide of a rhino to ask for advice on here!

True, but the advice is solidly helpful.

You look like me. I’m a soft summer too, but I hate those pastel colours, I’m drawn to sludgy and muted with the odd splash of jewel colour. I think that jumper could work over a big skirt or long sleeved dress, with boots. The trousers could work with a more fitted/ slinkier top in the same colour. But not together. You need to take bulk out of your top half. Long sleeved scoop necks with a ballet style wrap, so yes to pp suggestion of fluid, light layers. V necks are good.Try and wear the same colour on top and bottom. You are breaking up your person at the worst point . You probably won’t believe me, but mini dresses will look great on you. You do have a really good figure. I’ve got Elomi bras, I’m a 36 ff. if your bras are old or cheap, buy better, Freya are also brilliant. Elasticated waist trousers are great for people with slim legs and hips, but thick waists. You will be a size 14 in those. Wider trousers will balance your body.
I’ve just had my hair cut for the first time in years. It went from a curly mess, always tied back to a really chic artfully undone short bob. I just went to a genius and said do what you want. I’ve got those clogs and I love them, but keep them for inside, I’m suggesting you try to mainly dress in one colour, but that doesn’t include your feet. There are so many fantastic trainers out there, start having fun, try stealing some from your kids, one of them must have the same size feet.
And buy at least one good coat . I love Scandi rainwear. It costs a fortune, but you live in Belfast ,you’ll get the wear. Sometimes Next Clearance has Didriksons, Rains and Ilse Jacobsen in your size(and its a great place to buy some size 14 pull up trousers) Christ I sound bossy!

Missing the point of the thread, how is a mum that works at home the same thing as a housewife?

I think OP means her job is running the household.. ?

RumPidgeon · Yesterday 20:51

You have a fantastic figure! I would take a look at the current M&S collection to find some bits. Their recent items are great.

If you need help with picking colours, could you Google a colour consultant near you? My friend does it and she made my appearance glow with the colour palette she matched to my hair and skin tone. I understand there are online apps but the in-person consultation was worth it.

Think of quality over quantity- look on Vinted to find some beautiful cashmere jumpers or wool trousers (once you can figure out your size).

I would recommend a beauty consultation at your local or bigger Boots store. They were ever so kind and sent me home with quite a few samples before I went back to pick what I felt comfortable with. I really highly recommend this product to set the tone for my skin, I often wear it on its own:

Boots Perfecting Primer

Good luck @BitterHarvest ☺️

Take a full selfie in natural light with your hair down put that and a full length picture, your height, weight, dress size into AI and ask it for your colour season and what clothes styles would suit your shape it's been great at giving me some basic guidelines around colours that compliment me and the best jeans shape for my figure etc!

This is great advice, I'm definitely going to do this.
My problem is my trousers, I wear them a lot, but I never seem to look right. I'm 5ft 3in and a size 8-10 but they just look dated in comparison to what I see online especially baggy/looser style. I'm confident with my hair and make up, but definitely need to get an opinion from AI.

LumpkinPumpkin · Yesterday 21:07

@BitterHarvest get yourself on instagram, search ‘midsize’ and start following people you like the look of. Mumsnet is full of cashmere this, Cos that, M&S blah blah blah… you don’t HAVE to subscribe to the middle class mum aesthetic of that isn’t your taste 😂

Elsvieta · Yesterday 21:12

Book a class with a professional to advise on makeup - well worth it.

Yay, two people like me ie no make up. I thought I was the only one.

Chewbecca · Yesterday 21:36

You say you had your colours done - are you following them now?
It makes a huge difference to how 'well' I look.

Chewbecca · Yesterday 21:37

Make up wise, a swipe of 'brown' mascara and a neutral lipstick is good enough for a starter. Your colours person would have suggested some lipstick shades I think?

summitfever · Yesterday 21:40

BitterHarvest · Yesterday 19:41

Yes! I love (loved) seasalt things trousers are white stuff. When they first came to Belfast I spent a fortune because I love their stuff but hey it’s all going on Vinted!

To be fair the jumper could look better if it actually fit you, it looks far too big and baggy. Look at all that spare material under your armpit. If it was hugging your figure it would be nice, it’s the cut that’s offensive not the top 🙃

BuddyForeigner · Yesterday 21:41

OP there is nothing more pathetic than a mid fifties woman trying to look fashionable or wear makeup out of nowhere. God help me with the helpful posts suggesting adidas gazelles and the wide leg trousers 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
You are having a mid life identity crisis that is purely psychological in nature. You don’t need to look like someone else. You don’t need to start wearing make up that you never wore before. Please stay yourself and enjoy life. Nobody cares or judges you.

Indeed, no-one should feel they have to wear make up. However, I’ve found that part of getting older is losing colour in my face and the definition I had when I was younger. Without make up I look more ‘washed out’, than ‘fresh-faced’ - and I think that’s true of many women over 45ish to varying extents.

Just small amounts of make up judiciously applied to brighten and define can make a big difference. If you’re nervous, start with a small amount and increase gradually until you’ve got the brightened and defined level that works for you.
