Yes or no to lounge sets?

This would be for mainly wearing in the house, but might pop to the shops in it. It's not the sort of thing I usually go for but thought it would look better than pyjamas when someone pops round unexpectedly, or when I want to be comfy at home but still look stylish enough to have a guest round.

Are they stylish or are they tacky? I'm 53 if that's relevant? https://www.marksandspencer.com/modal-blend-sandwash-cropped-sweatshirt/p/clp61227265

I like them but this description is accurate

This. Spending money on cheap and nasty man made fabrics to sit on the sofa: what's wrong with a t-shirt and jeans?

Also the whole concept of "loungewear" is naff as hell.

Making shitty comments like this is also “naff” 🙄

BadBadCat · 27/09/2026 20:33

Well, I have ordered! I've gone for the chocolate brown bottoms in 12L and the lighter coloured top and the Mocha as a set in 12 as they don't have longer length in that one. I'll let you all know how they fit and maybe even post a pic if feeling brave...

As for the hate of 'synthetic' fabrics on MN, it's a bit of a mystery to me - many of my comfiest clothes are man-made fibres- without them we wouldn't have nylon tights tights, lycra swimsuits and bikinis, technical leggings, fleece, waterproof coats, seam free underwear, faux fur etc. Viscose and modal are breathable and comfortable to wear and more durable than cotton. Cotton and wool are great but they aren't infinitely better for many things- wool is itchy as hell and cotton can be stiff and fades easily.

Also, struggling to see how the matching set looks less chic than the mismatched set- these are both from Reiss. Also, Jeans and a t-shirt is nowhere near as cosy and comfy to wear as a fleece lined jogging set with elasticated waist. Jeans have a non-stretch waist band and the cotton feels cool against the skin compared to jersey fabric. Have also ordered a velour lounge set from pour moi. It's more like PJ's although wouldn't wear out of the house but won't sleep in it either as prefer cotton or modal for sleeping.

The Reiss sets are lovely and soft. I also think matching sets look smarter than mismatched. When I wear lounge wear out I would always wear a matching set, a long coat and a cap and think it looks nice, sporty and smart. I wear a necklace and earrings too to elevate it a bit.

LittlePaintBox · 27/09/2026 23:05

I was in hospital for 18 weeks after an operation, so I was just wearing pyjama-like clothes for all that time. Some sets of 'jamas, otherwise jogging bottoms with long-ish tops. I'm still not going out much, so am mainly lounging around, and then I think it's really about what you feel comfy in, and don't feel too slobby if you go out in it.

Mirsine · 28/09/2026 01:39

I want to be comfy at home but still look stylish enough to have a guest round.

I wouldn’t invite any ‘guest’ to my home who I wouldn’t want to see me in my PJ’s and unbrushed hair.

If you’re uncomfortable seeing me look like a scruff and ‘not stylish’ in my own home - you’re no guest of mine.

But, I am team lounge set. I own loads.

There’s nothing wrong with ‘scruffy’. It’s what home is for.

The last time I was in hospital for more than one night was about thirty years ago - when I went in with ironed pyjamas and a new dressing gown. But if I were being admitted now I would absolutely want inexpensive, easy care loungewear from somewhere like Primark. (From experience it’s often easier to find high cotton content in the men’s department.)

As all my remaining post-lockdown loungewear is incredibly shabby (which I’m perfectly happy with for home) and I definitely wouldn’t want to take ‘nice’ nightwear to an NHS ward, I may make a special Primark trip to get something on a ‘just in case’ basis.

Well, I wouldn't want to host friends or family in my PJs and unbrushed hair, it's not mandatory to look scruffy just because you're at home?

The only people who I want to see me first thing in the morning in my PJs are my immediate family x

Ok, they arrived this morning! Here I am wearing both sets I ordered- sorry they look unnatural- I used AI to remove my background as didn’t want anyone to recognise my house.

The matching set feels better quality and thicker peachier material, the mismatched set is thinner- which looks best?

I asked DH- he said he wouldnt go out with me wearing either of them😂

I still say separates look better. It doesn't really matter about the fabric as you could easily get a nicer fabric version of either. But to my eye the brown set looks both oddly 70s and like you're prepping for a Hello! photoshoot.

Luckily my friends or family don’t give a shit if I’m in my PJs or have unbrushed hair. Life’s too short.

Newmeagain · 28/09/2026 13:16

Yes, the matching sets just look really wrong for some reason. And if you wear them with jewellery etc then it actually makes it worse as it looks “more deliberate” - rather than “this is just something I am wearing to pop out to the corner shop”.

I am all for comfort at home and usually wear some type of joggers - with a tshirt when it’s warmer or a jumper in winter. My 20 year old dd would never wear one of these matching sets either - much too uncool!

N0tjustAmum · 28/09/2026 13:18

Yes to lounge sets. Comfy and practical. But that M&S one is giving prison vibes 😬

If you want to wear pjs and not brush your hair that’s fine- I don’t care! I doubt my friends care if I’ve brushed my hair either but I want to look nice which is the point of my thread!

It’s just like interiors. If all your furniture matches, you end up with this really bland look. Like this:

You do you but I wouldn't even want my own mother to come round to me in pajamas and unbrushed hair. Unless she was coming round because I was having a dire medical emergency anyway.

If I've no energy to comb my hair, I've no energy for guests full stop.

1000% yes love… as long as hair and make up has been done can look great

I agree that if the rest of you looks 'done' you can get away with being super casual. But with lounge sets its important the colour suits you. Then its easy to pop a gilet/scarf/jacket etc over the top to nip to Tesco Express.

OvernightBloats · 28/09/2026 14:52

You could even get away with wearing the black trousers to work but that cream top does you no favours at all. The dropped shoulders are horrible.

The other one fits you much better.

I would love for every mean girl Miss Perfection on this thread to post a picture of what they're wearing now as they keyboard bitch from the comfort of their non cream sofas 😂 - though maybe that would spoil the mental images that spring to mind

It is necessary to be so unpleasant??

Every time I start to think women look out for each other, I read a comment like this that snaps me into reality.

BadBadCat · 28/09/2026 16:04

What exactly do you mean by 'do some exercise' ?
