Is this outfit too much for the office?

Is this too much to wear to the office? I wore it with a belt so wondering if I was over dressed?

Not for the office, I’d keep that for a night out.

If it was a different colour the office would be fine but not white.

dudsville · 27/08/2026 09:06

I think this is a fine plain dress, but I would think it was too much for the office if a man showed up in all white, so I'm pondering my vote.

totallyoutnumbered · 27/08/2026 09:17

It doesn’t look like a bloody lab coat. Like @Switchnowsaid, no imagination.

and @BaronessBomburst my friend wears hers just like your maths teacher, she’s so stylish in her own unique way. She rarely buys new, just has a flair for throwing something on and looks amazing and more importantly she feels amazing.

OP it’s a lovely dress, if it’s in any way see through, a slip is essential. I’m accident prone and would definitely go home with something spilled on it but I’d love to wear it none the less.

She’s not everyone’s cup of tea but take a look at Trinny Woodall if you have instagram as she’s always styling long dresses like this over trousers and accessories. You don’t have to spend, use your own wardrobe x

MyManinCaracas · 27/08/2026 09:19

I would wear that on a hot summer day. Probably wouldn’t spill anything on myself.

Bzr · 27/08/2026 09:23

It’s absolutely fine with a tan belt. I’d wear it with tan suede high fronted flat shoes. There have been a few people on white dresses in my office over the summer. I wouldn’t wear a slip- do they even exist anymore, but nude underwear should cover off any issues with it being see through, if it is

AnonyMumAuDHD · 27/08/2026 09:33

Style is fine and not over the top at all - but in white? Never. White blouses/tops are fine but a completely white outfit is destined to have coffee or ink on it at some point in the day.

Undertheeaves · 27/08/2026 09:36

I opened the thread thinking it was going to be something outrageous and it's a completely normal shirt dress?! White maybe isn't a practical choice in some places but it wouldn't raise a glance in my office.

AnitaCam · 27/08/2026 09:52

It’s very ordinary. And it’s white, which makes it impractical for work.

LoyalGoldMentor · 27/08/2026 09:57

Lovely dress. It depends what the office dress is. Like others, I wouldn't make it into the office without it getting stained!

Very odd outfit overall. Looks like a surgeon from the 1950s. The OP who said it looks like a lab coat hit the nail on the head!

!

It so totally does! 😆

Switchnow · 27/08/2026 11:11

A surprising lack of style considering we’re in S&B. Have people really never considered a white dress for an office? Ink spills are fairly rare (unless part of your job is to manage the printer) and it’s just as easy to spill coffee on a dress of any other colour. Unless everyone is only wearing black/navy/dark grey? I work in a tenanted building so lots of different employers and women wear all sorts of things. This is far from outlandish and the insistence it looks like a lab coat (with gold buttons??) just smacks of bitchiness.

How you’ve styled it is very 80s, you’re just missing jelly shoes, bag and a hot pink plastic beads, earrings and bracelet set!

Megifer · 27/08/2026 08:26

I like it and its not overdressed at all. I love wearing white but am quite clumsy so have to stick to print or dark colours really.

I've never seen a lab coat look like that or be worn outside of an actual lab. And I used to work next to a lab.

Me too. White is not for me. I’m always impressed by people who can wear white and stay clean for the day. The pressure 🥹

Ironfloor269 · 27/08/2026 11:31

Not if you work in laboratory or forensics.

ToddlersAreBananas · 27/08/2026 11:31

You look great in it, and it's very suitable

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 27/08/2026 00:33

Where did you get such a smashing lab coat from? I especially like the buttons on the pockets to stop items from falling in and out.

I’d totally wear that to work over my jeans and shirt.

It’s from Zara ☺️

Lol. “You’re just missing all the 80s accessories that would make it look like something from the 80s!”

TFImBackIn · 27/08/2026 12:12

It looks great, OP, though I'd be worried about spilling something on it - there's no way you could hide that! Why are you concerned?

BandyAid · 27/08/2026 12:17

Ask the bride if she'd be ok with it.

I knew it was from Zara! I have a grey and black snake print similar version of that shirt dress that has pockets and its one of my fave dresses.

It looks great, really suits you 😊

I think that looks good. Well done OP 👏 Ignore the naysayers.

Sorry it reminds me of a lab coat like a scientist would wear.

My first thought also!

So "just" missing all the things that would indeed make it look 80's styled?

Is that not a bit like saying "if your pants were made of denim, and looked like jeans, they'd be jeans"?
