Is this outfit too much for the office?

Is this too much to wear to the office? I wore it with a belt so wondering if I was over dressed?

Slips don't make you hot, if anything a slip is cooling under a summer dress.

Physics says "how does that work?" Extra layer = insulation = warmer, surely?

What did you wear on your feet op?
I think you look fabulous in the dress. Stylish without looking too over done. Really suits you.

Just some plain sandals ☺️

Slip stops dress sticking to you. M and S slips are brilliant.

Yes it’s weird imo

montysmaw · 28/08/2026 00:06

It looks like a lab coat.

Boobyslims · 28/08/2026 06:49

It’s no more lab coat than the clear plastic rim glasses that are around the last bunch of years. This dress would be normal attire in our office.

sassyduck · 28/08/2026 07:21

You look nice. I just envy your ability to keep it clean.

BlackSwan · 28/08/2026 07:51

The belt is too dark.

MaggieBsBoat · 28/08/2026 08:02

It looks like either a lab coat or something worn by a factory worker on a production line. So definitely not over dressed!!

Dogstar78 · 28/08/2026 08:17

I love the dress. I would wear it with a brown belt and flats and my hair in a pony. I dress up more than colleagues but that is how I feel comfortable. Noone judges each other in our office. Some people look like they fell out of a jumble sale, one colleague wears a three piece suit and brogues without fail and one woman always wears a bowler hat. It doesn't impact on our work.

Are there really so many posters who could not wear white (including shirts / blouses / trousers?) for fear of spillages?? That's bizzare to me!

Op you look good & not overdressed imo

I wear white blouses/t-shirts, though not often, as I mostly prefer more colour.

I've promised myself a pair of white jeans once I'm definitely through menopause, but I bet they'll end up with dust, grass stains and food stains in a day. I am pretty good at stains removal, though.

I was labcoated and sorting instruments out a couple of months ago.

both look like the OP's garment.

Initially, I genuinely did think that OP had found a lovely long lab coat that would keep reagents and samples off her legs.

You genuinely thought she worked in a lab, and was concerned her lab coat was overdressed for working in said lab, despite the thread title and her op clearly referring to an office environment?

"Genuinely"?

There are some ridiculous posts here. The dress very clearly looks like a dress. It's fine not to like an item of clothing or think it is not suitable but the "ooh it looks like...." posts are tedious.

I have just showed the picture in the OP to a neutral party (female).

They thought it was a lab coat.

The one you posted is 87% polymide which is nylon! I personally wouldn't like a nylon slip under a cotton dress! Each to their own. 🥵

Up to you. If you read the reviews you'll see most find it works well.

Cotton slips don't work as they stick to the material of the dress. The M&S slips are a slinky material which doesn't cling to either the wearer's skin or the material of the dress.

EBearhug · 28/08/2026 18:40

You can always get silk slips if you don't want nylon. Not as cheap, though.

handsdownthebest · 28/08/2026 19:44

Looks lovely and I'm sure you looked smart. It's still summer for another week so make the most of wearing it. I use to wear similar in black and khaki, which was more suitable to autumn.
I also used to wear a lab coat and it doesn't look anything like it.
Ignore the negative ninnies.
Good for getting back to work. Won't be long and you will be feeling more like the professional woman, which I am sure you are x

I can’t figure out if people are being serious or self-deprecating. There seems to be a large number who can’t get food in their mouths without dropping it down their front.

Holidaymodeon · 28/08/2026 19:52

In the styling photo it looks as though there’s a few of you in shot, was it for a special occasion at the office? If so that would make it far less a notable choice than a white dress on a regular work day

I wore it at a family gathering and then to the office as I hate originally bought it for work.

Silk doesn't actually work as well. And obviously doesn't wash or last as well.

I know posters on here faint at the mere suggestion of not wearing natural fibres all the time but synthetics have their place.

Having seen the original Zara ad I think the dress is fine for work.

I wish I was a doctor but feel like a ghost at the moment….

Both valid in my opinion OP.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/08/2026 13:43

Works fine in my office. I have one very similar and frequently get compliments on it. Looks great with a belt and heels. I wear a lot of cream, white, pale colours. I get the black back out when it get colder, lol
