I never wore make up and i think i need to start. but since many of my days are spent only in the house or caring for elderly mum i dont know when to put it on, Also whats a casual but polished style now adays with out looking like the local free P pastors wife?

Get your colours done as it's amazing how much fresher you look in the right colours. You don't necessarily need make up when your clothes are in harmony with your own colouring but a lot of analysts will advise you on make up, too. Some will also do a style make over but you could just book a free appointment with the personal stylist at your nearest JL or other department store next time you plan to refresh your wardrobe.

I was going to suggest this also.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · Yesterday 19:36

I like what you have on. Except for the jumper. A shirt tucked in, nice belt and you’d look smart/casual and it’s an easy wear. Cold? Pop on a tank top. If you never wear make up mascara and pink Vaseline are a game changer 😊

Nofeckingway · Yesterday 19:39

I did laugh at your comparison with a Free Presbyterian pastor wife , but think they are more inclined to twinsets and tweed .

Think the jumper is too baggy on you . I tend to do the same and it can make me feel frumpy and look bigger than I am. Not many many look good in that colour brown. I would wear those with a crisp white shirt , loads of them around chunky necklace and earrings. It really makes a difference if you normally only wear jewellery for special occasions. But at our age , every good healthy day is special. Don't save anything for " best ".

So many good suggestions here and I am looking them up too.

I follow @ stylingwithRebecca on Instagram because she is the same weight, shape, and size as me and also loves jeans.

You don’t look a size 18 from your picture at all! Search on instagram for ‘midsize’ and you should get some people who might look like you with a bit more practice.

I like your jumper- is it the fruity jumper from seasalt? I also follow brands I like on instagram to see styling suggestions by real people as well as the company’s curated pictures. Often people #brand in their photos. You can get ideas of how to style something that might not have occurred to you.

Also echo pp who said please don’t call yourself a minger! It isn’t true and you don’t deserve to feel like that. You’re lovely, you just need to see it.

Yes! I love (loved) seasalt things trousers are white stuff. When they first came to Belfast I spent a fortune because I love their stuff but hey it’s all going on Vinted!

here’s my 50ps worth of glow up steps:

  • get a good hairdresser and go every 6-8 weeks.
  • skin care: any cleanser will do; moisturizer is the opposite- get a good one and use it twice a day. I like Avene hydra gel (glass pot white lid) and a cheaper option that I also find excellent is Midnight serum by Loreal, black tall bottle.
  • fake tan. Everyone and I mean everyone looks better with some colour. Dove gradual tan is very good to start with- the colour is light and the fade is excellent. Apply all over body, you can’t really go wrong if you rub it well and wash your hands twice afterwards.

i think if you have good skin, good hair and a some sort of pretty, you can wear anything and it would look nice - contrary to previous posts I don’t think the issue is the outfit; you can make trousers and a slouchy jumper look good IF you have lovely hair and glowing skin. These come somewhat easily from a great hairdresser and a bottle of fake tan.

The other thing which you can do which I do every couple of years and find excellent is have a make up tutorial at a MAC makeup counter. Tell them you want an everyday, easy make up look, they’ll make you one and teach you how to do it yourself. It’s excellent.

small things I also do that might be awkward are: roll my face with a facial roller to massage / tone, some kind of peeling/rejuvinating face mask once a week or so, drink as much water as I can, eat lots of veggies, gym and watch my weight. I also have hair extensions on occasion and keep my own hair long - a satin pillow case also excellent and easy 👌 good luck @BitterHarvest post an update when you start your glow up!! Xoxox

What is a 'Free P pastor's wife?'

InMy40sEra · Yesterday 19:45

Try tucking the top into the trousers (or a loose half in, half out) and it will look much better

Mycatsfeetsmell · Yesterday 19:46

HughManity · Yesterday 19:16

Ignore the boxy wide jumper suggestion - it won't do your figure any favours.
Look at sites like Me+Em and get M&S lookalikes.

Wrong
She has wider shoulders, she needs balance with her hips otherwise she has this tummy shaped jumper

Oh is that what they are for. I just really couldn't work them out when I tried them.

SixtySomething · Yesterday 19:51

I do find posts like this very difficult. I think you should post all of you or none of you.You don’t look like a housewife anyway, whatever that is. 🧐

She's a 38G or did you miss that? Plus the selfie is taken at an unflattering angle.

IYKYK

in Northern Ireland which is where the OP is from, there is a religious order called the Free Presbyterians. Ian Paisley was head of the church in his day. The pastor’s wives are typically very plainly dressed with sober social lives.

Nofeckingway · Yesterday 19:52

@BillieWiper I pretty sure OP is referring to the Free Presbyterian Church , a particularly conservative branch of Protestantism in Northern Ireland . Very apt as the ladies are usually of the old fashioned vicar wife mode .

Missing the point of the thread, how is a mum that works at home the same thing as a housewife?

It’s a working woman who has been indoctrinated by the patriarchy to also do the vast majority of the domestic work.

Aww ok cool. Thank you. I have protestant NI distant family (so should probably have known?) and I certainly am familiar with Ian Paisley.

Yeah you'd definitely want to be going for a slightly more rock n roll vibe than him and his pals! 😂

Calliopespa · Yesterday 19:57

Also OP be kind to yourself. Getting older isn't easy. Everything starts to take off in a disobedient direction: outwards when it was in, downwards instead of up. Hair that used to be luxuriant thins and begins to grow thickly in the wrong places. It is time women started to be kind to themselves and each other about this.

You aren't a minger and your DH probably seems "ding dong" to you because you love him.

Lifestooshort71 · Yesterday 19:58

I picked up a good tip this week. Try wearing a higher neck white t-shirt under everything so that it peeks out at the top - lifts your face and gives you a bit of voom.

Calliopespa · Yesterday 19:59

Mycatsfeetsmell · Yesterday 19:54

No

I found them uncommonly unflattering, but then I have quite narrow hips so maybe it was missing the balancing opportunity.

I don't think op's hips are particularly wide.

This is not the advice you need

Definitely not shirt tucked in and no no to a tank top

for casual I like balloon trousers, comfy but fashionable. I wear them with air force ones by Nike. And a neat fitting or loose top, I’ll link

mum working at home i.e housewife is hard work and exhausting 😅 x

why have you decided to make these changes?
i am curious?

i am wondering if you need to love yourself more
love who you are on the inside
as a person
your qualities
strengths etc
and everything else about yourself.

seems like you want to be more attractive physically appealing

are you doing it for yourself

OsfameronTanamoril · Yesterday 20:02

I can't really tell what shape the OP is, tbh, because of the angle of the pic plus her clothes.

babasaclover · Yesterday 20:05

@BitterHarvestyou are nowhere near a size 18 you need tighter fitting clothes your shape could be much better shown off emphasise the bits you do have

Nylonflares · Yesterday 20:06

balloon trousers size down

scoop top

loose top very flattering though

Nikes

asics

and buy a designer scarf, like a McQueen one, goes with everything and adds style
