Is this too much to wear to the office? I wore it with a belt so wondering if I was over dressed?

You look lovely OP. Mumsnetters seem to have forgotten the rule - if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

There is no such rule here. And that is not how discussion works.

But the OP’s outfit sounds completely unremarkable.

I once wore a white jacket (with gold buttons) to work and a colleague jokingly asked if I would be doing fillings later. I found it funny and we both laughed. So yes, too much white seems to be a no no for work.

Blimey if anything i wore i classed as a blanket "no no" after one clown of a colleagues mediocre attempt at being amusing id probably never wear the same outfit twice.

Definitely needed the belt. Normal shirt dress. Would be too informal for some offices. Not a "meet the client " dress . More for a girls lunch in town.

It depends on the office. Ours is mostly shorts/jeans and t-shirts.

Edited

It’s a thread about a dress not world politics. I think some posters just like to have a pop.

Nah, didn't bother me at all. It was actually a very funny and caring office, though someone once told me I was brave to wear a white skirt and use public transport!

Are you a doctor? Or a ghost?

I wish I was a doctor but feel like a ghost at the moment….

It looks like a nightie or a beach dress, is it see through?. Not sure that 'too much' or 'overdressed' is an issue.

It’s quite thick so not see through at all x

I like it and its not overdressed at all. I love wearing white but am quite clumsy so have to stick to print or dark colours really.

I've never seen a lab coat look like that or be worn outside of an actual lab. And I used to work next to a lab.

I was labcoated and sorting instruments out a couple of months ago.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160977664316

both look like the OP's garment.

Initially, I genuinely did think that OP had found a lovely long lab coat that would keep reagents and samples off her legs.

TappyGilmore · 27/08/2026 21:44

I don’t think “overdressed” is the right word but it’s not something I would wear to work. Pure white is impractical in case you spill something or sit in something. The same style in a different colour would be okay.

I did think it looked like a lab coat to start with, but seeing how you’ve styled it, it looks much better.

TheChosenTwo · 27/08/2026 21:45

I like the dress and it would fit in just fine in my office where the vibe is just respectful (so no boobs or arses hanging out or anything that could be viewed as indecent I guess? It’s a very vague dress code!), jeans are fine, leggings and trainers are fine, blazers are fine, basically come in and be comfortable. If we are in meetings with anyone external we are aware of this beforehand and mostly people make more of an effort to not be in leggings or anything that’s on the sloppier end but it’s not expected.

dancehysterical22 · 27/08/2026 21:48

Fine

Mycatmax · 27/08/2026 21:48

Not remotely overdressed, no. Slightly too casual for my workplace possibly (legal)

There's another rule, one that you've forgotten: friends don't let friends wear outfits that don't suit the occasion.

OP asked for feedback, not a yes-woman echo chamber.

cinquanta · 27/08/2026 21:49

I’m in the looks like lab coat camp.

Fine for my workplace.

Whattinger · 27/08/2026 21:55

Are there really so many posters who could not wear white (including shirts / blouses / trousers?) for fear of spillages?? That's bizzare to me!

Op you look good & not overdressed imo

I wear white but usually have to stain treat the clothes before they go in the wash, or at least remove the white clothes before I eat my evening meal 😂
im very messy plus salad dressings just flick off randomly!

This is how I styled it

With the belt over and the sleeves rolled back, it loses the lab coat look. It's also clearly an ecru crepe in your photo, not the white poly-cotton twill that I initially mistook it for.

I don't think it's overdressed for most offices. However, it's a brave choice from the point of view of spills. I'd have ruined it just eating breakfast.

A PP suggested big plastic bead necklaces in bright colours. I'm thinking belts like https://curiosityafricanboutique.com/products/sibongile-colourful-beaded-leather-belt and a colourful statement bracelet on your not-watch hand, with metallic or colourful shoes. A necklace doesn't work so well with that neckline, but your bare wrist (thanks to the tie-the-sleeves-up straps, which explain the buttons I was confused by) screams for something on it.

I didn’t suggest that she did. But I doubt her friends would offer some of the ‘feedback’ given here to her face, they’re needlessly snide.

My maths teacher would have worn that in 1986 with a contrast belt and matching chunky plastic jewellery. She always looked fabulous.
I think it's fine for the office, and a nice dress.
And hello Mrs. Roberts if you're reading this.

I'm not Mrs Roberts, but what a nice post, after the tee-hee it looks like a lab coat posts.

PhaedraTwo · 27/08/2026 22:56

7238SM · 27/08/2026 09:03

Of course, but I wouldn't want to be wearing a slip if it was hot and the OP hasn't clarified if she was wearing one?

Slips don't make you hot, if anything a slip is cooling under a summer dress.

PhaedraTwo · 27/08/2026 22:59

It looks great. It'd be fine in my office

PancakePatty · 27/08/2026 23:00

What did you wear on your feet op?
I think you look fabulous in the dress. Stylish without looking too over done. Really suits you.
