Yes or no to lounge sets?

This would be for mainly wearing in the house, but might pop to the shops in it. It's not the sort of thing I usually go for but thought it would look better than pyjamas when someone pops round unexpectedly, or when I want to be comfy at home but still look stylish enough to have a guest round.

Are they stylish or are they tacky? I'm 53 if that's relevant? https://www.marksandspencer.com/modal-blend-sandwash-cropped-sweatshirt/p/clp61227265

What exactly do you mean by 'do some exercise' ?

Please ignore this poster OP - we're here to discuss fashion!

WhoMeLooksAway · 28/09/2026 16:34

I think they tend to look better when the top is a bit longer line - more flattering. Real non-model women aren't done any favours by shorter tops that break the line of the body in an odd place. Clinging material for most real people looks more flattering if the bottom is partially if not fully covered.

Also, struggling to see how the matching set looks less chic than the mismatched set- these are both from Reiss. Also, Jeans and a t-shirt is nowhere near as cosy and comfy to wear as a fleece lined jogging set with elasticated waist. Jeans have a non-stretch waist band and the cotton feels cool against the skin compared to jersey fabric. Have also ordered a velour lounge set from pour moi. It's more like PJ's although wouldn't wear out of the house but won't sleep in it either as prefer cotton or modal for sleeping.

Is that Reiss set jersey fabric rather than knitted?

I would add to the comparison with jeans and T shirt that as well as being more comfortable, fleece backed jersey co-ords (sweatshirt fabric) tend to be a lot warmer and easier to launder. If I’m at home all day then I don’t want to have to put the heating on when I can wear warm, cosy clothing.

Ok, they arrived this morning! Here I am wearing both sets I ordered- sorry they look unnatural- I used AI to remove my background as didn’t want anyone to recognise my house.

The matching set feels better quality and thicker peachier material, the mismatched set is thinner- which looks best?

I asked DH- he said he wouldnt go out with me wearing either of them😂

I like the matched top and bottoms but I’m not keen on that colour choice. I think that the chocolate and taupe colour ways are both nicer, and also come as a matching set. On point of style, I’m not keen on round necks, a style with a hood, or a half or full zip all look nicer, I think. But that’s just me.

BillieWiper · 28/09/2026 17:21

I don't like the ones in the link. It's like what's it trying to be?
Is it comfortable clothing that isn't trying to be stylish? Because it doesn't look comfortable. And it's not stylish regardless.

Pyjamas, tracksuit, a vest and baggy pants, a neglige, a t shirt dress, even a onesie...I'd rather any of those than this.

PinkEasterbunny · 28/09/2026 17:59

There is a very recent thread about smart but comfy trousers, probably for WFH, I will try to find it. I swear by M&S jersey wide leg trousers, £20, which you can easily dress up or down for lounge wear or nipping to the shops

Its here:

I still wear my Juicy Couture set which is still going strong after more than 20 years. It must be made of titanium, I’m amazed about it.

having said that, there are a few things in this thread I don’t understand. Like if the point of a lounge set is to be comfy at home why are some people saying you need to elevate it with make up and a blow dry - are you all doing that at home when there is nobody around? Am I missing something?

and I agree with the posters who say that the women who look good in this look are young and pretty with good make up skills. My daughter looks gorgeous in this look. But if wore it in an airport I would look as wide as I am tall and like I had escaped some kind of institution.

bugalugs45 · 28/09/2026 18:59

I have several of these and do leave the house in them , usually to walk the dog , but I do feel ‘ slobby ‘ truth be told . However I’m 47, menopausal and fast running out of fucks to give so there’s that 😂

I always shower, style hair and put on some make up each morning. It makes me feel prepared. It also means I’m “done” if I want to pop out, or if someone calls round. But I know this will polarise opinion

pelara · 28/09/2026 20:33

Right, that's decided then, I will NEVER open a thread on S+B. I'm just not that brave and I cry easily.

ThatLemonBee · 28/09/2026 21:03

Isn’t that what leggings and t shirts are for ? That looks very Chavvy imo

MidnightMeltdown · 28/09/2026 21:08

Yes for wearing at home (a million times less chavy than wearing pjs during the day)

No for going out in (unless you’re just popping to put the bin out)

Me too. I work full time out of the house so days when I'm at home and not going out somewhere are very rare anyway. Loungewear is something for changing into after work for me, or on a rare weekend when there's nowhere I need to go.

I always do hair and makeup every morning even if it's a day at home as I enjoy the process and feel ready for any eventuality that way.

These matching " buttery feel" sets are everywhere in the most expensive places like Varley and Spanx to cheapie ones from eg New Look. They are all made of the same stuff. In fact I can't think of a shop that doesn't have them. I love the feel of them. The tops tend to be a short length and either round neck or 1/4 zip. They're great for at home or outside.

Greenandyellowday · 29/09/2026 01:43

Was slightly disappointed, as I thought a "lounge set" might be a term for the "three-piece-suite" of old, with ensuing entertaining "class" conflict row. Ah well.

Might I refer you to the "my son wasn't allowed into a venue in his trackies" thread?

StarlightLady · 29/09/2026 08:04

I have a few dresses (loose and comfy) that l mainly use for around the house, which l happily answer the door in or pop to the shops.

I've had a few of these too - absolutely fine for Tesco Express!

That’s how I feel. No fucks given!

I’m happily about to wear one of my matching joggers and hoodies to the gym with the gym kit underneath.

I wear lounge sets from Varley. The Doublesoft range are so soft, cosy and comfortable to wear at home, for a dog walk or popping to the shops. I
wear jewellery with them if I’m going out to smarten them up a bit. They’re not cheap but so nice!

I adore the look of the Varley loungewear sets but just so pricy. Is it worth it?

Holidaymodeon · 29/09/2026 12:38

I’m disabled, I actually love the idea of smart looking ‘loungewear’, I don’t want to be in a tracksuit all the time and hugely embraced onesies when they were a thing although going to the toilet in deep winter or in a hurry was never fun and it’s tricky to get them over my shoulders nowa.
id love to find a decent lounge set which does up at the front instead of overhead.
I would just like to feel ‘dressed’ if people come round or if I have to go to appointments and not put on difficult clothes which takes up all my energy

Shinyhappyapple · 29/09/2026 17:17

@Holidaymodeon

If you go on to the Next website and put in a search for ‘hoodie and jogger sets’, then page down you will see that there are quite a few with the top with the full front zip . I guess these are essentially tracksuits, but I assume you just mean non-sports logo ones.

I’m afraid I can’t link as every time I try to open the website it goes straight to the App and I can’t link from there .

Shinyhappyapple · 29/09/2026 17:23

@Holidaymodeon

To add - a lot of them are by M&Co, various colours, different leg styles. Not all have front zips so just look and see.

Thank you that’s really kind. Yes it’s the logo I don’t want. I love a good logo, especially retro and limited edition sportswear etc but I don’t always want to be in that mode, just casual , cosy , smart and a bit contemporary , not too old raver (my default setting 🤣)

shopaholicanon · 30/09/2026 19:22

@IcyPinkWaspI really love my Double Soft sweatshirts and trousers from Varley. They are soooo soft and look quite smart when worn as a matching set. I would say they are worth it but I haven’t really tried any from elsewhere so not sure how they would compare.
I’ve also got a few baseball caps and some socks from Varley so I’m a big fan!
