How can I wean my mother off the Damart catalogue

OK, she is 80. She also does not "do" online shopping and cannot use the internet so is limited in choice to mail order or what shops exist in her town which sell clothes (small M&S, TK Maxx, Tesco, Morrisons, New Look, Matalan). She is not short of cash.

Visited today and she was wearing the most godawful old lady mint green, acyrlic, zippy up cardigan. I said "Oh that's new mum, haven't seen that before" and she announces it's from the Damart catalogue. If you've ever wondered who buys the "comfortable slacks" and similar items advertised in the national trust magazine, that's my mum.

I don't expect her to be high fashion. Sibling and I often buy clothes for her for birthdays and Christmas, sibling recently bought her a striped breton cotton top which she appears to like. She obviously wants to be comfortable and I do get that. But there is comfortable... and there is the Damart catalogue.

I bumped into a friend of hers recently - similar age - wearing Adidas trainers, black trousers, lambswool jumper. Nothing high fashion or out there. My mum has very odd ideas about clothes and appearance (people over 40 shouldn't wear jeans, women over 30 shouldn't have long hair, if you were meant to have holes in your earlobes you'd be born with them, pop socks are a perfectly acceptable item of clothing) and weaning her off this abomination of a catalogue is going to be tough. Any ideas?

I suggested it to DW ,green slacks, baffies, floral cardigan from the free catalogue in a newspaper.
A resounding fuck off
She's 58

My mum's committed to Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Cotton Traders. Both cater for teeny tiny nannas who just want to be comfortable and in multiple layers. I really hate a lot of what she wears, but she probably hates my clothes and I don't want her interfering with my choices.

If that’s the biggest problem you have with your 80 year old mother you’re very lucky! I was caring for my mum at that age and she died at 84.

I think I need to get myself a damart catalogue now that looks fine to me.

I agree, it’s nice!

haggisaggis · Yesterday 21:37

While I think your mum is entitled to wear whatever she wants and if that is clothing from the Damart catalogue that is absolutely fine - my elderly mother would order from https://www.cotswoldcollections.com/ They have a catalogue you can send away for so she would not need to order online.

Ive got lots of ads coming up for Damart now. Some nice bits.

You are right there is nothing wrong with that cardigan, It is something my mum would wear she likes to be warm finds buttons a faff and it is a good length.

Denim4ever · Yesterday 21:44

Damart is not that bad, likewise EWM. You can't really expect 80+ year olds to go for fashion trends and blacks, browns and dark colours are often not what they want.

Lands End and Cotton Traders are ok, but quite expensive and sorting good things out from the dreadful is no easier. But, it's all about what she wants to wear not what you like OP.

CatchyRocksonSong · Yesterday 21:50

really....who are you to tell her what to buy and wear

Leave her alone. Buying clothing as an older person can be really difficult. Honestly, comfort becomes more important.

I’m 80 and no, it’s not difficult. and comfort isn’t always the priority.

Why aren't you answering posters questions?

My dad as he is approaching 80 has started shopping almost exclusively at the army navy surplus store (and Skechers) , DS has started making jokes about not being able to see him because he's camouflaged 😂
I know my dad has some lovely clothes in his wardrobe that still fit him, but it's his choice!

my mum shops in damart because she gets money off, she gets free stuff with her next order, and because she can pay by cheque.

she cannot be trusted on the inter web.
she’d end up in a scam.

so i just let her crack on. i just post the envelopes.
none of the free stuff is nice. the clothes are overpriced to start with so a discount only aligns them with normal prices. but at least she can pay easily without my help.

I was just pointing out that there is something he buys outside of the army and navy shop

Is that compulsory?

Why the sarcasm?

What a nasty thread.
Good luck when you're 80, @KassandraOfSparta.
I hope people are nicer about your taste and style!

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 22:22

I think you've got a horrible attitude to your mum’s clothing choices. My mum adored Damart and bought loads of things from their catalogue. It gave her great pleasure when her orders arrived. None of her clothes were to my taste at all but I would never have thought to criticise her for her choices or style, let alone start a thread abkut her on an internet forum! Maybe she thinks you wear awful clothes, but hopefully has enough tact and discretion not to try to change what you wear.

Denim4ever · Yesterday 22:23

Re online - I would recommend that all over 80s don't go paper free for utilities and bank statements. It makes everything a zillion times easier when they pass away. The info is right there not 3 fraught phone calls away

Conniebygaslight · Yesterday 22:23

Bloody hell shes 80 not 8. She’s not a child and can wear what she wants!
You sound like Amanda from SoHa.
